We asked them to cite one design event they?re most looking forward to in 2018, other than the ones they?re organizing or promoting. [1] NYCxDesign Friday 11 – Wednesday 23 May, New York, U.S. This festival showcases design of all disciplines in all five of New York City’s boroughs, with fairs including ICFF, WantedDesign, Brooklyn Designs, and a host of talks, installations and showroom events in designated districts. [2] In its sixth year and spearheaded by Edward Hogikyan, Chief Marketing Officer of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), NYCxDESIGN was inspired by previous Speaker of the New York City Council, Christine Quinn, who wanted to create an event that promoted and spotlighted the design sector in New York City. [3]

AIA Conference on Architecture New York City, U.S. June 21-23 “This is the first time in 30 years that the AIA National Conference has been in New York City, and the speaker line up for this event, still to be announced for 2018, is usually stellar. (Michelle Obama headlined 2017 speakers and Bill Clinton was the keynote for 2015). [1]

Parsons School of Design : The Parsons Festival is an annual series of art and design events taking place at the end of the academic year, in which cutting-edge student work is presented to the Parsons community and the public. [3] With over 400 different exhibitions, installations, trade shows, panels, product launches, open studios, and more, NYCxDESIGN runs from May 11-23 across the city?s five boroughs and is the biggest design event of the year. [3] Founded by Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat, WantedDesign is a series of international design events in two locations, one in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. [3]

Without further ado, we present you top 10 hottest interior design events of spring autumn 2018. [4] In preparation for New York City?s biggest design celebration, here?s a quick guide to this year?s inaugural events for NYCxDesign. [2] Knitting together hundreds of events throughout the city, including trade shows, exhibitions, product launches and talks, it showcases the latest in furniture and product design, fashion, architecture and more. [15] The main event is the Salone del Mobile furniture fair, but there are also design districts all over the city, from Brera to Tortona. [2] Nomad Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 February, St Moritz, Switzerland The inaugural Nomad fair showcased collectible design in Karl Lagerfeld’s luxurious former villa in Monaco, but this year the event is also taking place in Switzerland. [2] São Paulo Design Weekend Wednesday 29 August – Sunday 2 September, São Paulo, Brazil The only major event taking place in August, São Paulo Design Weekend is a celebration of Latin American design. [2] InnoTown Innovation Conference esund, Norway May 29-30 “While not strictly a “design?conference, this jam-packed one-day event was infused with an ethos of design. [1] Neighborhoods like Soho, Tribeca, and Nomad will each have nights where the neighborhood showrooms and galleries stay open late with cocktail parties and other fun events welcoming people in to celebrate their design. [3] Our exhibit and events include public space design, graphic design, digital design, costume design and so much more.” [3] Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair Tuesday 6 – Saturday 10 February, Stockholm, Sweden Over 700 exhibitors will showcase at this year’s event, including Swedish design classics and rising young designers. [2]

New Designers Part II Wednesday 4 – Saturday 7 July, London, UK Architecture, interiors, furniture and product design, plus graphics and illustration, feature in the second phase of the graduate exhibition. [2] Design March Thursday 15 – Sunday 18 March, Reykjavík, Iceland Icelandic designers open their Reykjavík studios and host workshops for the public over four days. [2]

Toronto Design Offsite Monday 15 – Sunday 21 January, Toronto, Canada Toronto Design Offsite returns for an eighth year, bringing a host of designers and artists to the Canadian city, and turning it into a “hub for creativity”. [2] The design center will host special activities, including designer appearances and new products. [15] Exhibitions include a show of design that aims to be good for people and the planet, the products of an international design school workshop led by the ArtCenter College of Design and a project to promote creative exchange between France and the United States. [15] The Substation Various, May-Oct Singapore “Singapore?s pioneering independent contemporary art centre recently ventured into architecture and design with “Discipline the City?, a program of exhibitions talks and workshops that looks at who has the right to the city. [1] In a new location at the Brooklyn Museum, this design show features work by more than 50 Brooklyn brands, including design firms such as Token, Fort Makers and Quiet Town; installations by Pratt Institute and the Textile Arts Center; and a series of talks, including a keynote by the architect Jonathan Marvel. [15] Pratt Institute : Pratt Shows is a series of curated year-end shows that offers the public an exciting opportunity to experience the work of Pratt Institute?s graduating class featuring work from the Schools of Design, Architecture, and Art. [3] Students from New York?s School of Visual Arts, Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute and Cooper Union present design projects based on the theme “Future Female” at the School of Visual Arts. [15] School of Visual Arts : SVA?s “Radical Times,” showcases graduate students pursuing an MFA in Product Design who will explore speculative pasts and futures to produce seventeen product proposals for the present day–each a 3-dimensional manifestation of their year-long thesis, and each attempting to reconcile their points of view with their imagined, preferred states. [3] A series of talks organized by The New York Times at the TimesCenter with leading figures in art and design, including David Adjaye, Isabel Toledo, Christo and David Rockwell. [15] New York City also has 10 of the most prominent design and architecture schools in the country and graduates twice as many design and architecture students than any other city in the United States. WantedDesign aims to provide a platform dedicated to promoting design and fostering the international creative community at large throughout the year. [3] With hundreds of design fairs, conferences and trade shows taking place around the world every year, it can be hard to choose which to attend. [2] The conference is a magnet for designers and big thinkers from around the world – and has evolved well beyond interior design and architecture. [1] Awards are giving for outstanding products and projects in all the major design categories, from architecture to interiors, from products to accessories, from craft to technology.” [3] Fashion Institute of Technology : FIT is hosting the Graduating Student Exhibition which will feature juried, award-winning, and thesis projects from 17 majors including Accessories and Communication Design, Computer Animation and Interactive Media, Fashion, Graphic, Interior, Jewelry, Packaging and Toy Design. An exhibition of new work from 17 American designers, including Allied Maker, Moving Mountains, Flat Vernacular, Fort Standard and Grain at the design co-op Colony, along with a design debate on the evening of May 22. [15] Design Miami/ Tuesday 4 – Friday 9 December, Miami, U.S. Design Miami brings together gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world to celebrate and promote collectible design. It?s only the second major museum to hold an exhibition focused on women in architecture, and it is the only design museum to ever do so. [1] If you love architecture and urban design from historic to contemporary, you’ll have already been looking forward to this year’s Open House. [3]

NYCxDesign, the annual celebration of design, returns for its sixth edition from Friday through May 23. [15] On May 21st, the ICFF Opening Party follows the NYCxDESIGN design award ceremony. [3]

Design Indaba Festival Cape Town, South Africa Feb 21-24 “Ravi Naidoo and the Design Indaba team have built a powerhouse conference in Cape Town. [1] FAD Market is a seasonal roving fashion, art and design marketplace that travels to different venues in Brooklyn. [3] International pavilions, a showcase of 33 emerging designers, and interior design and work-space presentations take over the Terminal Stores complex in Chelsea. [15] A multifaceted show and design lab at Industry City in Sunset Park. [15] Check out the Times Square 2000 foot-long, 25 foot-high inflatable “Design Pavilion” installation designed by Harry Allen with INFLATE?s Nick Crosbie. [3]

Helsinki Design Week Thursday 6 – Sunday 16 September, Helsinki, Finland The range of events organised for the Finnish festival includes exhibitions, fashion shows, talks and workshops, along with a growing number of satellite events. [2] The conference will be held in parallel with Singapore?s annual Design Week and is being organized by Time, Fortune and Wallpaper which is a mind-expanding combination that reflects the goal of the event. [1]

AIA Conference Thursday 21 – Saturday 23 June, New York, U.S. This three-day programme of conferences and networking events takes place in a different U.S. city every year. [2] World Architecture Festival Wednesday 28 – Friday 30 November, Amsterdam, Netherlands This three-day event moves to Amsterdam in 2018. [2] To help you out, we’ve compiled a definitive guide to over 50 of the best events of 2018 for your calendar. [2]

Last year, over 347,000 people attended the events throughout the city. [3] There?s a long list of worthwhile design conferences around the world, but after a few years of going to the same industry events, things can get old quickly. [1] Showrooms in the neighborhood, including David Weeks Studio, Lambert & Fils, Montauk Sofa and Stillfried Wien, will have extended hours and host cocktail events and exhibition openings. [15] Salone del Mobile Milan, Italy April 17-22 “The conference is a blend of speakers, installations, product introductions, and civic events that never disappoint. Atlanta Design Festival Saturday 26 May – Sunday 3 June 2018 Organised by MA! Design is Human, the 12th edition of the festival in the U.S. state of Georgia’s capital will include a series of architecture tours and activities around the city. [2] Dutch Design Week Saturday 20 – Sunday 28 October, Eindhoven, Netherlands Young and upcoming Netherlands-based designers present conceptual and experimental design across the city at this firm favourite on the design week schedule. [2] Dubai Design Week Monday 12 – Saturday 17 November, Dubai, UAE International designers present furniture, lighting, textiles and technology to markets in the Middle East and North Africa. [2] Clerkenwell Design Week Tuesday 22 – Thursday 24 May, London, UK The London district with the greatest concentration of furniture showroom and architecture and design studios hosts its own design week every May. [2] London Design Festival Saturday 15 – Sunday 23 September, London, UK London Design Festival, or LDF for short, takes place all over the UK capital. [2]

[1] London Festival of Architecture Friday 1 – Saturday 30 June, London, UK This month-long, city-wide celebration of architectural experimentation and practice takes Identity as its central theme for 2018. [2]

The City of Angels’s La Cienega Design Quarter plays host to dozens of events, discussions, and launches during its annual three-day event. [7] The tenth edition of Designmonat Graz will transform this Austrian city into a destination for design with 117 events in conjunction with 97 program partners. [7] Two new programs expand on that idea: Design Landmarks, an exploration of the stories behind Vancouver?s most impactful spaces; and Design Editions, a series of public events produced by the city?s design influencers. To celebrate NYCxDESIGN week, the Design Trust for Public Space has reserved 50 slots especially for Untapped Cities Insiders ! At this event, our Insiders will have the opportunity to mingle with project Fellows, DOT officials and Design Trust program staff at the El-Space pilot installation located underneath the Gowanus Expressway at 36th Street and 3rd Avenue in Sunset Park, and attend a panel discussion at Industry City (220 36th Street). [6] Organized around the concept of “Impact,” the event highlights how design and the work of Vancouver-based practitioners shape and transform society, the environment, and the world. [8]

This morning, we celebrated the official opening of Design Pavilion 2018, a nine-day design “happening” that takes place on Times Square’s five public pedestrian plazas that run along Broadway between 42nd and 47th Streets. [6] For the first year, the Times Square Alliance is showcasing prototypes developed through the Times Square Design Lab, which commissions proposals to enhance public space from New York City designers. This year, WantedDesign will celebrate the fifth edition of the Launch Pad (a platform for emerging designers) and honor Brooklyn?s own Oliver Haslegrave, founder and creative director of Home Studios, as the recipient of this year’s American Design Honors award. [7] The seventh edition of this two-day annual conference asks speakers–including Dutch textile designer Femke Van Gemert, Freitag founder Daniel Freitag, and the vice president of Google Creative Lab, Robert Wong–to address how design can contribute to climate action and social justice. [8] For its 15th edition, Brooklyn?s pioneering design show continues to champion collaborative design through exhibitions, panel discussions, and a marketplace spotlighting local designers such as Maker Anonymous, Sarnecky Design, and Foundrywood. [8] As part of Tribeca Design District?s programming, this exhibition by the design collective presents new work by 17 independent American designers ( Allied Maker, Phaedo, and Flat Vernacular, among them), who channel harmony and discord through spatial, acoustic, and experiential design. [8]

With its focus on independent American talent, this contemporary design show?s fifth iteration unveils new projects from 25 designers as part of its Selects group show. [8] What role do designers play in the city’s waste ecosystem? Design Talks NYC will host ” Waste is a Design Flaw, ” a talk presented by the NYC Department of Sanitation that will tackle this question. [6] On May 13th, from 12pm to 1pm, delve into the world of handcrafted design and custom manufacturing with a compelling discussion about what draws artists and designers to Brooklyn. [6] This year, Brooklyn Designs is hosting a variety of talks at the Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway). [6] In conjunction with Interior Design Magazine, the international furniture fair will present the third annual NYCxDesign Awards. [7] More than 800 international exhibitors gather for the 30th anniversary of the interior and furnishings fair, which includes spotlights on French design in the presentation “No Taste for Bad Taste,” handmade German objects in the “Handmade in Germany World Tour,” and emerging designers at the ICFF Studio. [8]

Architecture firms, design studios, and furniture manufacturers open their doors and create installations around the neighborhood. [7] This year, the spotlight falls on Inflate, a 25-foot-high futuristic and inflatable hub, conceptualized by a U.K. -based design studio that’s headed by creative director Nick Crosbie, and featuring lighting by L’Observatoire. [6] With traditional rules out the window, the Futurist Forum will explore what the practice of Interior Design may look like ten years from now. [16] Second half is dedicated to furniture, interior design and digital art. [4] In addition to furniture and interior design, it also showcases fashion and graphic design. [7]

NYCxDESIGN is an annual celebration of design that takes place across the city’s five boroughs in convention centers, schools, public parks, galleries, and more. On May 17th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, join a conversation and tour about El-Space, a design experiment aimed at turning the spaces under New York City’s hundreds of miles of elevated highways, subway lines, and bridges into valuable community assets. [6] This conversation and tour centers on El-Space, a design experiment aimed at improving pedestrian experience beneath New York City?s network of elevated transportation structures. [8]

Spring has sprung, and with it, one of the busiest months of the year for art and design. [8] For those interested in sustainable design and the “worldwide trend of bicycle riding”, check out Brookfield Place ( new this year ). [5]

We put together a guide to the best art and design fairs around the world to help you prioritize. [8] The legendary TEFAF fair returns to New York’s Park Avenue Armory with its spring edition, exhibiting a mix of modern and contemporary art and design. [7]

A panel tackles design strategies to innovate these spaces and a tour of a pilot installation below the Gowanus Expressway in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, which proposes ideas for enhanced lighting, pedestrian circulation, and environmental management. NYD encourages commercial opportunities, promotes new ideas and increases appreciation of exterior and interior design by all people, creative or not. [4] GenSpace will host a workshop on biomaterials, highlighting the latest designs using actual living organisms and cells. [5] The Times Square Alliance will inaugurate Times Square as a “lab for new solutions,” presenting New York?s design talent in one of NYC?s highest foot-trafficked areas. [5] El-Space is part of a project by the Design Trust for Public Space, in partnership the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), aimed at creating a more hospitable pedestrian experience, greater environmental resiliency, and enhanced lighting under the city’s tracks and roadways. [6]

Highlights include TEFAF, ICFF, and WantedDesign (three of the most important events during NYCxDesign), the Venice Architecture Biennale, and Clerkenwell Design Week in London?s creative hub, but don?t overlook design festivals in Austria, Prague, and Bucharest. [7] Formerly dubbed Design Is Human Atlanta, the Atlanta Design Festival will open doors for the renowned MA! Architecture Tours and present a series of talks and other events that aim to explore ways to improve infrastructure in and around cities through sustainability. [7]

From May 15th to the 19th, The Center for Architecture will host an Archtober preview, featuring five days of building tours that will take place across all five boroughs! The event will focus on public architecture, such as the Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility, the Elmhurst Library Branch and the Staten Island Museum, among other places. [6] Their annual tentpole events in Manhattan and Brooklyn during NYCxDESIGN bring together a mix of media, cultural institutions, trade organizations, students, and professionals at one of the best places to discover up-and-coming designers. [7] Programming during NYCxDESIGN will take place in a flexible event space there, designed by Kunle Adeyemi. [6] Dubbed the Citro”n Cultural Center, the temporary symposium will set intentions for the permanent space and present a wide range of art and architectural programming that includes installations, exhibitions, commissioned works, cultural events, and more. [7] In anticipation of the 2022 opening of the Kanal-Centre Pompidou–the planned massive center for contemporary art and architecture housed in the the former Citro”n car factory in Brussels– the Fondation Kanal has planned a 13-month-long set of events in the raw space before the transformation begins next summer.
