Digital technologies are not new, but in a break with the third industrial revolution, they are becoming more sophisticated and integrated and are, as a result, transforming societies and the global economy. [12] According to the World Economic Forum Global Risks Report 2017, "the Fourth Industrial Revolution has the potential to raise income levels and improve the quality of life for all people. [13] While the digital revolution means that more than 3 billion people now have access to the Internet, that still leaves more than 4 billion out of a core aspect of the third industrial revolution. [13] The Third Industrial Revolution, or the Digital Revolution, refers to the advancement of technology from analog electronic and mechanical devices to the digital technology available today. [12] Just like electricity and petroleum followed coal and water power to become drivers of the Second Industrial Revolution, the Third Industrial Revolution, which began in the '80s, was driven by electronics, a "smart derivative" of electricity. [14] The First Industrial Revolution, which spanned the second half of the 18th and the first half of the 19th centuries, occurred by the harnessing of energy (from coal and water power) to replace human or animal labor. [14]

In addition to the need, the convergence of technologies will power the coming Fifth Industrial Revolution. [14] The Second Industrial Revolution took place between 1870 and 1914, just before World War I. 7 It was a period of growth for pre-existing industries and expansion of new ones, such as steel, oil and electricity, and used electric power to create mass production. [12] The Second Industrial Revolution, in the second half of the 19th century and up until World War I was primarily powered by even "smarter power": electricity (e.g. telegraph) and hydrocarbons (e.g. internal combustion engine). [14]

We must help those who missed out on the huge increases in quality of life that the first, second, and third industrial revolutions provided. [13] Just like the first two industrial revolutions drove people out of farms and into factories, there is now the angst of what happens to full employment if artificial intelligence displaces entire categories of workers. [14] While previous industrial revolutions took generations to unfold, the world-changing convergence of wireless connectivity, artificial intelligence, advanced automation, nanotechnology, 3-D manufacturing, biotechnology and big data is happening at unprecedented speed. [11] "We will succeed in taming biology and making it into a more predictable science that can be harnessed, similar to the way the previous four industrial revolutions harnessed the physical and mechanical sciences." [14] The lessons of previous industrial revolutions include the realization that technology and its wealth generation can serve the interests of small, powerful groups above the rest. [13] Many people around the world haven?t yet benefited from previous industrial revolutions. [13] As in past industrial revolutions, it can also be a disruptive force, dislocating people from jobs and surfacing questions about the relationship between humans and machines. [13] As the Fifth Industrial revolution unfolds, the pace of human development will accelerate. [14]

Industrial revolutions occur when there is an unmet need and when different technologies come together to create magic. [14] The First Industrial Revolution took place from the 18th to 19th centuries in Europe and America. [12] The Fifth Industrial Revolution will be powered by the coming acceleration in harnessing the biological sciences. [14] "The Fourth Industrial Revolution: what it means, how to respond". [12] "The Fourth Industrial Revolution can compromise humanity's traditional sources of meaning--work, community, family, and identity--or it can lift humanity into a new collective and moral consciousness based on a sense of shared destiny. Specifically this industrial revolution is evolving at an exponential and disruptive pace unlike the previous ones. [2] New industrial revolutions begin even as previous industrial revolutions are continuing. [14]

While internet is part of an industrial revolution, health care has been waiting for its turn. [14] Around one-third of the world?s population (2.4 billion) lack clean drinking water and safe sanitation, around one-sixth (1.2 billion) have no electricity--both systems developed in the second industrial revolution. [13]

Building on the widespread availability of digital technologies that were the result of the Third Industrial, or Digital, Revolution, the Fourth Industrial Revolution will be driven largely by the convergence of digital, biological, and physical innovations. [16] Schwab, a year earlier, had put it this way: There is an "inexorable shift from simple digitization (the Third Industrial Revolution) to innovation based on combinations of technologies (the Fourth Industrial Revolution)." [17]

Emerging Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies are rapidly changing how people, business, society and nations interact. [18] Our responsibilities to one another, our opportunities for self-realization, and our ability to positively impact the world are intricately tied to and shaped by how we engage with the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. [16] It?s important to appreciate that the Fourth Industrial Revolution involves a systemic change across many sectors and aspects of human life: the crosscutting impacts of emerging technologies are even more important than the exciting capabilities they represent. [16] What is often less appreciated, however, is the role liberal arts will play in this Fourth Industrial Revolution. ? Growing calls to bridge AI with human ingenuity suggest that our education systems will need to focus on teaching skills that will augment and complement AI to meet the impact of machine automation." [19] By recognizing the risks, whether cybersecurity threats, misinformation on a massive scale through digital media, potential unemployment, or increasing social and income inequality, we can take the steps to align common human values with our technological progress and ensure that the Fourth Industrial Revolution benefits human beings first and foremost. [16]

Overlooked are adult learners, who could become the fourth industrial revolution?s first generation of leaders--or a lost generation. [20] Their report says, "Simply increasing the number of STEM graduates within the framework of currently existing education systems is not a silver bullet for mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution." [21] Globally, the planet is not only now entering and rapidly advancing through the third industrial revolution, but we are moving beyond this and starting to experience both a confluence and convergence of emerging technologies, as we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution. [22] Those companies that can break down the walls to become more relevant to their customers lives by enabling and providing end-to-end and last-mile connectivity, combined with the platforms and integrated "glue" required to enable the convergence of the emerging technologies of the fourth industrial revolution, will be best positioned to scale and remain contextually relevant at the center of customers' attention. [22]

China 2025 specifically targets 10 sectors that are supposed to form part of the so called fourth industrial revolution; information technology, high-end machinery and robotics, aerospace, marine equipment and ships, advanced rail transport, new-energy vehicles, electric power, agricultural machinery, new materials, and bio-medical. [23] This fourth industrial revolution is now building on the third - the digital revolution that has been occurring since the middle of the last century. [22] The Fourth Industrial Revolution heralds a series of social, political, cultural, and economic upheavals that will unfold over the 21st century. [16] It?s impossible to fully understand how the Fourth Industrial Revolution will affect our global economy, the business environment, and individual enterprises. [21] The Fourth Industrial Revolution will challenge our ideas, change our norms, and redefine our standards. [21] The challenges created by the fourth industrial revolution appear to be mostly on the supply side, in the world of work and production. [22] When compared with the previous industrial revolutions, the fourth is evolving at an exponential, rather than a linear pace. [20] The First Industrial Revolution brought mechanical innovation--steam engines, cotton spinning, railroads. [21] The 4 th Industrial Revolution will be dominated by companies with the flexibility to adapt to forthcoming technological innovation that is well beyond our current comprehension. [3] There are three reasons why today's transformations do not merely represent an extension of the third industrial revolution, but the arrival of a distinct one: velocity, scope (breadth and depth), and systems impact. [22] All previous industrial revolutions have had both positive and negative impacts on different stakeholders. [16] As we look back at history, previous industrial revolutions were defined by certain characteristics. [22]

The Internet has provided a shift to decentralized and distributed computing from the centralized computing model that started in the third industrial revolution. [22] The second industrial revolution used electric power to create mass production. [22] A brief look at historical data reveals that all prior industrial revolutions have in fact been good to the human race. [24] We know the 4 th Industrial Revolution is upon us with tremendous growth potential. [3]

The first revolution at the end of the 18 th century was sparked by the harnessing of steam as an industrial power force. [25] During the third revolution, the U.S. began to cede its lead manufacturer role to China as the latter invested in industrial production and education and eased restrictive trade policies. [26] The second revolution erupted almost exactly one hundred years later with the industrial harnessing of electricity, which powered the mass production lines. [25] We noted another trend triggered and fueled by this revolution in industrial intelligence, reshoring. [25]

The extraordinary pace of technological change in the so-called "fourth industrial revolution"--well-articulated by Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum--holds tremendous promise. [27] Klaus Schwab, executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, believes this about the Fourth Industrial Revolution: "We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work and relate to one another. [28] At the 2016 Davos Forum, Klaus Schwab, the president of the World Economic Forum (WEF), mentioned the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a disruptive innovation. [4] The occurrence of a Fourth Industrial Revolution or "Industry 4.0" has been discussed and debated for a number of years now, gaining prominence and momentum at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2016. [29]

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is defined as a technological revolution that fuses digital technology based on the Third Industrial Revolution, and physical and biological fields. [4] Jang ( 2016 ) concretely suggested 10 advanced technologies and 23 megatrends, and divided them into physical, digital, and biological categories, which are the three core fusion technology fields of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. [4] The reason is that, as the Fourth Industrial Revolution leads disruptive innovation, the technologies you have or developed need to be open to fusing with the digital, physical, or biotechnology fields. [4] The Fourth Industrial Revolution is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres. [5] I have already mentioned at the end of the Chapter 2 that as the Fourth Industrial Revolution leads the Disruptive Innovation, the need of openness by convergence of digital, physical, biological fields is necessary. [4] The fourth industrial revolution focuses on artificial intelligence, big data, the internet of things and other emerging technologies that fuse the physical, digital and biological worlds. [26] They must learn to embrace the "Fourth Industrial Revolution" and the technologies driving it: the internet of things, work-from-anywhere, cybersecurity, and digital markets.
