Edmunds: When shopping for an electric car, consider charging, range, leasing options Shopping for an electric vehicle means rethinking your approach to refueling and how far the EV car can travel between charges. [1] The Costs of a Solar System: $7,000 and Up Unless you’ll be charging electric cars for many years to come, it can be difficult to make an economic case for installing a solar system just to serve your EV. [2] On the downside, electric cars don’t hold their values as well as most conventional models, which eats into their long-term ownership costs. [3] CleanTechnica is the #1 cleantech-focused news & analysis website in the U.S. & the world, focusing primarily on electric cars, solar energy, wind energy, & energy storage. [4] The federal Department of Energy, which establishes the energy-use ratings, keeps track of them on its fuel economy site, one efficiency list for pure electric cars and another for plug-in hybrids. [2] I?ve owned electric cars for the last 7 years, and although they have fewer repairs than my gas cars, the few repairs that have been required have been more expensive. [4] To show how these plans work, we’ll use the example of Southern California Edison, based in the state where most electric cars are sold. [2] In 2010, I took an interest in electric cars because gas was getting expensive. [4] “He just started to take on board things like buying an electric car. [5] Sylvia Wilson, 70, is the first woman to drive around Australia in an electric car. [5]

That means many of the fully electric vehicles scheduled to hit the U.S. market in the next few years will start at or comfortably exceed the average sale price of a car in the country. [6] There is no tax incentive for the purchase of a used electric vehicle, so the used electric car buyer needs to factor that into the price he or she is willing to pay. [7] The company has sold an all-electric Golf since 2015, but the new I.D. hatchback — the first in a line of “I.D.” -branded electric cars — will be sold in three different range options, starting with a little less than 200 miles and a price of a little over $30,000. [6] The automakers behind these more affordable electric cars will look to take some momentum from the Chevy Bolt, which is one of the best electric cars on the market as far as price (under $40,000) and range (about 240 miles) are concerned. [6]

At the Paris Motor Show, Carlos Ghosn, the head of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, pointed to this as a boost for electric car sales, saying, “The higher the price of oil the more tailwind we?re going to have behind electric cars.” [8]

This means cars like the Kona electric or the Niro or the I.D., which will start around the same price as the Bolt have an opportunity. [6]

An electric car such as the Fiat 500e depreciates an average of $5,704 per year. [7] Wealthy families may be able to afford the over $41,000 average starting price for a car with one-half the driving distance of the average gas-powered car, but electric cars are an impractical luxury most families cannot afford. [9] For years, consumers essentially had two choices when it came to electric cars low price or usable range. [10] It stands to reason that consumers would purchase even fewer electric cars if the prices reflected the full production costs. [9]

If our MEDIA hadn’t turned away and buried the subject of EVs after oil-men Bush & Cheney somehow made it to the White House (instead of green Al Gore) not only would Chris Paine’s film “Who Killed the Electric Car” not have been neededthe EV revolution could have been fuelled, promoted and unleashed as I said 15-20 years ago. [11] Like the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars they will replace, Electric Cars (EV) come with their own potential cons. [7] As of June2016 update, cumulative global sales of the top selling plug-in electric cars were led by the Nissan Leaf (over 228,000), followed by the Tesla Model S (129,393), Volt/Ampera family (about 117,300), Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (about 107,400), Toyota Prius PHV (over 75,400), BYD Qin (56,191), Renault Zoe (51,193), BMW i3 (around 49,500), Mitsubishi i-MiEV family (about 37,600) and BYD Tang (37,509). [12] A normal car requires constant maintenance oil changes, filter changes, etc. An electric car doesn?t have to deal with the same issues so may require less maintenance but electric vehicles haven?t been on the roads for long enough for us to truly have a good sample size. [7] This is a list of production electric cars, classified by type of vehicle according to its speed capabilities: highway-capable, urban or city car, low speed or neighborhood electric vehicle, and supercars. [12] For reference, check out the data from the top five U.S. cities where it happens to be the least expensive to drive an electric car based (primarily) on lower electricity rates. [11] Why does the cheapest electric car costs so much ~25k? Electric cars have a very simple drivetrain. [13] Photo: Jaguar The annual parade of the world?s biggest auto shows is about to start this week in Paris, and for what really feels like the first time, a number of carmakers are finalizing, building, selling, or even nearing the delivery of their first flagship electric cars. [6] Maybe the first wave of luxury electric cars is not all bad: having desirable EVs at the top end of the market might help make affordable electric cars more attractive by association. [6] When creeping along, an electric car uses fractions of the energy a gas car does. [11] The Leaf is the top selling electric car in history, with global sales of more than 250,000 units through December 2016. 26 2016 LEAFs have an optional 40 kWh battery. [12] “Who Killed the Electric Car?” got it completely wrong on a very important point: Inadequate battery tech was very much one of the main reasons, arguably the main reason, why GM “killed” the EV1. [11] Lastly on the luxury side of things, some of the most well-known EV startups are delivering or nearing production of their own electric cars, but they won?t come cheap, either. [6] “Chiffres de vente & immatriculations de voitures ectriques en France” Sales figures & electric car registrations in France (in French). [12] Although electric cars are still a fraction of total car sales worldwide, their numbers are rising swiftly. [8] The electric car may finally be here, but it?s still not going to be for everyone. [6]

Electric cars still cost 7,800 euros more to produce on average than conventional ones, AlixPartners calculates. [14] “The higher the price of oil the more tailwind we’re going to have behind electric cars,” Carlos Ghosn, chairman Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. said at the Paris Motor Show on Wednesday. [15] Here?s the thing: At that price, about the average new car transaction price these days, the Bolt?s a solid deal. [16] Average Prius C transaction prices ($15,003) put it in just about every buyer’s wheelhouse, and the data showed these cars weren’t sticking around for long. [17]

Quarterly sales of the Model 3 now make it one of the best-selling sedans in the U.S. That’s all the more remarkable as an electric car with an average selling price of more than $50,000. [18] Increasing sales volume of Model 3 with the dual electric motor and a price increase that took the car some time ago was the main reason for the rise in the average price. [19]

In 2018, we finally have an electric car for the everyman the Chevy Bolt EV. Boasting a range of up to 238 miles and a cost under $30,000 after tax credits are factored in, the crossover-esque Bolt is reshaping the world of EVs by making them accessible to the masses. [10] Fuel responsibly – Avoid wasting money on premium grade gasoline unless your vehicle specifically requires it and, if you?re one of the 20 percent of Americans considering an electric car, these vehicles offer lower fuel and maintenance costs. [20] Unlike the most high-profile electric car to come out this year, the Tesla Model 3, the Bolt doesn?t come in a variety of battery and drivetrain configurations. [16] The Bolt is General Motors? first serious attempt at a modern, mainstream volume-selling electric car after years of making various hybrids. [16]

To calculate MPGe numbers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calculated that there are approximately 115,000 BTUs of energy in one gallon of gasoline, and used that formula to convey the amount power an electric car uses in terms most drivers are familiar with. [10] Lithium-Ion Battery: Often shortened to Li-Ion, batteries of this type are common on modern electric cars and use a compound called lithium-cobalt oxide to transfer and store energy. [10]

A better charging network will help assuage the main consumer concern about buying an electric car: that a lack of range will leave drivers stranded by empty batteries they can’t charge up. [15] That would leave mid-market competitors such as PSA and Renault, which can ill afford to sell large volumes of electric cars below cost, in a tougher bind. [14] Tesla?s first effort, the Tesla Roadster, was somewhat crude but provided massive thrills in a working package and proved that the idea of an American-built electric car could be not only feasible but fun. [21] Bold promises have been met with skepticism, but after driving the Tesla Model S we?re left wondering if the era of the electric car has arrived. [21] The Model S P100D isn?t just quick for an electric car, it?s the quickest car you can buy in 2018 period. [10] Why should you buy this? It?s the first affordable electric car worthy of a road trip. [10] It?s one of many examples of how this car wants to help usher in the electric car revolution by being, well. normal. [16] PARIS (Reuters) – Electric cars are poised to arrive en masse in European showrooms after years of hyped concept-car launches and billions in investment by automakers and suppliers. [14] The Bolt?s gear selector looks like something you?d find on any modern car, because that?s what everybody knows and understands, even though this single-speed electric car hardly needs it. [16] Technological improvements, stricter emissions standards, and changes in consumer tastes are driving electric cars further into the mainstream, and while they still aren?t close to replacing their gas-powered cousins, their ever-increasing ranges and penchant for quick acceleration make them a far better option than they once were. [10] Some people buy electric cars to save gas, and some buy them to make statements. [10] Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery: Often shortened to NiMH, batteries of this type are found on some older electric cars, however, most automakers prefer Lithium-Ion. [10] Oil’s march toward $100 a barrel is coming at just the right the time for auto makers investing billions in the switch to electric cars. [15] Even this one percent of sales is an overstatement of consumer demand; despite all of these subsidies, manufacturers still lose money on every electric car they sell. [9] In markets where incentives have been dropped, electric car sales have fallen. [14] The UFO-styled hatchback was the first affordable, mass-market electric car of the 21st century. [10] They and other carmakers are also mandated to sell more electric cars in China and a group of U.S. states led by California. [14] Why you should buy this? The Nissan Leaf is one of the most well-rounded electric cars on the market. [10]

The major price factor for electric cars is the battery pack. [22] The new car sales numbers for September from Norway are in and the country, which is already known for spearheading electrification, is reaching new levels of electric domination and low emission average. [23] An important development for Tesla is that the average selling price of the car reached $ 60,262 when the second quarter was $55,424. [19]

The early electric cars were smaller vehicles, but newer models are offering more spacious options. [22] Another encouraging sign is that utilities like Xcel Energy have special EV pricing plans that help customers save money by charging their electric cars overnight. [22] The electricity you use to charge your electric car is getting cleaner each year. [22] Until then, electric car sales will continue to be an exception for the upper crust and a select few intentional EV buyers. [24] As for electric car production, it will probably take a major industry disruption to spur carmakers toward full-on EV adoption. [24] Tesla has accomplished something no other automaker can claim: It’s made a relatively affordable electric car, the Model 3, that hundreds of thousands of people are lining up to buy. [18] The U.S. electric car manufacturer last has received enough criticism of the volume of production of the popular Model 3 but also if the c. [19] Between 2011 and 2017, the median electric car range increased by 56 percent. [25] Remember, 80 percent of electric car charging takes place at home 4, often with a 120-volt outlet – the kind you?d plug a lamp or TV into. [22] If they can afford the load for a 2000$ car gas car, they can afford the load for a 32000$ electric car. [24]

It has no complicated piece of machineries, which will result a car of very low price comparing to other electric cars. [26] According to the report, the average price paid for a new vehicle hit an all-time high of $36,848 in the U.S. in December of 2017 and dropped slightly to $35,828 in the second quarter of 2018, while the average price of a 1-3 year old used car in the same quarter was $22,489, a difference of nearly $13,500. [27] According to a report Monday by The Wall Street Journal, the gap between the price of the average new and used vehicle is as wide as it’s been in five years, pushing buyers away from dealerships and towards used car lots and classified ads. [27] Despite the gap in average price paid, used car prices are up about $865 from 2017, and auto retailers sold 10.4 million used cars in the second quarter of 2018, making the secondhand car market more lucrative than ever with a profit margin of nearly 7 percent last year. [27]

Now that the Chevrolet Bolt EV, second generation Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model 3 are on the road, drivers have more choices in affordable electric cars with long range. [28] With my 240V 60 AMP circuit, it will still charge at 32 AMP Rate then right? I did notice for example the Tesla 3 has an acceptance rate of either 7.7 kw(standard) or 9.6 kw (Long Range) but not sure how that relates to the 60 AMP (my garage) or the 32 AMP max (your chart)? And what about future capacity as I imagine electric car (and Battery) technology will keep advancing? Hope my question make sense. [28] Overall driving an electric car is very different you need to consider range instead of gas but running out of charge is definitely more challenging then stopping by a gas station but overall Its worth not having to pay for gas. [29] Most EV owners find they want a faster charge and upgrade to a Level 2 charging station soon after buying their electric car. [28] The electric car cost is depending upon the cost of battery which has been placed inside it, but in our technology the normal battery will be sufficient for the requirement, by this reason our technology is cost effective than other ones. [26] It is low cost much more efficient than present electric cars. [26] That?s why when people try to tell me that electric cars aren?t worth the cost, I have to correct them. [30] The concept of Hybrid electric car came up in the year of 1990. [26] “The performance of hybrid and electric cars, especially the Prius, has helped consumers abandon their initial concerns about battery life, and this perception change has contributed to the rising popularity of these vehicles.” [31] It suggests consumers are interested in hybrid and electric cars but can?t afford to buy a new one. [31] Later that year he decided to turn all cars to affordable electric cars. [26] Bluetooth, keyless entry, GPS. Driving the car doesn’t feel like an electric car and I have been in gas cars with less pick up. [29] We’ve uncovered cheap leases in October on electric cars, plug-in hybrids, hybrids and other fuel efficient cars starting at just $149/month. [32] As this car uses two sets of batteries and two sets of motor-generator combination along with it which provides more millage than a normal electric car. [26] It takes some getting used to driving an electric car but once you do its hard to imagine going back. [29] Edison used nickeliron batteries in the car but the batteries were however, were found to have very high internal resistance and were thus incapable of powering an electric car under many circumstances. [26] Thomas Edison and Henry Ford tried to make electric cars as efficient as the ICE engine. [26] ICE powered cars replaced electric cars due to mass production, inefficient and mainly due to low speed. [26] By the 1933 all electric cars was replaced by gasoline and ICE vehicles. [26] In addition to the range-extending gasoline engine, the 2018 BMW i3 electric car offers other hardware and software to make your commute safer and more comfortable. [33]

If Tesla successfully produces a middle-market vehicle at scale, then electric car production will grow exponentially, transforming the transportation and energy industries. [34] Musk and Panasonic are reducing the amount of cobalt in Tesla batteries, and British entrepreneur James Dyson, the re-inventor of vacuum cleaners, says he can also double energy capacity while slashing charging time for electric cars too. [34]

Our updated in-depth report contains all relevant data and insights and includes an excel file with a detailed list of electric cars, trucks, cargo vehicles, buses, and their specifications. [35] These discounts may help to offset the high cost of electric car insurance and ensure you get the most value for your money. [36] While it?s cheaper than its other models, it?s still classified as a luxury electric car, so insurance is on the pricey side. [36] Kalashnikov presented, on August 23, 2018, its new electric car inspired by a rare 1970s model which surprised visitors to the Kalashnikov stand at a defence trade outside Moscow last week. [34] The last time I wrote about electric cars, skeptical readers pointed out that they are only as clean as their source of electricity. [34] He is developing a high-speed underground transportation system linking Los Angeles to San Francisco, called the Hyperloop, and he is also the founder of Tesla, the world’s first independent global electric car company. [37] Elon Musk is in a dramatic race to produce an affordable electric car in large numbers because Tesla is about to lose its near monopoly on the luxury electric car market. [34] Electric cars are generally more expensive to insure than their gas counterparts. [36] The governments don?t want to discourage electric cars, but auto tariffs are an incredibly valuable source of revenue for countries that, in most cases, need the money. [38] As a luxury electric car, the Model 3 is expensive to fix, and you can?t take it to any old mechanic. [36] The Caribbean has some other reasons to be enthusiastic about electric cars powered by a solar electric grid. [38] Founded in 2013, a company called Megapower works in Barbados to set up a network of solar-powered charging stations, as well as selling electric cars. [38]

Depending on the Southern California Edison rate plan, a 2018 Tesla Model 3, rated at 26 kWh/100 miles, would cost as little as $1.56 for 50 miles’ worth of power if home charging started at 11 p.m. Or it could cost four times as much, $6.37, if the car was routinely charged during peak hours. [2] Another potential cost is a residential solar power system, which a growing number of people are considering, either for vehicle charging alone or for powering the car plus household. [2] I hope this article educated you to the fact that although costs vary widely based on where you live, an EV is almost always significantly cheaper to power than a gas or diesel car. [4] Personalize these savings based on your car, driving habits, electricity, and gas costs here. [4] When you buy a car that uses gas or diesel, you never know if there is going to be a disruption based on war or natural disaster and prices suddenly go way up. [4] If you plug in overnight with a Level 2 home charger, all you need is a car capable of meeting your daily driving needs. More range requires bigger batteries, and they raise the price of the car significantly. [1]

Here are some affordable EVs that deliver 100 miles or more on a charge (prices include destination fees): the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt (238 miles, $37,495); the 2018 Nissan Leaf (151 miles, $30,875); the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Electric (124 miles, $30,385); and the 2018 Kia Soul EV (111 miles, $33,145). [1] To figure out your cost of charging at home, multiply your vehicle’s kWh/100 miles figure by the electric rate for the time of day you’ll most often be charging (more about that in a minute). [2] According to a study of energy costs in the 52 largest U.S. cities conducted by Crescent Electric, it’s cheapest to run an EV in New Orleans, LA, while it’s costliest in New York City. [3] The leaders in this regard for 2018, with estimated annual electricity costs of $500, are the Hyundai Ioniq Electric at 150 e-mpg and the Tesla Model 3 at 136 e-mpg. [3] In an apples-to-apples comparison, the Ford Focus Electric, which is rated at the electric equivalent of 107 “e-mpg” in combined city/highway driving, is estimated to cost an owner $500 less to run each year than a gas-powered Focus at 28 mpg. [3]

Shopping for an electric vehicle means rethinking your approach to refueling and how far the EV car can travel between charges. [1] One of the plans charges separately for household use and EV charging, with lower rates for the cars. [2]

Take time to review the car displays that let you monitor the battery, charging and energy usage. [1] If you’re considering using solar energy to power your car, the cost of a home solar system might also figure into the equation. [2] When you buy a car that you are keeping for that long, you need to think not just about your needs and the costs of running it today, but how they will change over time. [4] My next article attempts the explain the science and the economics of why EVs cost less to run than other cars. [4] Charging the car cost $150.90 in total, partly because people often did not want payment. [5] Once you?ve paid for the car, your running costs are bugger all.” [5] Get estimates of these costs before you finalize your car deal. [1] Now, both studies and market experience have shown that alcohol has little promise for dramatically reducing the cost of fueling a car. [4]

Even though electric vehicles account for just a fraction of overall car sales, they are slowly gaining favor with buyers, particularly as second cars for daily commuting. [1] Leasing also shields you from the tendency of electric vehicles to lose more value than conventional cars. [1] An EV is inherently quieter than a gasoline-powered car because its electric motor is dramatically quieter than an engine. [1]

Shopping for an EV also means rethinking your approach to refueling and how far the car can travel between charges. [1]

This has been a great car for us, but with my wife now working more, we need something with either greater range or a gas powered range extender. [3] Conventional wisdom says that EVs are impractical if they don’t deliver the range of a conventional car. [1]

I try to keep my cars for 10 years if I like them and they are still reliable. [4] GM is expected to sell its 200,000th qualifying car early next year, so Chevrolet Bolt buyers should be poised to act soon, too. [1]

When you’re shopping for a gas-powered car, you look at the miles per gallon rating that the car has received. [2] An electric car’s energy consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (kWh/100 miles). [2] You’ll need to learn about charging, electric rate plans, and EV incentives and rebates. [1] This figure doesn’t include the cost of any permits or upgrades that your electric service might need. [1]

Costs for a Home Charging Setup In addition to understanding what it will cost to power an EV, it’s also important to know the cost of a key piece of technology: the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), along with the cost of its installation. [2]

That’s between $4,000 and $5,250 less than it will cost to keep the average 2018 gasoline-powered vehicle fueled over a five-year period, based on gas at $2.83 per gallon. [3] The cost of electricity is much more stable than the cost of gasoline, but it varies tremendously in the U.S. The residential average per kilowatt-hour currently ranges from 9.3 cents in Louisiana to 31.6 cents in Hawaii. [2] On average, the Environmental Protection Agency says the 2018 crop of EVs will cost an owner between $500 and $750 in electricity to drive 15,000 miles annually, depending on the model. [3] At average electricity rates around the country in mid-2018, that energy could cost as little as $3.08 or as much as $10.53. [2]

The average vehicle retains 37 percent of its original value after five years. [3]

Natural gas costs are low at this time, but have been very volatile over the last 20 years, with several significant price spikes. [4] The reason there is a greater chance of declining prices is that if there is a technology change in any of the substitute goods that dramatically reduces costs, the consumer can switch to that less expensive substitute. [4] The same trip would have, conservatively and based on city prices, cost more than $3,000 in petrol in a conventional sedan. [5]

You have to qualify for a car loan and make payments based on the full amount, then file for the credit on your return. [1] Most EVs have driver-adjustable levels of regenerative braking, so it might be worth checking your test car to find out which mode it’s in. [1] If you’re thinking of buying an all-electric or hybrid car, here are a few things to consider. [1]

For this article, I?m only going to focus on how fuel costs compare between gas cars and electric vehicles (EVs). [4] It’s getting easier all the time to find the electric vehicle supply equipment and rate plan that make ownership of a plug-in car as easy as flipping a light switch. [2]

Despite having higher sticker prices than comparable conventionally-powered models, owning an electric vehicle can still save an owner money over time. [3]

Some of the factors depressing EV prices include heavy new-vehicle incentives, low demand and the rapid pace of technological advancements, making new models more attractive. [1] The utilities can lower the price, giving the EV owner an incentive to charge in the day. [4]

Prices for quality Level 2 home systems can range from just under $200 to more than $1,000 before installation. [2] “As that happens, the wholesale price of electricity keeps falling during sunny hours. [4] Gas prices vary slightly by state, from a low of $2.52 a gallon in Alabama to a high of $3.77 a gallon in Hawaii. [4] Hydraulic fracking has increased the supply of natural gas, which has the potential to reduce the reduce price spikes. [4]

Goods that have more substitutes tend to have more stable prices and a greater chance of declining prices over time. [4]

For starters, the cost to run an electric vehicle can be considerably less than fueling a gas-powered ride. [3] Electric vehicles enjoy lower long-term maintenance costs than conventional autos. [3] The Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment: $200-$1,000 Plug-in vehicles today typically come with the ability to charge at home on standard household current, 120 volts, which is called Level 1 charging. [2] It took Sylvia 110 days and 20,396km door to door to navigate the Round Australia Electric Vehicle Superhighway – a loop of charging stations. [5] To power up faster, invest in 240-volt, Level 2 electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). [1]

The national average installed cost of a 6-kW system is $13,278, or $2.21 per watt, after applying the 30 percent federal tax credit, according to EnergySage, a Boston-based service that links homeowners with solar system providers across the country. [2] To find out your costs, look at your local gas station or find your statewide average here. [4] To find out what your costs will be, look at your utility bill or check out your statewide average here. [4]

For this piece, we’re using the national average (at the time of writing) $2.83 per gallon of regular gas from the EIA. [4] In the Los Angeles area, a 1-kilowatt solar system will produce an average of 4 kWh of power per day. [2] On average, a properly sized whole-house solar system will pay for itself over about seven years and will last for at least 25 years. [2]

Used-car listings on MYEV.com show several five-year-old Nissan Leafs priced at around $8,000 or less with average miles on the odometer. [3] We’re using the national average of 13.02 cents per kWh from June 2018 for this figure, pulled from the EIA. [4]

Nationally, average costs for a home EVSE installation with a short and uncomplicated 10-foot wiring, which runs from the electrical service box to the charging station location, range from $800 to $1,300, Sapp said. [2] To find your state’s average, check this state-by-state list of the average cost per kilowatt-hour. [2]

For the bigger picture of what it costs to charge a plug-in car, you should include the amortized cost of buying and installing a home charging station. [2] For plug-in cars with larger batteries, Level 2 is your best bet for overnight charging and quick top-ups. [2]

There are two parts to the efficiency advantage that EVs have over gas cars. [4]

The federal government offers EV buyers a one-time $7,500 tax credit, which effectively cuts the $37,495 Chevrolet Bolt EV’s base sticker price to $29,995. [3] Taking the one-time $7,500 federal tax credit effectively reduces the Leaf’s original sticker price to $26,112. [3]

Part 1 is that electric motors are much more efficient at converting electricity into motion than gasoline engines that convert much of the energy into heat, vibration, and sound. [4]

They will remain at least in some niche markets like off-road vehicles operating in off-grid areas (where there is no electric power to charge the car), areas with very cold climate (where using electric heating would drain the battery too quickly) or as cars built in a more traditional style for some purists like muscle cars. [11] “Lola Drayson B12-69EV electric racing car launched”. gizmag. [12]

Even if you set aside other market forces that could stop people from switching to an all-electric car (spotty charging infrastructure, range anxiety), the focus on EVs as luxury vehicles means this potential relief is still theoretical. [6] In the world’s largest car market, Raftery notes that ” China has passed a law which requires any vehicle maker to obtain a new energy vehicle score of at least 10% by 2019, which rises to 12% by 2020, and on up to 20% of sales by 2025. [11]

Battery technology still makes up a large part of the price of an all-electric car, and the market forces — material costs, overall supply — aren?t helping to quickly bring costs down. [6] Now, reduce that EV sticker price by 75-50% of whatever you?ve been shelled out in the last year to keep your current car going and multiply it again by the 5-10 years you plan to own the car. [39] That won?t come for a few years, though; instead, much like Tesla is doing by holding back the cheapest version of the Model 3, Lucid plans to sell a more expensive (and therefore higher-margin) spec of the car at the outset to help fund its efforts going forward. [6]

According to studies done by several government and industry engineering bodies all this breaks down the maintenance costs of an EV to between 75% and 50% less than a comparable ICE car. [39] Add to that their resale value is higher and will continue to distance itself from ICE, as people become less likely to buy a car with an ICE, since its resale value will continue to fall as the EV revolution advances. [11] With an EV, you?ll never need an oil change, spark plug replacement or emission test, among the many regular checks ICE drivers have to do to keep their car in top running order. [39]

And, there’s even a “growing list of cities that are passing legislation to ban diesel engined vehicles from driving on their streets ” further encouraging the uptake of clean cars. [11] Cost of ownership is what you have to pay to keep that new car fueled and roadworthy during the time you own it. [39] You can calculate that annual cost for your current car by visiting the handy CAA calculator here. [39] Assuming that you have a working donor car and you are NOT restoring or repairing anything, Chinese parts will cost you around USD$2000 WITHOUT batteries. [13] Pricing hasn?t been announced, but both cars should cost around $100,000. (The powertrain platform that the Taycan is being built on will also be shared with Audi for an even more expensive performance version of the E-tron, due out in 2020.) [6]

It released the hybrid i8 sports car in 2014, and it has made the all-electric i3 (which tops out at just around 150 miles of range in its latest configuration ) for basically just as long. [6] You can expect the range to diminish by 20%, something which will never happen in an ICE car with a fuel tank. [7]

Major car manufacturers Toyota (NYSE: TM ), Nissan ( OTCPK:NSANY ), and Honda (NYSE: HMC ) will phase out conventional vehicles within the next three decades in favor of electric vehicles. [40] Electric Vehicles bring with them a different set of mechanical problems and issues which could potentially appear when the car reaches a certain age. [7]

According to Raftery, “Electric vehicles are typically significantly cheaper to fuel as well (unless you happen to live somewhere that has particularly cheap petrol and extremely expensive electricity). [11] This is good news to one group, though: automakers launching new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. [8]

The price of electric per unit energy is similar to that of gasoline. [11] The short-range version is a bit of a compromise at under 200 miles, but the long-range Kona Electric beats out most of the competition (save for the most expensive Teslas) with an EPA-rated 253 miles per charge. [6] We desperately need a decent electric pick-up and mid-size electric SUV with 300+ mile range, both priced around $50K. [11] Chinese startup NIO, which recently went public in the U.S., plans to sell its electric SUVs outside of China, though its first one costs the equivalent of about $70,000 right now. [6] Officially unveiled earlier this year, the $69,500 five-seater electric SUV will start making it to customers this fall. [6] In the second quarter this year, Bloomberg reports 411,000 electrics delivered, 77 percent more than the same period last year. [8]

Bloomberg points out that as gas prices are rising, the total number of plug-in hybrid and battery-electric models on sale around the world is set to rise a full 20 percent to 216 different vehicles in the next year. [8] If you have to put less energy into the vehicle, at the same price per unit, that still makes it cheaper to fuel. [11]

Consumers will pivot from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles based on cost vs. price considerations. [40] Despite the fall in commodity prices at this moment, prices for battery metals should correct to the upside given the longer term perspective on the electric vehicle trend. [40]

That implies you can have double the range for half the price in the same battery mass(weight) in around 10 years. [11]

Porsche aims to launch its first fully-electric sports car next year when a new Taycan is introduced. [11] The more expensive the car is new, the more it?s going to depreciate after just a couple of months or years. [7]

Therefore, to travel 10,000 km annually (considered the norm in Canada) an EV owner will spend about $200 to power his or her car. [39] Continuing the luxury EV trend, Mercedes finally made a serious splash in the world of all-electric cars when it announced the EQC in early September. [6]

Tesla, too, will offer a $35,000 spec of its cheapest car in 2019: the Model 3. [6] Tesla is forcing car manufacturers to build EV’s because EV’s are what the consumer wants. [11]

Used ICE vehicle sales are booming in the USA because new cars are getting a bit too pricey. [11] Please enter a five-digit zip code to find cars for sale near you. [41]

I hybridized my car so I will use the combustion motor for emergency situations. [13] Switches off isn’t the correct terminology, the motor is “on” while the car is on. [11]

While ICE cars contain hundreds of moving parts susceptible to the normal wear and tear of driving, most EVs have fewer than a dozen. [39] What?s more, the regenerative braking of EVs mean that the chance of ever needing a brake job during the entire ownership of the car is more than remote. [39]

The dream of cars powered by electricity is finally becoming a reality. [6] While that certainly proves it’s possible, it ignores the reality that an oversized battery pack is currently too expensive to be put into a mainstream car. [11] I respectfully disagree, a car like the Chevy Volt was possible even in the 70s with NiCad batteries. [11] If youre in the U.S. I think most, if not all states have exceptions for home built cars. [13] The new all-electric car closest to hitting the road in the U.S. is the Jaguar I-Pace. [6]

While your car is just sitting there, it will take off automatically and be used for ride sharing paying for itself. [11] Porsche plans to stop offering diesel versions of its cars. [11] It?s otherwise a very Mercedes car, with a typically premium interior that centers on the company?s sharp-looking MBUX interface, one of the most attractive automaker-provided in-car infotainment systems. [6] By comparison, Canadians driving ICE cars will pay $1,600 to cover that same distance on a regular blend. [39]

As of December2016 update, the Nissan Leaf is the world’s best-selling plug-in car in history with more than 250,000 units delivered, followed by the Tesla Model S with over 158,000 sales, the Volt/Ampera family of vehicles with 134,500 vehicles sold, and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with about 116,500 units sold through November 2016. [12]

A hybrid vehicle such as the Ford Fusion Hybrid depreciates an average of $3,301 per year. [7] This is driving up gasoline prices at the pump, with the average across the USA almost breaching $3 per gallon, also for the first time since 2014. [8]

By 2020 the cost of batteries will have fallen 90% in 10 years, and the price will continue to drop.” [11] At the Tesla shareholder meeting on June 5th of this year, Elon Musk stated that Tesla would be at $100 per kWh within 2 years. $100 per kWh is widely agreed to be the figure where EVs and ICE vehicles will have a comparable upfront purchase price. [11]

Electricity price is $0.125 / KWh factoring in the fixed costs, whether you consume 1 KWh/ month or 1,000 KWh/month you have to pay the fixed cost of $20 $25. [11] Just exclude this and take the variable cost and the price of electricity will be much lesser. [11]

Lucid Motors, which just struck a $1 billion deal with Saudi Arabia?s sovereign wealth fund, has targeted a price of $60,000 for the base version of its Lucid Air luxury EV, which has lay-back rear seats and a Tesla-style touchscreen dashboard. [6] SF Motors, another company from China with similar ambitions (and backed by Chinese automaker Sokon), will be in a similar price range. [6]

Only a few models will approach the more affordable mid-$30,000 starting price set by GM?s Bolt. [6]

Crescent Electric assumed 30 mile round-trip commutes, which add to about 7,800 miles/yr. [11] BYD has already delivered its first electric refuse truck in North America to Palo Alto. [40] While nearly every automaker has made a grand promise about shifting to electric power by the mid-2020s, the rollout won?t be instant here. [6] The transition has just begun, but the move from ICE vehicles to electric will happen sooner and more quickly than most people suspect.” [11]

The upfront cost of an electric vehicle can be depreciated over a far longer time lowering the vehicle’s total cost of ownership significantly EVs will just keep on working. [11] Electric Vehicle Depreciation – the Hidden Cost of Electric Vehicles meta name”description” content”Buying an electric vehicle? While you may save on fuel, you have to think about depreciation. [7] Electric vehicle sales may soar 24 percent each year on average through to 2030 with China expected to become the biggest market. [40] The truth is that it’s very far from the norm, and future average EV range is rather unlikely to exceed 300-350 miles. [11]

In Canada, the national average cost of the electricity EVs use is 12 cents/kWh while fuel costs run from $1.20 to $1.50 per liter for regular gas, 10 cents/liter more for a premium blend. [39] A standard Internal Combustion Engine sedan such as the Chevrolet Cruze depreciates an average of $2,114 per year. [7] I believe I was told that the interest rate would be about 3.3% but the sales person told me that the average could be 5%. [42]

You should factor in the high cost of depreciation when considering how much an electric vehicle will save you in yearly running costs, but for some, the pros may outweigh the cons. [7] Just a quick glance at the range of today’s electric vehicles show this trend clearly — if others continue to follow the leader (aka Tesla), range should continue to steadily improve. [11] When electric vehicles have a range of 1,000km, it is the ICE vehicles which start to have a range problem.” [11]

Global charging infrastructure to grow in tandem with electric vehicle production. [40] Here are the latest developments in the electric vehicle and battery metals markets. [40] The electric vehicle battery industry is moving towards an 80% nickel battery chemistry. [40] As an electric vehicle reaches the end of its battery life cycle, its value will drop substantially because the new owner is aware he?ll have to replace it relatively soon. [7]

It’s reported that “Contrary to what many believe, the batteries in electric vehicles don’t degrade over time (or over miles/kilometers driven either). [11] Electric vehicle demand will impact copper positively as electric vehicles require four to five times for copper. [40]

Choosing an electric vehicle is a great choice if you want to cut your oil use and still have an exceptional driving experience. [7] Cities are adopting or trying out electric vehicles first in public transportation. [40] Electric vehicles usually have robust 10-year warranties for their batteries, but there?s at least a fear that buying a used electric vehicle could mean buying something that will be quickly obsolete. [7] Markedly, there?s the Internal Revenue Service tax credit of up to $7,500 for the purchase of a new electric vehicle. [7]

It should be easier and cheaper to replace your old car’s battery in 10 years, than it is now (if battery costs keep going down). [11] Folks should realize a gas car getting 30mpg, for a more realistic 12k miles all year, pays ~$1,200 (@$3ea). [11] Sitting in traffic the motor doesn’t consume energy when it’s not moving, unlike a gas car. [11]

Once you go EV you aint goin back is another plus and the collapse of the used car market is going to be the LARGEST factor in accelerating the move to EV’s. [11]

Even considering the purchase rebates and Scrap-it potential a new EV buyer has to lower the price, it’s still hard for many to get their heads around all the changes owning an EV offers. [39] That?s not a lot of money if you compare it to the $100,000 Model S, but it?s still a considerable amount considering that for the same price you can get a fully decked-out 2018 Ford Focus, an Accord, or even something like a V6 Camaro. [7] The ban on manufacturing ICE vehicles won’t happen in most countries until at least 2040, which means people who buy new and used ICE vehicles in 2039 will need assurances that gasoline will be available at reasonable prices until at least 2050. [11] There will be a lot of used ICE vehicles at reasonable prices for decades. [11]

Compared to the future prices of wind and solar, all hydrocarbon fuels are too expensive. [11] Nickel price is still very cheap compared to other battery metals such as cobalt and lithium. [40] All of this is ticking oil prices toward $100 per barrel, the highest price since 2014. [8]

That tax credit functions kind of like a consumer rebate, discounting the sticker price. [6]

“But, car owners that like to change vehicles frequently should be thinking about the resale value – not just the purchase price – when choosing their next ride.” [20] Buyers often only give priority to purchase price and monthly payment when choosing a new car, sometimes selecting a vehicle based on the best deal available. [20]

By pushing the electric range to 53 miles (420 miles total), it made the car mainly an EV for drivers. [17] Electric vehicles (EVs) generally cost about half as much to run, have lower maintenance costs and emit 25x less emissions than gasoline-powered cars! Our Go Electric EV discount program offers you thousands in savings when you choose to drive electric. [43] Interested in learning more about electric vehicles? Our informational flier includes cost comparisons between electric vehicles and gas-powered cars, the difference between electric electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in electric vehicles, and the different levels of charging. [43]

FILE PHOTO: The EQC, the first fully electric Mercedes car is shown at a presentation in Stockholm, Sweden September 4, 2018. [14] If you put a totally car agnostic person into it, they may not even realize it?s electric. [16] Due to current technological constraints, electric vehicles must become a much larger share of total cars sold by 2025 in order to meet the 54.5 miles per gallon standard, perhaps as high as 30 percent. [9] This further reduces the value of an electric vehicle because it is unsuitable for driving long distances where the car would need to be recharged in the middle of the trip. [9]

Stretching a car loan over five, six or even seven years may be an effective way to lower payments, but owners may quickly find themselves owing more than the vehicle is worth. [20] The most exciting vehicle on the market isn?t a million-dollar supercar, a broad-shouldered truck, or a seven-passenger SUV. No, the car the world can?t wait to drive is an all-electric sedan from a startup automaker called Tesla. [10] AAA urges car buyers to think about both market trends and length of ownership when shopping for their next vehicle purchase. [20]

Yeah, there was the Chevrolet Spark EV before this, but with a range of only 82 miles it was too limited to be your only car, the way the Bolt wants to be. [16] Weirdness aside, the i3 is one of the most energy-efficient cars currently sold in the U.S., with an EPA-rated 118 MPGe combined for the 2017 model, which also has up to 114 miles of range. [10] I was kind of surprised that I came to many of the same conclusions about the Bolt that my colleague Kristen Lee did about the Tesla Model 3 Long Range she tested. (I was on vacation when she had that car, and I did not get to drive it.) [16] It was interesting to drive this nearly back-to-back with the Tesla Model 3 Performance, a car I really enjoyed spending time with. [16] Tesla will also be coming out with a new Roadster model in 2020, and Tesla is already saying it will be the quickest car in the world. [21]

On its second day, the European Parliament votes on plans to cut carbon dioxide car emissions by as much as 45 percent by 2030 from an average 95 grammes per kilometer in 2021 – a goal many automakers are already in danger of missing, on pain of fines running to hundreds of millions of euros. [14] The standard sets an average fuel economy that a manufacturer?s fleet of cars must meet. [9]

Like Kristen, I?m not ready to have this as my only car, and not just for charging and range reasons. [16] ORLANDO, Fla. (Sep. 13, 2018) – AAA?s 2018 Your Driving Costs study reveals the largest expense associated with purchasing a new car is something many drivers fail to consider – depreciation. [20] Aston Martin has plans for battery-powered Rapide sports car, complete with a top speed of 155 miles per hour. [15] Leasing is similarly affected since payments are based in part on the projected residual value of the car at the end of the lease, serving as a good indicator of which models experience higher or lower depreciation. [20] The REx model is no longer a zero-emissions car, but it becomes a lot more usable than the standard battery-powered i3. [10] The car slows up when you lift off the accelerator as it recaptures energy for the battery. [16] With its 100kWh battery, the P100D boasts a 0 to 60 time of just 2.5 seconds, making it one of the quickest production cars on the planet. [10] That promises more red ink, as discounted battery car sales finally take off. [14] Find compact cars, subcompact cars, family sedans, luxury cars, sportscars, exotics, hybrids SUVs, trucks and crossovers for sale in your area. [21]

The Nissan Leaf is a stylish, zero-emissions way to commute without sacrificing tech, waiting for years, or spending luxury car money. [10] Toyota Prius, the most economical car of its generation, pushed its EPA-estimate to an amazing 56 mpg in the Eco trim that year. [17]

Here?s where things got tricky: My attempts to charge a Bolt in New York City ate the better part of a single day and proved to be pretty maddening, but the car wasn?t at fault for that. [16] VW?s new EV architecture is scalable and adaptable enough to produce anything from sports cars to cargo vans. [10] With two seats, a high sticker price and a range that is still somewhat limited, Tesla?s sports car isn?t a mainstream solution to high-emissions motoring. [21] As consumers, Americans can, and frequently do, purchase solar panels, energy efficient appliances, and fuel-efficient cars without any government mandate to do so. [9] Like all General Motors cars it can be had with unlimited 4G LTE WiFi, and the speeds are excellent. [16] Like all new Formula E cars, Audi’s latest incorporates some important changes. [10] With options like that sweet roof rack, our car came to $43,905. [16]

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is rather unconventional and controversial but has amassed a huge following for his radical ideas, high-tech cars, and large Supercharging network. [21] A Tesla semi truck is also being developed along with the Hyperloop, and the Boring Company is digging a series of underground tunnels that will transport cars on sleds to their destinations. [21]

Thanks to Tesla’s over-the-air updates, the Model 3 is always improving, and can be reconfigured according to your needs and wants even after you buy the car. [10] It has enough juice that you can pass and dart between other cars when you need to with ease, and it?s small enough that it?s remarkably easy to park. [16] It?s quiet, smooth, and luxury car cozy, but with a handling prowess absent from most battery-powered cars currently on the market. [10]

I ended up stashing it overnight at another garage near the grocery store, and–lo and behold–when I returned the next morning the car had a near-full battery. [16] “Keep your car for a long time and keep it well-maintained or even consider buying a quality, pre-owned vehicle.” [20] The White House has published a policy initiative that outlines how it plans to promote the development of self-driving cars. [10] The Bolt doesn?t have the intense, almost scary acceleration that car has. [16] With the bland seats, the econo-hatch looks and the decidedly not premium interior, the Bolt is not a mid-$40,000 car. [16] Practicality and affordability are just two elements of a good car though, but thankfully, the Bolt has much more up its sleeve. [10]

While electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are still a tiny fraction of global sales, growth rates have been spectacular. [15] More than 200 electric and plug-in model launches are already scheduled globally over the next three years. [14] Tricks learned from the Bolt EV allow you to regain some electric range while driving – a novel skill that comes in handy. [10] While we prefer the more expensive Model 3, if you won’t be able to your hands on a Model 3 for a while (and need an electric commuter ASAP), the Bolt is a fantastic alternative. [10]

Lithium-ion batteries, which claim 40 percent of an electric car’s value, face global cobalt and nickel shortages that will pull the other way, inflating costs as production volumes rise. [14] For companies preparing to bring a record number of electric and hybrid models to market in 2019, oil’s rally could turbocharge demand. [15] Volkswagen has said the ID hatchback, due to open the brand’s electric onslaught next year, will be priced close to conventionally powered versions of the Golf compact. [14] The Model S electric sedan has been a hit since day one, and the new Model 3 takes everything people love about the Model S and puts it into a more affordable package. [21] Mercedes also says the EQC electric SUV will be priced close to its GLC cousin to tackle Tesla’s $49,000 Model 3. [14]

It?s not just the electric powertrain the i3 features an advanced carbon fiber-reinforced plastic body shell, wheels that look like pizza cutters, and an interior trimmed in a plant-based material called kenaf. [10] Why should you buy this? It’s fast and luxurious like a Jag should be (and electric). [10]

BMW’s Mini unit also plans to release the much-anticipated Mini Electric hatchback. [15]

Peninsula Clean Energy offers electric vehicle rates that mirror PG&E’s rates, at a 5% lower cost. [43] Fuel prices reached a four-year high last month, concentrating consumers’ minds on the relative costs of internal combustion versus electric motors. [15] Below are the prices and sites where electric vehicle owners can quickly charge their vehicles. [44] “VW is about to launch a load of electric vehicles at the same price as gasolines, and therefore at a loss,” said Laurent Petizon, a managing director at consulting firm AlixPartners. [14]

In the second quarter, deliveries increased by 77 percent year-on-year to 411,000 vehicles worldwide, according to Bloomberg NEF. Even before the latest rally in oil prices, that was forecast to rise a further 49 percent by the same quarter next year. [15] French rival PSA will price its new rechargeable hybrids to match diesel leasing rates, program director Olivier Salvat told reporters on a recent factory visit – adding that the carmaker aimed to avoid losing money on each vehicle sold. [14] A safe, reliable vehicle can be found at an attractive price point. [20]

On the other end of the spectrum, luxury EVs like the Tesla Model S could top 300 miles between charges, but their price tags made them an unrealistic option for most. [10] Over on the used market, that price for models from the last three years came way down. [17] In the U.S., average gasoline prices are on the verge of breaching $3 a gallon for the first time since 2014. [15] Average transaction prices for the Prius ($18,565) weren’t that low, either. [17]

On average, this BMW plug-in left the lot in 33 days, or 13 days faster than the typical vehicle. [17] AAA?s Your Driving Costs found the average cost to own and operate a new vehicle in 2018 is $8,849 per year. [20]

The BMW i3 is about as different from other cars as can be. [10] While that’s below the six-figure average for a new model, that’s still a hefty sum for a used car. [17] On average, Volt sold for $19,481 through the first seven months of the year, and it only lasted 34.3 days on the market. [17] Prius C sold in an average of 29.6 days 17 days faster than the average and 38 days better than the slowest on the used market. [17]

If fully implemented, the average standard will eventually rise to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. [9] These regulations, known as the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, were implemented in 1975 following the 1973-74 Arab Oil Embargo. [9] It?s a quasi-crossover hatchback thing, taller than your average hatch but not as huge as a true SUV, though it is surprisingly roomy inside. [16]

Early signs suggest electric-car prices may fall sooner and faster than production costs, as carmakers adjust for stalled emissions progress and weak consumer appetite. [14] When that cost gap is reflected in the price, few are sold. [14]

Crude oil has jumped 27 percent this year to more than $85 a barrel and major traders predict prices could reach $100 this winter as U.S. sanction of Iranian exports strain global supply. [15] All of that is before the $7,500 EV tax credit, which would bring its “true” price to $36,405. [16] We examine the qualities of the exterior and interior and judge them based on our expertise and experience in the context of the vehicle?s category and price range. [10] We live in the real world though, and with a starting price of $84,300, the fact remains that many people simply can?t afford to drive a Tesla. [10] Slow down – When gas prices are high, small changes in the way you drive can make a big difference. [20] Motorists can map a route, identify gas prices, find discounts, book a hotel and access AAA roadside assistance with the AAA Mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android. [20]

Why would it? Not all EVs are the same, and this one?s also half the price of that. [16] The Model 3 brings Tesla?s brilliant technology and design down to a (somewhat) affordable price. [10] They often claim that more restrictive regulations will not pose a financial burden because the more fuel efficient or zero emission alternatives are viable and price competitive. [9] With new prices running buyers well over $40,000 without options, it’s a safe bet used car shoppers come looking for a bargain. [17] The five used cars that sold the quickest this year all have electric motors powering them to some degree. [17]

Charging an electric vehicle battery takes between five and ten hours (one hour at best using fast charging technology). [9] If we were to judge based on capability alone, the Tesla Model S would unquestionably be our top pick for the best electric vehicle. [10] Tesla is based in California and is pioneering the American development of electric vehicles. [21] The $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit will get cut in half by the beginning of 2019 for Tesla and GM consumers because each brand will have sold over 200,000 electric vehicles; after the second quarter it will get cut in half again before being phased out completely at the end of 2019. [15] ELECTRIC CROSSOVERS: Tesla, Nissan and Chevy might have kickstarted the electric vehicle market but luxury automakers such as Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW and Audi are launching a slew of electric (BEV) crossover vehicles to compete in America’s hottest segment. [15]

“People are not going to buy electric vehicles if we don’t get rid of range anxiety,” said Carlos Tavares, CEO of PSA Group, France’s largest carmaker. [15] It is the responsibility of participants to mention the Peninsula Clean Energy New Electric Vehicle Promotion program when visiting participating dealerships. [43] The dealers and manufacturers are not acting as agents for Peninsula Clean Energy, or on behalf of Peninsula Clean Energy, and Peninsula Clean Energy is not acting as your agent, or on your behalf, in connection with any electric vehicle purchase or lease transaction. [43]

Consult a tax professional regarding applicability of the Federal Tax Credit for Plug-in Electric Vehicles. [43] Why should you buy this? It is simply the best electric vehicle on sale. [10] As an electric vehicle purchaser/lessor you are responsible for charges for tax, title, license, and registration. [43]

Not as wild-looking as its predecessor, the new Leaf offers 150 miles of range thanks to a 40kWh battery pack that feeds a 147-hp electric motor. [10] Mitsubishi, Kia, Volvo, BMW and other automakers have plug-in hybrid(PHEV), which have a gas engine and electric motor or motors that can be charged at home, on the crossover market segment. [15] DC electric motors are generally simpler and cheaper than AC electric motors, however they are less efficient. [10]

If Tesla can?t figure out how to make more cars soon, it could open a lane for rivals from Detroit and overseas to establish the high-volume market for a $35,000 electric car–one that Tesla has had in its sights from its very beginning. [18] Tesla expectations for a positive and profitable third quarter are growing, as sales of Model 3 are growing at a steady pace in America, and in August it has achieved a new record with some 17,800 vehicles being delivered, compared to 14,250 cars July. [19] Unsurprisingly, diesel car sales are down, but all-electric vehicles sales also appear to be getting market shares from plug-in hybrids. [23]

If I take out a typical car load (data from cars.com) I would pay 220 more per month for a car that costs 12000 more, or 2600/year. [24] I think the other car companies are going to have to lower prices first. [45] Analysts have been cautiously optimistic for months while attempting to project when high-interest rates, Federal rate hikes, and high new car prices would finally. [24]

The ability to say the destination location and have the car give directions, location and duration of charging as well as giving charge available on arrival was beyond awesome and it alleviated any lingering range anxiety we had. [45] You can even plug your car into a grounded 120-volt outlet (yes, the same kind that powers your toaster), which adds about 40 miles of charge in 9 hours. [25]

None of the models revealed so far has any hope of going into volume production by 2020, and their specs are only competitive vs Tesla cars from 2015. [45] Most of the cars Tesla sells today are priced to compete with luxury models made by Mercedes, BMW and Porsche. [18] Bottom line is the Tesla Supercharger network combined with in car software is light years ahead of the competition at the moment. [45] Tesla is less a car company, more an ‘energy’ company with battery production as it’s foundation. [45] Tesla has said they would allow it but other car companies haven?t wanted to play ball to pay for the electricity share of their customers. [45] The next step for Tesla will be to prove that it can sustain those volumes and sell the cars profitably, even as it introduces lower-priced versions and opens up sales to overseas markets. [18] In mercedes defense, Tesla’s closest competitor to this car (model y) isnt for sale either. [45] We built our own model to estimate weekly output of the car that could make or break Elon Musk’s master plan. [18]

An EV Mercedes mostly competes with an ICE Mercedes, then with other ICE luxury cars, and only barely with luxury EVs. [45] These other car companies are making EVs based on todays tech but releasing in two years. [45]

Cars are plugged in Wednesday to electric vehicle chargers in the Convention Center Ramp in Cedar Rapids. [46]

Many of your neighbors are already enjoying the advantages of owning or leasing an EV. Approximately 1140 plug-in electric and fuel cell vehicles are now present in our community, which means that we’re 46 percent of the way toward the city of Davis goal of having 2,500 such vehicles by 2020. [25] There have been plenty of announcements from carmakers but EVs (electric vehicles) are still mainly for the elite. [24]

Plus the bigger demand for battery chemicals as the other manufacturers bring their electric / hybrids into production. [45] Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants his electric-car company to become a dominant mass-production player that eventually extends its reach to electric trucks and beyond. [18] I am not a fan of taxpayers footing the bill for our “electric gas stations”. [45] Like being out of Marvel super-heroes, Ford new consept truck looks very futuristic and even electric, and features standalone level 4 t. [19] That?s the kind of power your electric clothes dryer requires. [22]

The Bloomberg Model 3 tracker has been accurate, outperforming the average estimate of Wall Street analysts every quarter since its introduction and coming within 220 cars of Tesla’s reported output for the third quarter of 2018. [18] EDIT: GM Bolt and Nissan Leaf are both decent cars and a lot cheaper than Model 3, and yet they got annihilated by Model 3 in the U.S. This fact shows that global automobile market is already entering a phase of major disruption and many old rules will no longer apply. [45] Note that Model 3 for August sold more cars than all sales made by BMW in the U.S. that same month. [19]

It?s a crude way to track the rollout because not all VINs are produced sequentially, deliveries can be delayed, and even the most enterprising Model 3 sleuths will inevitably miss some newly released cars. [18]

Tesla delivered about 2,300 cars in the country during the third quarter and over 2,000 of them were delivered in the last month. [23] The next morning, the car is ready to go with a full battery. [25] In China you are talking maybe $80k-90k for those other cars vs something ridiculous like $140k for a base X after the tarifs. [45] That plan only works if the company can figure out how to make exponentially more cars. [18]

The average EV can?t go as far between fueling as the average combustion-engine vehicle. [25] Most Americans drive an average of 37 miles a day, well within the range of most EVs. Even with an extreme 70-mile round trip commute, it?s unlikely you?ll need to charge remotely. [22] Average price now is ~100k for model s and ~55k for model 3 so average tesla price is (200000+50005)/7000 68k so Tesla is getting cheaper. [45] Tesla base prices have been going up, a lot, over the last 4 years. [45] With current U.S. gas prices trending up 10 the last three years and currently ranging from $2.50 to nearly $4 a gallon, it?s a notable difference. [22] While gas prices remain affordable, demand for electric vehicles remains low. [24] In the electric vehicle industry, a fast charge comes with a price. [46]

Mark Schuling, Iowa’s consumer advocate, said energy sold from an electric vehicle charging station already has been purchased from the utility at retail cost, so the measurement for sale by the retailer shouldn’t really matter. [46] The study follows legislation signed earlier this year by Gov. Kim Reynolds to evaluate the costs and benefits of different electric vehicle infrastructure support. [46] Electric vehicles have many advantages over combustion-engine vehicles, including less maintenance and lower fuel costs. [25]

Following a request by the truck stop, the Iowa Utilities Board, which regulates state utilities, last month opened an investigation into Alliant Energy’s 2017 energy tariff, which prohibits the sale of energy by the kilowatt-hour for electric vehicle charging. [46] The board also is considering if the sale of energy by a retailer for electric vehicle charging should be allowed by the kilowatt-hour statewide. [46] According to the economic development authority’s report, at least a dozen states have passed laws allowing retailers to sell energy for electric vehicle charging without acting as a utility. [46] Outside of Tesla Motors’ growing network of supercharger stations — available only to Tesla owners — in the state, Iowa’s electric vehicle charging network remains underdeveloped. [46] “So there is no loss of sales as a result of electric vehicle charging stations,” he said. [46] “People need them out there along the roads for traveling, so I don’t understand why any utility is throwing up a roadblock for electric vehicle charging. [46]

Vertically integrating energy solutions with solar, battery storage, and an electric vehicle fleet. [45] Meier said Iowa 80 Truckstop officials wish to add electric vehicle charging stations to the truck stop, but Alliant’s energy tariff has put the plan — which she said would add six fast-charging stations — on hold. [46] A 2016 report by the Iowa Economic Development Authority entitled “Advancing Iowa’s Electric Vehicle Market” notes that allowing owners of charging stations to bill directly for electricity opens the door to increased investment in Iowa’s fast-charging infrastructure. [46] Advocates of fast-charging stations say that rule is stifling Iowa’s electric vehicle infrastructure. (Stephen Mally/The Gazette) A parking spot at the Convention Center Ramp in Cedar Rapids is marked for an electric vehicle. (Stephen Mally/The Gazette) An electric vehicle charging station in the short-term parking lot at The Eastern Iowa Airport is available Wednesday for use. [46] Nuñez said it’s important to expand Iowa’s stock of electric vehicle charging stations, but added that it needs to be done carefully. [46]

Alliant offers customers rebates on both electric vehicle and charging infrastructure investments. [46] We are kind of getting used to Norway breaking new records for electric vehicle adoption, but it is still quite impressive. [23] Among 17.2 million new vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2017, barely one percent were electric vehicles. [24]

Good range doesn?t have to come at a high price; three EVs priced at less than $30,000 have ranges between 115 and 150 miles. [25] At least for the prices of electricity and gas where I live. [24] “We all post our price per gallon and you know it driving down the street. [46] At that price, building EVs simply isn?t financially feasible. [24] Outside the U.S. you are looking at much greater price differences. [45] Our news comes officially from the U.S. in a Nissan announcement, which appears in. announcement of the new LEAF prices on the other sid. [19]

The Model 3–with a sticker price as low as $35,000, but currently only available in more expensive configurations–is Tesla?s first step into the mainstream. [18]

An update to the model on Oct. 2 adopted a 13-week trailing average for our weekly estimate. [18] According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the average American in 2018 drives 37 miles a day. [25] Today the average EV is going greater distances than ever before. [22] They get more EV options than your average market, but it is still somewhat limited. [23]

An average cost per kWh to build EV batteries is around $200. [24]

That would be 46$ for 250 miles in the gas car. so I save $30 for each 250 miles. [24]

We are in the process of completely re-doing our garage and want to add a In-home charging capability for future Electric or Hybrid Car (we don’t have 1 as of now). [28] Upgrading to a Level 2 charging station for that owner becomes a necessity, especially if the car is fully electric and there aren?t any public charging stations at the workplace or nearby. [28] We took the concept of Tesla cars and hybrid car concept for our low cost electric vehicle. [26] This car will be more efficient than Tesla cars as well as it will overcome the disadvantages of Hybrid cars by use of electric motor and generator only and it is More efficient than Tesla cars in terms of millage and cost effective than both of them. [26] The power supply of hybrid car comes from onboard batteries and ICE. In HEV-IC engine cooperates with an electric motor for optimum use of engine so the HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is better efficient than the ICE powered vehicle. [26] One is Tesla concept cars which run on induction motors and the other one is a Hybrid car which uses both ICE and electric motor. [26]

Tesla cars use induction motors and lithium ion batteries to power up the vehicle. [26] The main disadvantage of the steam powered cars is that the vehicle stops every ten to fifteen minutes to release steam that is used to power up the engine which leads to heavy weight to the vehicles. [26] For one I know that the car can not be moved while attached to some charging stations, and electricity will not be delivered if there is a fault in the vehicle. [28] Use MyKBB to save vehicles, track listings, compare cars and access your content from any device. [33] Demand for vehicles has still stayed strong, and as more new vehicles reach the end of their lease terms, there’s a surplus of low-mileage, relatively new cars, trucks, and SUVs for buyers to choose from. [27]

I think it is an excellent, no frills car that gets me from A to B and only costs me the electricity that it takes to charge it. [29] Charging is as easy as it is with any other device when you use the available in-home charging unit, and with Location-Based Charging capabilities, you?ll be able to decide what time your car starts to charge when you plug in at home. [30] Let us consider start motor (M1) by using battery (B1), at that point of time motor (M1) will supplying the required output of the car and also applied a torque for rotating the motor (M2) that’s why a charge will be generated to the motor (M2). [26] Simultaneously when the charge of battery (B1) will be finished then battery (B2) will carry on the power supply of the car. [26]

If we consider how long the average car lasts (around eleven years), then that means around $22,000 goes into the gas tank of nearly every car in America, in many cases even more than that. [30] This car will be running on a clean energy, won’t emit any harmful gas, will be less noisy than a car which runs on gasoline. [26] This is a fun car to drive once you get used to its unique power delivery and the funky feel of its regenerative braking system, which recharges the batteries with the energy captured from the brakes. [33]

Hybrid car are popular in these days but the main drawback is that Hybrid are not eco-friendly as it has ICE along with electric motor, battery and several other electrical components. [26] Charging efficiency was defined as the percentage of power drawn from the electric grid that is actually taken up by the vehicle battery. [28] EV (electric vehicle) was very popular and was sold during 1918. [26] Reports appeared in the Wall Street Journal, in trade magazines and in newspapers as far away as New Zealand regarding Ford’s foray into EV (Electric vehicle). [26]

This concept will be more efficient as compared to other electric, ICE and Hybrid vehicles. [26]

Divide your electric vehicle?s battery pack rating by whichever number is lower: the vehicle?s acceptance rate, or the EV charging station?s output rate. [28] In this range are the VW e-Golf, Fiat 500e, Chevrolet Bolt EV, Chevy Volt, Toyota Prius Plug-in and Ford Focus electric. [33]

You may have noticed a trend here – all five of the best-selling used cars are either hybrid or fully electric, despite the strong demand for new SUVs and trucks and slow sales of electrified models on the new car market. [31] In this car we will be using two electric motors (M1 and M2, say), and two rechargeable batteries (B1 and B2 say). [26]

On a $22,000 car, your cost with the 0% and bonus would be $21,000, with a payment of $291/month. [32] We deliver up-to-date car values, expert reviews and unbiased reporting at no cost to you. [33]

Level 1 home charging simply won?t work for anyone who drives long distances regularly and doesn?t have the time or opportunity to recharge their car during the day. [28] One advantage of the longer range cars is that they should seldom use all their charge in a single day?s commute. [28] Tesla released its first car named as Tesla Road star in 2008. [26] When I first go the car I would get stopped all the time to talk about it and whenever anyone new gets in it they always comment on the quiet. [29] Of course, these numbers are only valid in a new car as there probably will be some degradation of capacity over time. [28]

The 2018 Chevy Sonic is a compact car available in either sedan or hatchback models. [30] If you ask me, the flying cars of the year 2077 won?t run on diesel, that much is clear. [30] With zero percent interest loans and other incentives now starting to fall by the wayside because of higher federal interest rates and the escalating trade dispute, new car sales prospects are not looking up in the long term. [27] If you?re not convinced by now that cars like the Chevy Bolt are the future of the automotive industry, then we?ll have to agree to disagree. [30] We will replace ICE with Motor generator concept which will help in propulsion of car. [26] To overcome the above issues mass production of the ICE powered cars prevailed in the market. [26]

Figure 1: The cross section diagram of the car (energy section). [26] Here we are mainly discussed on the source of energy supply of a car. [26]

A steam engine powered car was used by French army for artillery purposes. [26]

Even factoring in the price of electricity, if you only own an electric vehicle for half the time it will last, the savings should more than make up for the difference in cost. [30] The i3?s open-space interior concept also separates it from the pack, as does its nearly $45,500 entry-level price tag, which gets you a pure electric vehicle with a range of about 114 miles on a full charge. [33] A full charge to the Bolt?s battery is enough to take you up to 238 miles, finally bridging the gap in range that previous electric vehicles haven?t been able to. [30] Pure battery electric vehicles (BEV) can take quite a while to charge if empty; plug in hybrids can recover their electric range more quickly. [28]

The i3 holds average resale values, better than the Fiat 500e, Ford Focus Electric and Nissan Leaf and on par with the Volkswagen e-Golf and Audi Sportback e-Tron hybrid. [33] Sporty, quick and quirky the technically advanced 2018 BMW i3 and new i3s are offered as electrics or as plug-in hybrids for extended range. [33] BMW offers both the 2018 BMW i3 and the new more powerful i3s as pure electrics or as plug-in hybrids with extended range. [33]

Like the i3, it?s available as a pure electric or as a plug-in hybrid. [33]

Sometime between 1832 and 1839, Robert Anderson of Scotland invented the first electric carriage. [26] If the Chevy Bolt is the first electric vehicle you?ve glanced at in recent years then you may be in for a nice surprise. [30] Even if you think the technology needs more refinement before you?re willing to hop on board, there?s no denying the progress electric vehicles have made in the last few years alone, and what that spells for the rest of the industry. [30]

At these prices, the i3 resides in a middle ground among electric vehicles. [33] Add the range extender, which is a small 2-cylinder gas engine with a 2.4-gallon fuel tank, and the price goes up to over $49,000. [33] The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the 2018 BMW i3 starts at around $45,500 and with the Range Extender, $49,300. [33]

A used late-model i3 usually sells for $23,964 on average compared to a new model that costs an average of $53,503. [31] With ranges that top 200 miles and average daily commutes of less than 40 miles, it should only be a matter of topping off the battery at night, which can typically be done in a couple hours. [28] Thanks to math done by people with degrees, we know that the average American spends somewhere near $2000 on gas every year. [30] In second place is the Tesla Model S, spending an average of 32.4 days on used car dealer lots. [31] Topping the list is the Toyota Prius C, which only stays on the used car market for an average of 29.6 days. [31]

The climate change and increase in the average temperature of the earth mainly due to the CO 2 emissions and the concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere is increasing day by day. [26]

On average, Level 2 charging was 5.6% more efficient than Level 1 (89.4% vs. 83.8%). [28]

In this study we examined the charging efficiency of Level 1 (120 Volt) and Level 2 (240 Volt) Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). [28] The 2018 BMW i3 electric vehicle uses an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery back. [33] Electric vehicles have battery packs in varying sizes; the battery pack size determines the amount of energy stored in the vehicle. [28] Gustafsson T, Johansson A (2015) Comparison between battery electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles fueled by electro fuels. [26] Many electric vehicle owners will likely find that they typically don’t deplete more of the battery than can be replenished overnight using a basic 120V connection. [28]

In order to charge an electric vehicle a charging station must be used. [28] The running electric vehicle could not able to generate any kind of energy by itself, but this mechanism will be generating electrical energy by itself but external loads or external force would not be very much effected to it, it has been proved by the above graphs. [26] The i3 electric vehicle uses a single-speed transmission and is rear-wheel drive. [33] The HCS-60 may have more power than what would be needed for a vehicle you purchase today, but it will have the extra power available for an electric vehicle you may purchase in the future. [28]

The slowest-selling late-model used car is the Porsche Cayenne, which typically stays on the market for 67.8 days before being sold. [31] Rounding off the top five fastest-selling used cars is the Toyota Prius (33.4 days) and Chevrolet Volt (34.3 days). [31]

For the record, my wife and I have been driving our Chevy Bolt EV for over a year now, and neither of us can imagine buying a new car that is not electric. [34] Tesla offers 24/7 roadside assistance for the first four years or the first 50,000 miles for cars covered by the new vehicle limited warranty. [36]
