Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh announced on May 10 that the school will launch a bachelor of science program in artificial intelligence this fall. [1] Carnegie Mellon isn’t alone: In January, the Milwaukee School of Engineering announced it will offer a computer science degree focused on artificial intelligence beginning in fall 2018. (Hat tip to Engadget for noticing.) [1] Carnegie Mellon University will become the first U.S. college to offer an undergraduate degree in artificial intelligence (AI) this fall, following careful consideration about where the fledgling field is going and how the institution can use this opportunity to promote social responsibility around AI. [2] It’s a college major that sounds straight out of science fiction : Starting this fall, at least two U.S. schools are offering degrees focused on artificial intelligence. [1]

CMU has a long history in artificial intelligence, including the creation of the first AI computer program in 1956 and pioneering work in self-driving cars, facial recognition and natural language processing. [3] “Students have come here interested in learning more about artificial intelligence, and there really wasn?t any structured way for them to do it,” Simmons told EdScoop. “They could take courses here and there, they could take certain concentrations, they could do an additional major in robotics or a minor in machine learning, but the full-fledged curriculum wasn?t there.” [2] “Specialists in artificial intelligence have never been more important, in shorter supply or in greater demand by employers,” said Andrew Moore, dean of the School of Computer Science. [3] U.S. News and World Report this spring ranked SCS as the No. 1 graduate school for artificial intelligence. [3] Skills in artificial intelligence are in high demand in virtually every industry; Simmons and his colleagues will face the unique task of preparing students for jobs that have never been filled and, in some cases, do not even exist yet. [2] “There?s been increased interest from industry and government, and it was felt that it was time to do this, and that there would be opportunities for students coming out of an artificial intelligence program to contribute to society.” [2] Carnegie Mellon is, by many, considered the birthplace of artificial intelligence. [2]

“Artificial intelligence and deep learning have reached a golden age thanks to recent hardware and software advancements,” Dr. Derek Riley, program director of the new computer science degree, said in a statement. [1]
