The national average installed cost of a 6-kW system is $13,278, or $2.21 per watt, after applying the 30 percent federal tax credit, according to EnergySage, a Boston-based service that links homeowners with solar system providers across the country. For this piece, we’re using the national average (at the time of writing) $2.83 per gallon of regular gas from the EIA. For the bigger picture of what it costs to charge a plug-in car, you should include the amortized cost of buying and installing a home charging station. [2] For plug-in cars with larger batteries, Level 2 is your best bet for overnight charging and quick top-ups. [2]

There are two parts to the efficiency advantage that EVs have over gas cars. [4]

The federal government offers EV buyers a one-time $7,500 tax credit, which effectively cuts the $37,495 Chevrolet Bolt EV’s base sticker price to $29,995. [3] Taking the one-time $7,500 federal tax credit effectively reduces the Leaf’s original sticker price to $26,112. [3]

Part 1 is that electric motors are much more efficient at converting electricity into motion than gasoline engines that convert much of the energy into heat, vibration, and sound. [4]

They will remain at least in some niche markets like off-road vehicles operating in off-grid areas (where there is no electric power to charge the car), areas with very cold climate (where using electric heating would drain the battery too quickly) or as cars built in a more traditional style for some purists like muscle cars. Even if you set aside other market forces that could stop people from switching to an all-electric car (spotty charging infrastructure, range anxiety), the focus on EVs as luxury vehicles means this potential relief is still theoretical. [6] In the world’s largest car market, Raftery notes that ” China has passed a law which requires any vehicle maker to obtain a new energy vehicle score of at least 10% by 2019, which rises to 12% by 2020, and on up to 20% of sales by 2025. [11]

Battery technology still makes up a large part of the price of an all-electric car, and the market forces — material costs, overall supply — aren?t helping to quickly bring costs down. [6] Now, reduce that EV sticker price by 75-50% of whatever you?ve been shelled out in the last year to keep your current car going and multiply it again by the 5-10 years you plan to own the car. [39] That won?t come for a few years, though; instead, much like Tesla is doing by holding back the cheapest version of the Model 3, Lucid plans to sell a more expensive (and therefore higher-margin) spec of the car at the outset to help fund its efforts going forward. [6]

According to studies done by several government and industry engineering bodies all this breaks down the maintenance costs of an EV to between 75% and 50% less than a comparable ICE car. [39] Add to that their resale value is higher and will continue to distance itself from ICE, as people become less likely to buy a car with an ICE, since its resale value will continue to fall as the EV revolution advances. [11] With an EV, you?ll never need an oil change, spark plug replacement or emission test, among the many regular checks ICE drivers have to do to keep their car in top running order. [39]

And, there’s even a “growing list of cities that are passing legislation to ban diesel engined vehicles from driving on their streets ” further encouraging the uptake of clean cars. [11] Cost of ownership is what you have to pay to keep that new car fueled and roadworthy during the time you own it. [39] Assuming that you have a working donor car and you are NOT restoring or repairing anything, Chinese parts will cost you around USD$2000 WITHOUT batteries. [13] Pricing hasn?t been announced, but both cars should cost around $100,000. (The powertrain platform that the Taycan is being built on will also be shared with Audi for an even more expensive performance version of the E-tron, due out in 2020.) [6]

It released the hybrid i8 sports car in 2014, and it has made the all-electric i3 (which tops out at just around 150 miles of range in its latest configuration ) for basically just as long. [6] You can expect the range to diminish by 20%, something which will never happen in an ICE car with a fuel tank. [7]

Major car manufacturers Toyota (NYSE: TM ), Nissan ( OTCPK:NSANY ), and Honda (NYSE: HMC ) will phase out conventional vehicles within the next three decades in favor of electric vehicles. [40] Electric Vehicles bring with them a different set of mechanical problems and issues which could potentially appear when the car reaches a certain age. [7]

According to Raftery, “Electric vehicles are typically significantly cheaper to fuel as well (unless you happen to live somewhere that has particularly cheap petrol and extremely expensive electricity). [11] This is good news to one group, though: automakers launching new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. [8]

The price of electric per unit energy is similar to that of gasoline. [11] The short-range version is a bit of a compromise at under 200 miles, but the long-range Kona Electric beats out most of the competition (save for the most expensive Teslas) with an EPA-rated 253 miles per charge. [6] We desperately need a decent electric pick-up and mid-size electric SUV with 300+ mile range, both priced around $50K. [11] Chinese startup NIO, which recently went public in the U.S., plans to sell its electric SUVs outside of China, though its first one costs the equivalent of about $70,000 right now. [6] Officially unveiled earlier this year, the $69,500 five-seater electric SUV will start making it to customers this fall. [6] In the second quarter this year, Bloomberg reports 411,000 electrics delivered, 77 percent more than the same period last year. [8]

Bloomberg points out that as gas prices are rising, the total number of plug-in hybrid and battery-electric models on sale around the world is set to rise a full 20 percent to 216 different vehicles in the next year. [8] If you have to put less energy into the vehicle, at the same price per unit, that still makes it cheaper to fuel. [11]

Consumers will pivot from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles based on cost vs. price considerations. [40] Despite the fall in commodity prices at this moment, prices for battery metals should correct to the upside given the longer term perspective on the electric vehicle trend. [40]

That implies you can have double the range for half the price in the same battery mass(weight) in around 10 years. [11]

Porsche aims to launch its first fully-electric sports car next year when a new Taycan is introduced. [11] The more expensive the car is new, the more it?s going to depreciate after just a couple of months or years. [7]

Therefore, to travel 10,000 km annually (considered the norm in Canada) an EV owner will spend about $200 to power his or her car. [39] Continuing the luxury EV trend, Mercedes finally made a serious splash in the world of all-electric cars when it announced the EQC in early September. [6]

Tesla, too, will offer a $35,000 spec of its cheapest car in 2019: the Model 3. [6] Tesla is forcing car manufacturers to build EV’s because EV’s are what the consumer wants. [11]

While ICE cars contain hundreds of moving parts susceptible to the normal wear and tear of driving, most EVs have fewer than a dozen. [39] What?s more, the regenerative braking of EVs mean that the chance of ever needing a brake job during the entire ownership of the car is more than remote. [39]

The dream of cars powered by electricity is finally becoming a reality. [6] While that certainly proves it’s possible, it ignores the reality that an oversized battery pack is currently too expensive to be put into a mainstream car. [11] I respectfully disagree, a car like the Chevy Volt was possible even in the 70s with NiCad batteries. [11] If youre in the U.S. I think most, if not all states have exceptions for home built cars. [13] The new all-electric car closest to hitting the road in the U.S. is the Jaguar I-Pace. [6]

While your car is just sitting there, it will take off automatically and be used for ride sharing paying for itself. [11] Porsche plans to stop offering diesel versions of its cars. [11] It?s otherwise a very Mercedes car, with a typically premium interior that centers on the company?s sharp-looking MBUX interface, one of the most attractive automaker-provided in-car infotainment systems. [6] By comparison, Canadians driving ICE cars will pay $1,600 to cover that same distance on a regular blend. [39]

As of December2016 update, the Nissan Leaf is the world’s best-selling plug-in car in history with more than 250,000 units delivered, followed by the Tesla Model S with over 158,000 sales, the Volt/Ampera family of vehicles with 134,500 vehicles sold, and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with about 116,500 units sold through November 2016. [12]

A hybrid vehicle such as the Ford Fusion Hybrid depreciates an average of $3,301 per year. [7] This is driving up gasoline prices at the pump, with the average across the USA almost breaching $3 per gallon, also for the first time since 2014. [8]

By 2020 the cost of batteries will have fallen 90% in 10 years, and the price will continue to drop.” [11] At the Tesla shareholder meeting on June 5th of this year, Elon Musk stated that Tesla would be at $100 per kWh within 2 years. $100 per kWh is widely agreed to be the figure where EVs and ICE vehicles will have a comparable upfront purchase price. [11]

Electricity price is $0.125 / KWh factoring in the fixed costs, whether you consume 1 KWh/ month or 1,000 KWh/month you have to pay the fixed cost of $20 $25. [11] Just exclude this and take the variable cost and the price of electricity will be much lesser. [11]

Lucid Motors, which just struck a $1 billion deal with Saudi Arabia?s sovereign wealth fund, has targeted a price of $60,000 for the base version of its Lucid Air luxury EV, which has lay-back rear seats and a Tesla-style touchscreen dashboard. [6] SF Motors, another company from China with similar ambitions (and backed by Chinese automaker Sokon), will be in a similar price range. [6]

Only a few models will approach the more affordable mid-$30,000 starting price set by GM?s Bolt. [6]

The upfront cost of an electric vehicle can be depreciated over a far longer time lowering the vehicle’s total cost of ownership significantly EVs will just keep on working. In Canada, the national average cost of the electricity EVs use is 12 cents/kWh while fuel costs run from $1.20 to $1.50 per liter for regular gas, 10 cents/liter more for a premium blend. [39] A standard Internal Combustion Engine sedan such as the Chevrolet Cruze depreciates an average of $2,114 per year. [7] I believe I was told that the interest rate would be about 3.3% but the sales person told me that the average could be 5%. [42]

You should factor in the high cost of depreciation when considering how much an electric vehicle will save you in yearly running costs, but for some, the pros may outweigh the cons. [7] Just a quick glance at the range of today’s electric vehicles show this trend clearly — if others continue to follow the leader (aka Tesla), range should continue to steadily improve. [11] When electric vehicles have a range of 1,000km, it is the ICE vehicles which start to have a range problem.” [11]

Global charging infrastructure to grow in tandem with electric vehicle production. [40] Here are the latest developments in the electric vehicle and battery metals markets. [40] The electric vehicle battery industry is moving towards an 80% nickel battery chemistry. [40] As an electric vehicle reaches the end of its battery life cycle, its value will drop substantially because the new owner is aware he?ll have to replace it relatively soon. [7]

It’s reported that “Contrary to what many believe, the batteries in electric vehicles don’t degrade over time (or over miles/kilometers driven either). [11] Electric vehicle demand will impact copper positively as electric vehicles require four to five times for copper. [40]

Choosing an electric vehicle is a great choice if you want to cut your oil use and still have an exceptional driving experience. [7] Cities are adopting or trying out electric vehicles first in public transportation. [40] Electric vehicles usually have robust 10-year warranties for their batteries, but there?s at least a fear that buying a used electric vehicle could mean buying something that will be quickly obsolete. [7] Markedly, there?s the Internal Revenue Service tax credit of up to $7,500 for the purchase of a new electric vehicle. [7]

It should be easier and cheaper to replace your old car’s battery in 10 years, than it is now (if battery costs keep going down). [11] Folks should realize a gas car getting 30mpg, for a more realistic 12k miles all year, pays ~$1,200 (@$3ea). [11] Sitting in traffic the motor doesn’t consume energy when it’s not moving, unlike a gas car. [11]

Once you go EV you aint goin back is another plus and the collapse of the used car market is going to be the LARGEST factor in accelerating the move to EV’s. [11]

Even considering the purchase rebates and Scrap-it potential a new EV buyer has to lower the price, it’s still hard for many to get their heads around all the changes owning an EV offers. [39] That?s not a lot of money if you compare it to the $100,000 Model S, but it?s still a considerable amount considering that for the same price you can get a fully decked-out 2018 Ford Focus, an Accord, or even something like a V6 Camaro. [7] The ban on manufacturing ICE vehicles won’t happen in most countries until at least 2040, which means people who buy new and used ICE vehicles in 2039 will need assurances that gasoline will be available at reasonable prices until at least 2050. [11] There will be a lot of used ICE vehicles at reasonable prices for decades. [11]

Compared to the future prices of wind and solar, all hydrocarbon fuels are too expensive. [11] Nickel price is still very cheap compared to other battery metals such as cobalt and lithium. [40] All of this is ticking oil prices toward $100 per barrel, the highest price since 2014. [8]

That tax credit functions kind of like a consumer rebate, discounting the sticker price. [6]

“But, car owners that like to change vehicles frequently should be thinking about the resale value – not just the purchase price – when choosing their next ride.” [20] Buyers often only give priority to purchase price and monthly payment when choosing a new car, sometimes selecting a vehicle based on the best deal available. The Nissan Leaf is a stylish, zero-emissions way to commute without sacrificing tech, waiting for years, or spending luxury car money. [10] Toyota Prius, the most economical car of its generation, pushed its EPA-estimate to an amazing 56 mpg in the Eco trim that year. [17]

Here?s where things got tricky: My attempts to charge a Bolt in New York City ate the better part of a single day and proved to be pretty maddening, but the car wasn?t at fault for that. [16] VW?s new EV architecture is scalable and adaptable enough to produce anything from sports cars to cargo vans. [10] With two seats, a high sticker price and a range that is still somewhat limited, Tesla?s sports car isn?t a mainstream solution to high-emissions motoring. [21] As consumers, Americans can, and frequently do, purchase solar panels, energy efficient appliances, and fuel-efficient cars without any government mandate to do so. [9] Like all General Motors cars it can be had with unlimited 4G LTE WiFi, and the speeds are excellent. [16] Like all new Formula E cars, Audi’s latest incorporates some important changes. [10] With options like that sweet roof rack, our car came to $43,905. [16]

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is rather unconventional and controversial but has amassed a huge following for his radical ideas, high-tech cars, and large Supercharging network. [21] A Tesla semi truck is also being developed along with the Hyperloop, and the Boring Company is digging a series of underground tunnels that will transport cars on sleds to their destinations. [21]

Thanks to Tesla’s over-the-air updates, the Model 3 is always improving, and can be reconfigured according to your needs and wants even after you buy the car. [10] It has enough juice that you can pass and dart between other cars when you need to with ease, and it?s small enough that it?s remarkably easy to park. [16] It?s quiet, smooth, and luxury car cozy, but with a handling prowess absent from most battery-powered cars currently on the market. [10]

I ended up stashing it overnight at another garage near the grocery store, and–lo and behold–when I returned the next morning the car had a near-full battery. [16] “Keep your car for a long time and keep it well-maintained or even consider buying a quality, pre-owned vehicle.” [20] The White House has published a policy initiative that outlines how it plans to promote the development of self-driving cars. [10] The Bolt doesn?t have the intense, almost scary acceleration that car has. [16] With the bland seats, the econo-hatch looks and the decidedly not premium interior, the Bolt is not a mid-$40,000 car. [16] Practicality and affordability are just two elements of a good car though, but thankfully, the Bolt has much more up its sleeve. [10]

While electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are still a tiny fraction of global sales, growth rates have been spectacular. [15] More than 200 electric and plug-in model launches are already scheduled globally over the next three years. [14] Tricks learned from the Bolt EV allow you to regain some electric range while driving – a novel skill that comes in handy. [10] While we prefer the more expensive Model 3, if you won’t be able to your hands on a Model 3 for a while (and need an electric commuter ASAP), the Bolt is a fantastic alternative. [10]

Lithium-ion batteries, which claim 40 percent of an electric car’s value, face global cobalt and nickel shortages that will pull the other way, inflating costs as production volumes rise. [14] For companies preparing to bring a record number of electric and hybrid models to market in 2019, oil’s rally could turbocharge demand. [15] Volkswagen has said the ID hatchback, due to open the brand’s electric onslaught next year, will be priced close to conventionally powered versions of the Golf compact. [14] The Model S electric sedan has been a hit since day one, and the new Model 3 takes everything people love about the Model S and puts it into a more affordable package. [21] Mercedes also says the EQC electric SUV will be priced close to its GLC cousin to tackle Tesla’s $49,000 Model 3. [14]

It?s not just the electric powertrain the i3 features an advanced carbon fiber-reinforced plastic body shell, wheels that look like pizza cutters, and an interior trimmed in a plant-based material called kenaf. [10] Why should you buy this? It’s fast and luxurious like a Jag should be (and electric). [10]

BMW’s Mini unit also plans to release the much-anticipated Mini Electric hatchback. [15]

Peninsula Clean Energy offers electric vehicle rates that mirror PG&E’s rates, at a 5% lower cost. [43] Fuel prices reached a four-year high last month, concentrating consumers’ minds on the relative costs of internal combustion versus electric motors. [15] Below are the prices and sites where electric vehicle owners can quickly charge their vehicles. [44] “VW is about to launch a load of electric vehicles at the same price as gasolines, and therefore at a loss,” said Laurent Petizon, a managing director at consulting firm AlixPartners. [14]

In the second quarter, deliveries increased by 77 percent year-on-year to 411,000 vehicles worldwide, according to Bloomberg NEF. Even before the latest rally in oil prices, that was forecast to rise a further 49 percent by the same quarter next year. [15] French rival PSA will price its new rechargeable hybrids to match diesel leasing rates, program director Olivier Salvat told reporters on a recent factory visit – adding that the carmaker aimed to avoid losing money on each vehicle sold. [14] A safe, reliable vehicle can be found at an attractive price point. [20]

On the other end of the spectrum, luxury EVs like the Tesla Model S could top 300 miles between charges, but their price tags made them an unrealistic option for most. [10] Over on the used market, that price for models from the last three years came way down. [17] In the U.S., average gasoline prices are on the verge of breaching $3 a gallon for the first time since 2014. [15] Average transaction prices for the Prius ($18,565) weren’t that low, either. [17]

On average, this BMW plug-in left the lot in 33 days, or 13 days faster than the typical vehicle. [17] AAA?s Your Driving Costs found the average cost to own and operate a new vehicle in 2018 is $8,849 per year. [20]

The BMW i3 is about as different from other cars as can be. [10] While that’s below the six-figure average for a new model, that’s still a hefty sum for a used car. [17] On average, Volt sold for $19,481 through the first seven months of the year, and it only lasted 34.3 days on the market. [17] Prius C sold in an average of 29.6 days 17 days faster than the average and 38 days better than the slowest on the used market. [17]

If fully implemented, the average standard will eventually rise to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. [9] These regulations, known as the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, were implemented in 1975 following the 1973-74 Arab Oil Embargo. [9] It?s a quasi-crossover hatchback thing, taller than your average hatch but not as huge as a true SUV, though it is surprisingly roomy inside. [16]

Early signs suggest electric-car prices may fall sooner and faster than production costs, as carmakers adjust for stalled emissions progress and weak consumer appetite. [14] When that cost gap is reflected in the price, few are sold. [14]

Crude oil has jumped 27 percent this year to more than $85 a barrel and major traders predict prices could reach $100 this winter as U.S. sanction of Iranian exports strain global supply. [15] All of that is before the $7,500 EV tax credit, which would bring its “true” price to $36,405. [16] We examine the qualities of the exterior and interior and judge them based on our expertise and experience in the context of the vehicle?s category and price range. [10] We live in the real world though, and with a starting price of $84,300, the fact remains that many people simply can?t afford to drive a Tesla. [10] Slow down – When gas prices are high, small changes in the way you drive can make a big difference.
