After restructuring, Rolls Royce will be divided into three business units, Civil Aerospace, Defense and Power Systems. [1] Rolls Royce continues to enjoy success in the commercial engine business with the Trent family of engines being used on next-generation aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350. [1] Rolls Royce announced 4,600 job cuts over the next two years as part of a massive reorganization and confidence in the manufacturer has dropped due to increase prolonged pressure from airline customers due to issues with the Trent 1000 engines. [1] In the early 20th century, two men came together to start a company that would become world-renown in both car manufacturing and airplane engine manufacturing, Rolls Royce. [1] From a small-time car operation that eventually started building engines in the First World War to today, Rolls Royce is without a doubt Britain?s most well-regarded engineering firm. [1] Rolls Royce engines power the world?s longest flights and some of the cheapest flights too due to their low cost of operation. [1] Rolls Royce was given a loan by the United States Congress that allowed the company to emerge from bankruptcy and turn the RB-211 into a successful engine in 1972. [1] As the war raged on, Rolls Royce ended up supplying engines for 60 percent of British military aircraft. [1] This engine and newer models can be found to this day on many A330 aircraft and is regarded by Rolls Royce as having the lowest fuel burn of any engine available for the A330. [1] Rolls Royce has had a remarkable impact on aviation throughout its entire lifetime and these engine issues are nothing more than a rough patch that will be overcome in due time. [1] The team at Rolls Royce continued their endeavor and created a new engine called the Merlin 46. [1] This principle was then applied to a new engine Rolls Royce was building, the RB-211. [1]

Rolls-Royce grew from the engineering business of F H Royce which was established in 1884 and ten years later began to manufacture dynamos and electric cranes. [2] Rolls-Royce's aerospace business makes commercial and military gas turbine engines for military, civil, and corporate aircraft customers worldwide. [2] The civil aerospace business is a major manufacturer and service provider of aero engines. [9] On 14 June 2018 the company announced a restructuring of the business to create three simpler decentralised units ( civil aerospace, defence and power systems ), to rationalise back office functions and to remove middle management functions. [2]

The second Rolls engine affected by the early corrosion problem is the Trent 900, which powers some models of the Airbus A380 super-jumbo jet. [10] Rolls has also redesigned an extended-life turbine blade for this engine and further redesigns will be available in 2020. [10] Rolls on Wednesday reported an accounting charge of $315 million to cover ongoing repairs to two models of its jet engines, mostly the Trent 1000 in the Boeing 787 fleet, as well as compensation to airlines for planes taken out of service for the engine retrofits. [10] "These issues have required urgent short-term support including both on-wing and shop visit intervention which has resulted in increased disruption for some of our customers," Rolls said in a news release. [10]

[13] Rolls-Royce is reaching a new milestone in the development of its next generation of civil aerospace engines with the first run of its Advance3 demonstrator. [14]

LONDON (Reuters) - Rolls-Royce ( RR.L ) is considering the sale of its loss-making commercial marine business in another shake-up by Chief Executive Warren East that will streamline its activities into civil aerospace, defense and power system units. [15] In January, Rolls-Royce announced a reduction in operating businesses from five to three - civil aerospace, defence and power systems - and the company had already begun cutting staff while also indicating more drastic measures were to follow. [16] Rolls-Royce announces that Chris Cholerton, currently President - Defence, has been appointed as President - Civil Aerospace, and Tom Bell, previously Global Sales & Marketing for Defense, Space & Security at The Boeing Company, is returning to lead our enlarged Defence business. [12] Chris Cholerton, the Rolls-Royce president of civil aerospace, said: "We are working closely with our customers to minimise any operational impact of these inspections and we deeply appreciate their continued co-operation. [17] Eric Schulz, Rolls-Royce, President - Civil Aerospace, said: "We are about to take another step towards making our future technology strategy a reality. [14]

Rolls-Royce's track record of data gathering and analyzing includes Engine Health Monitoring system that has helped improve management of engine fleet around the world, while significantly reducing disruption for its aerospace customers. [18] The engine features a high-power gearbox, designed to deliver efficiency at high bypass ratios, which earlier this year achieved 70,000hp while on test in Dahlewitz, Germany, a new record in the aerospace industry. [14] The job losses are unlikely to affect frontline engineering jobs after the company and unions agreed a deal last year to protect about 7,000 roles at plants in Derby - and Hucknall and Annesley in Nottinghamshire - as part of a 150m investment in UK aerospace facilities. [16] The parties announced last year a plan to invest up to S$60 million (US$45.5 million) to set up a lab to develop next-generation aerospace manufacturing, as well as MRO capabilities enabled by advanced processes, automation and digital technologies. [11]

According to Richard Goodhead, senior v-p marketing for Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace, the Intelligent Engine is "the confluence of three concepts--product, services and digital--coming together." [11] "This is a crucial time for Civil Aerospace as we deliver the most significant increase in engine production in recent memory while managing a number of in-service issues and bringing several new engines into service. [12]

Ground zero of the restructuring is Rolls-Royce's Derby headquarters, where a heavily centralized management structure is to be unpicked to give more autonomy to the company's three business units: civil aerospace, defence and power systems. [19] We operate across five businesses: Civil Aerospace, Defence Aerospace, Marine, Nuclear and Power Systems. [14] Our power systems are used in aerospace, marine, energy and off-highway applications. [14]

[12] Advance3 receives funding and support from Clean Sky 2, the Aerospace Technology Institute and Innovate UK. [14]

He said that when Total Care started for Trent engines, "the circles started to overlap" and now Rolls is "taking far more data and doing far more with it." [11] Rolls is also speeding the development of the new blade and a dedicated facility in Derby to build engines on which it will test it. [13]

East had resisted selling the marine business, which has been hit by weak offshore oil and gas markets, saying its technology was relevant to other parts of Rolls. [15] East, who has already stripped out layers of management at Rolls, said the restructuring would remove some duplication, but it was too early to quantify job losses. [15]

Chief Executive Warren East said: "I am pleased to announce the leadership of our Civil Aerospace and Defence businesses. [12] Chris Cholerton has held engineering, programme and operational leadership positions in both our Civil Aerospace and Defence businesses. [12]

Rolls-Royce President - Civil Aerospace Chris Cholerton said: "Certifying and delivering the Trent 7000 engine further strengthens our position on the latest generation of aircraft and I would like to thank everyone at EASA and Airbus, as well as my own Rolls-Royce colleagues, who have worked so closely to get to this point." [20] "The expansion of the partnership with Godrej to manufacture aero engine components showcases our commitment to developing an aerospace ecosystem in this country," said Kishore Jayaraman, president of Rolls-Royce India and South Asia. [21] The world's second-largest economy will likely start manufacturing engines for jumbo jets soon, according to Rolls-Royce, a long-time engine manufacturer for commercial and defense aerospace. [4]

Under the new contract, Godrej Aerospace will manufacture "unison rings, complex fabrication and external brackets which will supply as many as 600 different parts to the various Rolls-Royce civil aerospace engine portfolio," said Jamshyd Godrej, chairman and managing director of Godrej & Boyce. [21] MUMBAI -- Godrej Aerospace, a unit of Indian manufacturing group Godrej & Boyce, has secured a $30 million contract from Britain's Rolls-Royce to make parts for aircraft engines at its new facility in Mumbai over the next five years. [21]

Rolls-Royce Aerospace, a separate company that has become a leader in jet engines, has operations at the pair?s old car factory in Derby, northern England. [5] British aerospace company Rolls-Royce is developing a personal electric flying vehicle that it says could be on the market by the early 2020s. [22] With all the hype around electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft design, Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace team decided it might be time to feel the airways with a hybrid system. [23] Rolls-Royce said its first-half results were ahead of expectations, due to strong growth at its civil aerospace and power systems divisions. [24]

Rolls-Royce has been active in the Indian defense aerospace sector since 1933 and has manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru in the south of the country and Pune in the west. [21] According to Godrej Aerospace Executive Vice President S.M Vaidya, the contract will save Rolls-Royce about 20%-30% of its costs, compared to what it would have incurred in another country. [21] "We are very proud of the talent and domain expertise our people bring to our customers - innovation is a key differentiator for Belcan and is highly valued in the aerospace community," said Joe Triompo, president of Belcan's engineering services segment. [20] Cincinnati, Ohio-based Belcan, a global supplier of engineering, supply chain, technical recruiting, and information technology (IT) services supporting aerospace, defense, automotive, industrial, and government services markets, has been selected as a recipient of the 2017 Pratt & Whitney Supplier Productivity Innovation Award. [20]

East has already eliminated around 600 senior managers, as well as thousands of workers at Rolls?s main aerospace business and in its marine arm, which may be sold. [6] Jamshyd Godrej believes that although the aerospace business is currently a small part of Godrej & Boyce's portfolio, it has the potential to become a more important one in future. [21]

In a worst-case scenario, planes would lose their certification and "it's not alarmist to say that aircraft will not fly," Paul Everitt, CEO of the aerospace and defense industry's ADS Group said Thursday at an event in London. [3] The aerospace giant said on Thursday that it's moving the design approval for large jet engines to Germany to ensure it can continue operating whatever the Brexit outcome. [3]

The CEO announced last month that Rolls would trim expenses to absorb the cost of extra shop visits and the redesign of components required to address the glitch, which affects around 380 of 500 engines that Rolls has built for the Dreamliner and led regulators to place operating limits on the jet. [25] He became interested in cars and had built three of his own by 1904, when he was introduced to Charles Rolls, an upper-class young man who gained an interest in engineering. [5] Rolls, who was also a pioneer in aviation, died in a plane crash at age 36. [5]

Henry Royce, a self-taught engineer, was born in 1863 near Peterborough in England, working for a railway company and tool-making firm before setting up a business making dynamos and electric cranes. [5] Godrej Aerospace entered the aircraft industry in 2005 with simple machine components and, over a period of time, has partnered with several global equipment manufacturers, supplying them components such as sheet metal and tubing assemblies, actuators and other complex structures. [21] Godrej Aerospace first bagged a contract from Rolls-Royse in 2014 for manufacturing unison rings. [21]

Engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce has started work on its new testbed facility in Derby, UK. The building was announced in June 2017 as part of a wider £150 million ($211 million) investment in UK aerospace facilities. [26] It has shares on all our key engine programs, particularly the newer engine programs and it has where it has, for example, shares of around 10% or so on the XWB. The underlying revenue growth is driven by the growth in Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace program. [27] Expected to be commissioned in 2020, it will provide additional capacity as the civil aerospace business continues to ramp-up engine production. [26]

Tilt-wing electric-propulsion VTOL aircraft are popping up all over the place at the moment, so there's nothing particularly new or radical about this design, except the long-range hybrid powertrain and the fact that, rather than a Silicon Valley startup, it's being pushed by an established aerospace company that does US$21.5 billion dollars worth of business a year instead of. [28] We sell our engines in aerospace pretty much at a loss, that?s the way the market is. [29] Kongsberg, which has operations in 25 countries and 7,000 staff, provides products to sectors including defence, oil and gas and aerospace. [30] "The sale of our commercial marine business will enable us to focus on our three core businesses of civil aerospace, defence and power systems, and on meeting the vital power needs of our customers." [30] OE revenue, 19% organic growth, largely driven by the Civil Aerospace ramp up, which we'll talk about in detail and the growth in Power Systems. [27] Civil Aerospace growing at 26%, that was growing in OE, long-term service agreement revenue, but also in time and material revenue as well. [27] LTSA service revenue, again, the flying hour growth is a big driver of that, but also the shop visits growth as well and LTSA service revenues, and again, largely Civil Aerospace. [27] What else do I have to say on this slide? I think, well, there is increased investment in Civil Aerospace largely, the advanced-development programs, the UltraFan progress continues as Warren talked about. [27] You got underlying volume growth in Civil Aerospace as well. [27]

Elizabeth Opila is a Professor with joint appointments in Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. [31] All in all, a good half for civil aerospace, and I'll talk about Trent 1000 in a moment. [27]

Rolls is implementing a sweeping restructuring plan which aims to generate 400 million of annual cost savings by the end of 2020. [30]

The world?s second-largest economy will likely start manufacturing engines for jumbo jets soon, according to Rolls-Royce, a long-time engine manufacturer for commercial and defence aerospace. [7] While the 400,000 square feet Rolls-Royce is looking to sublease was configured for engine maintenance, including a set of cranes that can move heavy equipment from one end of the building to the other, Harris said it could fit a number of other aerospace manufacturing uses. [32] Kishore Jayaraman, president, Rolls-Royce India and South Asia said, "The expansion of partnership with Godrej to manufacture aero engine components showcases our commitment to developing an aerospace ecosystem in this country." [33] Denver Business Journal -- Fort Collins aerospace company Woodward Inc.' s purchase of Rolls-Royce fuel injection systems technology company L'Orange is complete. [34]

Rolls-Royce civil aerospace engine portfolio," the statement said. [33] Expanding its partnership, Rolls-Royce has awarded a Rs 200-crore (USD 30 million) contract to Godrej Aerospace, spread over the next five years, the company said. [33] Mumbai: Godrej Aerospace, a unit of Godrej & Boyce, has expanded its partnership with aerospace major Rolls-Royce by bagging a Rs 200-crore contract which will involve the group investing Rs 50 crore in a new facility. [33]

In the medium-term, the company is looking at adopting ALM for the manufacturing of increasing number of engine components as the speed of the process and the number of materials certified for aerospace use increase. [35] "As far as aerospace manufacturing spaces go, it?s ideal for the industry," he said. [32] The newly inaugurated centre of excellence will be one of the best aerospace facilities in the country for manufacturing of sheet metal brackets. [33]

Roughly two months after the first test flight, VSS Unity took to the skies at the Mojave Air and Space Port, a civilian aerospace test center, in Mojave, California. [36] Commenting on the partnership, Jamshyd Godrej, chairman and managing director of Godrej & Boyce said, "Godrej Aerospace has served the domestic aerospace programme for close to three decades. [33] Given the size of these players in the aerospace industry I believe that they are able to take all the steps further to secure an efficient implementation of such technology, even solidifying their relationships with suppliers of raw materials like powder metals. [35]

Godrej Aerospace started contributing to the global aircraft industry in 2005 with simple machine components and over a period of time, has partnered with several global OEMs supplying them complex components like sheet metal and tubing assemblies, actuators, and other complex structures. [33]
