According to the California Space Authority, about 50% of the entire aerospace industry is supported in some way by California aerospace manufacturers, such as SpaceX and Boeing. 
Last year, over 800 students and teachers visited from 32 schools spread across Connecticut and southwestern Massachusetts to learn about the array of career choices available in the aerospace manufacturing industry.  It isn?t just aerospace manufacturing and custom electronics and computer parts that are driving California?s exports explosion.  Treating wastewater and purifying process water for aerospace manufacturing, though similar to treatments utilized in conventional metal plating, is full of unique challenges because of the need for highly pure water.

Liberty Hall plans to use Bromford, based in Birmingham, United Kingdom, as the foundation piece of a diversified supplier of components for aerospace and power generation industries, building the business through both acquisitions and organic growth.  Cold forming also has numerous applications for electromechanical components used in aerospace. 
Before the Berkshire deal, Precision had made several acquisitions of its own, including Noranco Inc., an aerospace parts manufacturer, from MidOcean Partners and PSP Investments for $560 million and Composites Horizons LLC, a maker of composite materials used in airplane engines, from American Industrial Partners for undisclosed terms, both in July 2015.  Earlier in 2016, Liberty Hall acquired AIM Aerospace, a Renton, Washington, aircraft parts manufacturer, with BlackRock Private Equity Partners and Northwestern Mutual Capital are also investing in the $220 million deal. 
In 2013, Liberty Hall acquired Accurus Aerospace Corp., a parts supplier that since made three add-on acquisitions: LaCroix Industries in 2015, McCann Machining in 2014 and Precise Machining & Manufacturing in 2013.  “Additive manufacturing provides an option for applications with complex geometries, long lead times and lower volumes in aerospace-grade metals,” says Scott Killian, aerospace business development manager at EOS of North America Inc. “It can replace machining, forging, casting and composites, without the need for expensive tooling and slower manufacturing speeds.”  “Historically, aerospace has always strived to go higher, faster, further,” explains Tom Campbell, director of innovation for space and intelligence systems at Harris Corp. “Additive manufacturing unlocks the ability to make parts that could never be made in the past when we used traditional subtractive manufacturing techniques.  “There are a number of things driving interest, such as part consolidation,” says Robert Yancey, vice president of aerospace and composites at Altair Engineering Inc. “Companies can save the cost of fastening and welding processes, as well as integrate designs that can have improved performance.  Notable deals exemplifying that trend have include Warren Buffett‘s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK.A and BRK.B) earlier in 2016 completing its $37.2 billion deal for Precision Castparts Corp. (NYSE: PCP), supplier of equipment for the aerospace and energy industries.  WINDSOR Lee Welch, director of sales and marketing at Aero Gear Inc., a Windsor manufacturer of aerospace gearboxes, is getting a spot on the same global aerospace stage next week as titans General Electric Co. and United Technologies Corp.  Liberty Hall Capital Partners has acquired Bromford Industries, manufacturer of components for aircraft engines and industrial turbinesthe second acquisition in two months for the New York private equity firm.  It is ideal for producing parts with complex geometries, such as ducting and air-handling components, that cannot be made by traditional manufacturing methods. In this industry, precision and durability are mission-critical with every component.  The engineers were also able to consolidate the complex part from 163 individual components into two-piece units.  “The ideal candidates are smaller, more complex components, such as general prismatic parts and brackets,” he points out.  “Optimized component designs can tend to take on organic shapes, can be hollow or can consist of an outer shell with a 3D cellular mesh in the center regions of the part,” Beuth points out.  The aerospace industry relies on cold forming — and STS Intelli has the experience needed to supply custom cold formed components for aerospace applications. 
Two widely publicized aerospace applications involve jet engines that will be used in next-generation single-aisle jetliners.  But for aerospace applications, it will be a smaller market compared to metal.

When done correctly, cold forming is a preferred forging method in aerospace because the likelihood that precious alloy parts have defects or folds is greatly reduced.  According to Rene, many types of aerospace parts can be produced with additive manufacturing.  Some experts believe that additive manufacturing will reduce the average lead time for aerospace parts by up to 80 percent.  Additive manufacturing allows aerospace companies to build complex shapes and dramatically reduce production time. 
Precious alloys used in aerospace projects for the military and government often have very strict standards.  “A lot of things in aerospace traditionally have a high barrier to entry, due to the cost of machines or infrastructure.  That’s why companies from Airbus to Zodiac Aerospace are scrambling to find innovative ways to apply the technology.  Aerospace engineers are using several different additive manufacturing processes to turn their ideas into reality.  “When additive manufacturing first emerged, there was hesitation from some aerospace engineers who felt the technology wasn’t yet proven or reliable, or that it might be a passing fad,” notes Rene.  More than one-third (36 percent) of aerospace professionals responding to ASSEMBLY Magazine’s 2015 State of the Profession survey claim they are actively involved in additive manufacturing projects.

Every ounce counts Aircraft manufacturers rely on light-weight composite parts and assemblies in order to meet their customers every increasing requirements for extended range, payload and fuel efficiencies.  Every segment of the aerospace industry is investing in the technology, including manufacturers of commercial jetliners, military helicopters, rockets and satellites.  The industry sector with the highest adoption rate is the space industry, which includes manufacturers of missiles, rockets and satellites.  The technology also allows manufacturers to scrap less than 10 percent of expensive material, such as titanium, compared to traditional production methods that often waste up to 90 percent of material.
