Gisin, of the University of Geneva, debates the physical reality of real numbers: Do they appropriately represent nature? Physicists regularly use real numbers to describe the world: velocities, positions, temperatures, energies. [1] REALLY REAL The mathematical ideal of real numbers might not appropriately represent the reality of the real world, says physicist Nicolas Gisin. [1]

We realize that physicists pioneered the pivotal discoveries of the 20th century which revolutionized the world (e.g. the transistor, the laser, splitting the atom, TV and radio, MRI and PET scans, quantum theory and relativity, unraveling the DNA molecule was done by physicists. [2] The median pay for physicists is over $105,000 per year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, making it one of the highest paying fields in the modern world. [3] Theoretical physicists use mathematical concepts to analyze and predict the behavior of the physical world. [4]

In a new book entitled “Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Astray,” Hossenfelder argues that many physicists working today have been led astray by mathematics — seduced by equations that might be “beautiful” or “elegant” but which lack obvious connection to the real world. [5] “Bohr’s view of quantum mechanics was essentially totally accepted throughout the world by thousands of physicists doing it every day,” said Misner, who was also in Copenhagen at the time. [6] This kind of motivation lay behind several great atomic physicists going into biology after the second world war, to work on “life rather than death”. [7] There aren’t all that many places in the world that hire theoretical physicists, and still fewer with jobs open. [7]

Though not all physicists agree with the many worlds interpretation, there have been informal, unscientific polls which have supported the idea that it is one of the dominant interpretations believed by physicists, likely ranking just behind the Copenhagen interpretation and decoherence. [8] That?s weird but it is a small price to pay, say quantum physicists, for the sanity the many worlds interpretation brings to the otherwise crazy notion of quantum mechanics. [9] Michael Nielsen wrote a 2004 blog post (at a website which no longer exists) which indicates – guardedly – that the many worlds interpretation is not only accepted by many physicists, but that it was also the most strongly disliked quantum physics interpretation. [8] The reason many physicists love the many worlds idea is that it explains away all the strange paradoxes of quantum mechanics. [9]

A number of physicists report, however, that they miss being physicists. [4] One number above all others has exercised an enduring fascination for physicists: 137.03599913. [10] Physicists and cosmologists have long wondered where these numbers, 1/137.03599913 and 10 40, come from. [10] The number of nuclear physicists produced by U.S. universities has been declining by 3 percent per year for the past decade, dropping to 66 nuclear physicists in 2003, said Hartouni, the leader of the Lab?s nuclear and particle physics division. [11]

The graduate programs in the Physics Department at the University of Maryland have been ranked number 14 by U.S. News & World Report. [12] Of this number, five are ranked among the world?s top 100 for physics and astronomy: the University of Tokyo (31 st in the world rankings), Kyoto University (36 th in the world rankings), the Tokyo Institute of Technology (68 th in the world rankings), Tohoku University (71 st in the world rankings) and Osaka University (55 th in the world rankings). [13]

Since that time, a number of significant contributions have been made by members of the physics department including: one of the world centers of molecular and atomic theory, the application of mass spectrometers to determine nuclear constants, the discovery that the proton has an excited state, and the construction of the Fermi National Accelerator. [12]

The average number of nuclear physicists produced annually during the past decade has been 84. [11]

Growing numbers of physicists work in interdisciplinary fields, such as biophysics, chemical physics, and geophysics. [14] Even if there were a lot fewer physicists applying for the same number of jobs, it’s still not certain that there’s a job where you want to live, specifically. [7]

If the world is described by numbers that have randomness baked into them, as Gisin suggests, that would knock classical physics from its deterministic perch. [1] “Weird Math? aims to connect numbers and equations to the real world. [1]

You can become a physicist by studying any one of a number of different fields of physics. The predictions from their theory become close to conventional quantum mechanics as the number of worlds tends to infinity. [18] They say that as the number of worlds becomes larger, the results become closer to that predicted by quantum mechanics. [18] “The orthodox quantum probabilities will then be approximately proportional to the number of worlds in each class,” say Hall and co. [18] The key is in the number of worlds that actually make up the universe or multiverse. [18]

[20] In order to investigate this question, I gathered data on 3 indicators of the growth of science: the number of PhD?s granted per year, the number of patents issued, and the number of papers published. According to an article from Physics Today, there is a range between 372,000 and 964,000 based on national physics society membership from the 34 most populous counties and adjusting for the estimated total world population. [21] Never before have we had so many people whose sole purpose of work is to better understand how the world works. [20]

Im not interested in becoming a theoretical physicist, that would be ridiculous, but I am curious to know how many TP are there, how many PHD degrees are awarded each year, how many applicants are there for a PHD per year and how many applicants are there for a masters in theoretical physicists versus how many are accepted. [22]

A physicist is a scientist who specializes in the field of physics, which encompasses the interactions of matter and energy at all length and time scales in the physical universe. 1 2 Physicists generally are interested in the root or ultimate causes of phenomena, and usually frame their understanding in mathematical terms. [23] The highest honor awarded to physicists is the Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded since 1901 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. 12 National physics professional societies have many prizes and awards for professional recognition. [23] The South African Institute of Physics delivers a certification of Professional Physicists (Pr.Phys). [23] Chartered Physicist (CPhys) is a chartered status and a professional qualification awarded by the Institute of Physics. [23]

The Physics Honor Society (Sigma Pi Sigma) offers many examples of ” hidden physicists “–physics grads doing non-physics jobs. [24] If you cannot talk to a real physicist, read biographies of the giants of physics, to understand their motivation, their career path, the milestones in their career.) [2] Studying physics doesn’t mean you have to be a physicist. [24] Holt a physicist who served for 16 years as a Democrat in the House of Representatives has been one of many voices to speak up for the value and integrity of science following the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president. [25] Within ten years, the Sputnik-generation will finally retire, hopefully opening up new jobs for young, talented physicists. [2] That role has been held for the last eight years throughout the Obama administration by respected physicist John Holdren. [25] Former Texas governor Rick Perry, meanwhile, has been nominated to replace physicist Ernest Moniz to head the Department of Energy an organization he once said should be “eliminated”. [25] Many physicists in their seventies decided to stay on, making it difficult to find jobs for young people. [2] Government jobs pay well, but you will never become wealthy being a government physicist. [2] The three major employers of career physicists are academic institutions, laboratories, and private industries, with the largest employer being the last. [23] One of the greatest physicists of all time, Michael Faraday, started out as a penniless, uneducated apprentice, but he was persistent and creative and then went on to revolutionize modern civilization with electric motors and dynamos. [2] I’ve often been asked the question: how do you become a physicist? Let me first say that physicists, from a fairly early age, are fascinated by the universe and its fantastic wonders. [2] Physicists in academia or government labs tend to have titles such as Assistants, Professors, Sr. /Jr. Scientist, or postdocs. [23] As I said, physicists do not become scientists for the money, so I don’t want to downplay the financial problems that you may face. [2] People often ask the question: do I have to be an Einstein to become a physicist? The answer is NO. Sure, physicists have to be proficient in mathematics, but the main thing is to have that curiosity and drive. [2] There are approximately 17100 people employed as a Physicists and Astronomers. [28] There is, though, one event in 2017 that will bring joy to physicists in the U.S. the total solar eclipse that will take place on Monday 21 August. [25] Many physicists contributed to the development of quantum mechanics in the early-to-mid 20th century. [23] The average age of a physicist increases 8 months per year, meaning that there is very little new hiring. [2]

This focus on looks at the physics PhD production in the U.S. It presents trend data on the number of physics PhD awarded in the U.S. including data on citizenship, women, and minorities. [29] The American Institute of Physics says the average number of physics graduates for a bachelor granting institution (like Southeastern) is 6.4 per year. [24]

In the 1960s, because of Sputnik, a tremendous number of university jobs opened up. [2] The average at Southeastern remains less than 6.4, but at least we beat that number this year. [24] You’d get a greater diversity in the explanations offered in those 600-odd papers on the latest statistical fluctuation from CERN, which would probably be a welcome development for people who have to read all of that, but you’d still get a ridiculous number of people jumping on the slightest hint of something that might be actual data. [27]

Doing a science fair project is another way to plunge into the wonderful world of physics. [2] Einstein, who took U.S. citizenship in 1940, also provided the world with its most famous equation, Emc2, which demonstrates the equivalence of mass and energy. [26]

A further five leading physics departments can be found in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, 40 th in the world rankings) in the top 100 and the University of Hong Kong (28 th in the world rankings) at 101-150. [13] You?ll find another eight top universities to study physics in the Netherlands, three of which are in the top 100 worldwide: Delft University of Technology (86 th in the world rankings), Leiden University (75 th in the world rankings) and the University of Amsterdam (50 th in the world rankings). [13] Three of Sweden?s universities make the top 100: KTH, Royal Institute of Technology (110 th in the world rankings), Lund University (60 th in the world rankings) and Stockholm University (182 nd in the world rankings). [13] Finland and Poland both claim five of the world?s top physics universities, and while none are ranked in the top 100, the Finnish University of Helsinki (67 th in the world rankings) makes it into the top 150 and the Polish University of Warsaw (335 th in the world rankings) makes the top 200. [13] Of the 17 Canadian universities featured among the world?s 400 top physics universities, three are within the top 50: the University of Toronto (20 th in the world rankings), the University of British Colombia (43 rd in the world rankings) and McGill University (21 st in the world rankings). [13] The two top physics schools in Singapore – the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU, 39 th in the world rankings) – are both placed in the world?s top 50. [13] 33 of the world?s 400 top physics schools are located in the UK. In addition to the three UK schools in the top 10, the University of Manchester (30 th in the world rankings), UCL (University College London, 5 th in the world rankings) and the University of Edinburgh (17 th in the world rankings) are also in the top 50 worldwide. [13]

Italy also fares well, home to 20 of the world?s best physics schools, including the Sapienza – Universitdi Roma (202 nd in the world rankings) and the Universitdi Pisa (245 th in the world rankings) in the world?s top 50 and four more in the top 100. [13] Nine Spanish schools feature in the physics ranking, with three in the top 100: Universidad Automa de Madrid (178 th in the world rankings), Universitat Automa de Barcelona (173 rd in the world rankings) and Universitat de Barcelona (UB, 166 th in the world rankings). [13] South Korea has one school in the top 50 – Seoul National University (SNU, 31 st in the world rankings) – and one more in the top 100 – KAIST – Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (51 st in the world rankings). [13] Of the seven top universities for physics in Taiwan, National Taiwan University (NTU, 76 th in the world rankings) is the only one within the top 50, while National Tsing Hua University (167 th in the world rankings) ranks 151-200. [13] Israel and Turkey each claim four top universities for physics, including the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (190 th in the world rankings) at 101-150 and Tel Aviv University (195 th in the world rankings) at 151-200. [13] Offering two schools each are the Czech Republic and Norway, including the Czech Technical University in Prague (411-420 in the world rankings) at 101-150 for physics, and the Norwegian University of Bergen (155 th in the world rankings) at 201-250. [13] China offers two in the top 50: Peking University (57 th in the world rankings) and Tsinghua University (47 th in the world rankings). [13] Each with four offerings are Austria and Greece, with their highest entrants being the Austrian Universit Innsbruck (288 th in the world rankings) at 101-150 and the Greek National Technical University of Athens (441-450 in the world rankings) at 251-300. [13] Australian National University is second in Australia at 51-100, while the University of Sydney (37 th in the world rankings) places 101-150. [13] The only African country featured in this subject ranking is South Africa, offering two top physics schools: the University of Cape Town (141 st in the world rankings) at 201-250 and the University of The Witwatersrand (318 th in the world rankings) at 251-300. [13] The top-ranked among these is the Danish University of Copenhagen (45 th in the world rankings) at 51-100, while the Irish Trinity College Dublin (71 st in the world rankings) and University College Dublin (UCD, 139 th in the world rankings) both rank 151-200. [13] Heading over to New Zealand, the University of Auckland (92 nd in the world rankings) ranks at 101-150, the University of Canterbury (242 nd in the world rankings) at 201-250, and the Victoria University of Wellington (275 th in the world rankings) at 301-400. [13] Aside from ETH Zurich in 9 th, Switzerland is also home to Ecole Polytechnique Fale de Lausanne (EPFL, 17 th in the world rankings) in the top 20 and the University of Geneva (85 th in the world rankings) in the top 100. [13] Up next is France with 16 schools featured, including Ecole Polytechnique ParisTech (35 th in the world rankings) and Ecole Normale Supieure, Paris (ENS Paris, 24 th in the world rankings) in the top 50, and two more in the top 100. [13] While none feature in the top 10, five are ranked in the top 50: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit Mchen (52 nd in the world rankings), Technische Universit Mchen (TU Munich, 54 th in the world rankings), Ruprecht-Karls-Universit Heidelberg (49 th in the world rankings), KIT, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (127 th in the world rankings) and Rheinisch-Westfische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen, 147 th in the world rankings). [13] Of the 11 universities in Australia featured in this subject ranking, the leader is the University of Melbourne (33 rd in the world rankings), ranked among the world?s top 50. [13] Bulgaria, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia all have one representative in this ranking, with Lithuania?s Vilnius University (551-600 in the world rankings) and Slovenia?s University of Ljubljana (501-550 in the world rankings) both ranked in the top 300. [13]

The school is also highly ranked by the Academic Ranking of World Universities for its physics program. [3] Harvard is well known for its prestigious Law and Medical programs, but it is also ranked #1 in the world by the Academic Ranking of World Universities for its physics programs. [3] From the Shanghai Rankings, we therefore identified the 50 best programs in the latest 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities in Physics. [12]

Universities were included in the list according to their inclusion in the top 25 ranking of the Academic Ranking of World Universities for Physics. [3] The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015 includes a newly extended ranking of the world?s top universities for physics and astronomy, now featuring the world?s top 400 schools in this subject area. [13] A further five top universities for physics are found in Mexico, including the Universidad Nacional Automa de Mico (UNAM, 175 th in the world rankings) at 101-150. [13] The Universidade de S Paulo (USP, 132 nd in the world rankings) makes the global top 100 for physics, while Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp, 206 th in the world rankings) and Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (271 st in the world rankings) both rank at 101-150. [13] Argentina, with two representatives, boasts one of the region?s strongest universities in this subject: the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA, 198 th in the world rankings) at 51-100. [13] Meanwhile Chile is home to three, including the Pontificia Universidad Catica de Chile (167 th in the world rankings) also at 101-150. [13] Meanwhile Malaysia “s two representatives – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM, 259 th in the world rankings) and Universiti Malaya (UM, 151 st in the world rankings) – both rank 301-400. [13]

Pakistan?s Quaid-i-azam University (unranked in the world rankings) ranks at 251-300, while Thailand?s Chulalongkorn University (243 rd in the world rankings) ranks at 301-400. [13] The Turkish Istanbul Technical University (501-550 in the world rankings) and Middle East Technical University (401-410 in the world rankings) meanwhile, both rank at 251-300. [13]

Many work in traditional areas just like the university physicists, but many branch out into engineering fields and other scientific fields, working with engineers and other scientists in overlapping areas. [4] Because of their broad scientific background, physicists in industry are known for their ability to work in many areas and have helped create many non-traditional fields. [4]

According to the BLS, physicists vie with engineers and computer scientists for high median pay, and many with just undergraduate degrees can still earn the top figures in the field. [3] Physicists agree that there is plenty of room for the field to grow as new discoveries are made concerning nuclear energy, communications, the ocean, and space. [4] Physicists and astronomers study the ways in which various forms of matter and energy interact. [30] Physicists explore the fundamental properties and laws that govern space, time, energy, and matter. [30] Some physicists and astronomers move into managerial positions, typically as a natural sciences manager, and spend a large part of their time preparing budgets and schedules. [30] Many physicists leave the profession at this time because they feel they have “topped out” in their field. [4] As one prominent physicist consoles himself, if you have a degree in physics, you have something very few people have. [4] Although all of physics involves the same fundamental principles, physicists generally specialize in one of many subfields. [30] She and another physicist started keeping an informal count through their website, African American Women in Physics. [31] The conventional interpretation, which is often the first and only one a physicist is taught, may have been the most popular in the survey, but that doesn’t indicate it’s right, says Charles Sebens at the University of California, San Diego. [32] Unification theory suggests that in 100 years physicists will be awash in proton decay data and theorizing over its finer points. [33] In 1934, Swiss physicist Felix Bloch began work at Stanford, bringing passion and achievements with him, including his theory of electron transport and ferromagnetism, the Bethe-Bloch equation, and his invention of spin waves and Bloch walls. [12] Eighty percent of employed physicists work for universities or the government. [4] Across most categories, physicists also tend to specialize in theoretical and experimental work. [4] Some physicists study theoretical areas, such as the fundamental properties of atoms and molecules and the evolution of the universe. [30] Experimental physicists develop new equipment or sensors to study properties of matter, create theories, and test them through experiments. [30] Because of the vast range of subject matter, at the graduate level physicists tend to specialize in one of these categories. [4] Physicists are a dedicated lot, and after having spent upwards of seven years preparing for this career they rarely lose interest so soon. [4] Many physicists work independently on problems, while others work in laboratories as part of teams for the duration of particular projects. [4] One Ivy League physicist complains that fundraising is a necessary evil in his line of work. [4] Without postgraduate degrees, it?s generally difficult to find work as a physicist. [4] That?s part of the message that Ed Hartouni, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, presented today during a four-day national meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas. [11] Luz Martinez-Miranda is the president of the National Society of Hispanic Physicists, another underrepresented group in STEM. Martinez-Miranda, who grew up in Puerto Rico but earned her doctorate from MIT, says she actually felt more supported than some of her Hispanic Americans peers who grew up as minorities in their communities. [31]

Physicists and astronomers need a Ph.D. for most management positions. [30] Some senior astronomers and physicists may be responsible for assigning tasks to other team members and monitoring their progress. [30] Some physicists design and perform experiments with sophisticated equipment such as particle accelerators, electron microscopes, and lasers. [30] “One physicist wrote in the comments that he found the survey a complete and utter waste of time,” says Sivasundaram. [32] One of the roles of physicists and other scientists in the post 9/11 era is to aid in detecting weapons of mass destruction as well as the activities leading up to WMD, according to Hartouni. [11] “It’s what physicists go on believing because it’s the first way they’re introduced to the theory,” he says. [32] Other well-known and recognized physicists associated with the School include Ma Dayou, Yan Jici, Qian Linzhao, Zeng Zepei, Wang Shoujue, Zhang Zone, Li Yinyuan, and Zhang Zongsui. [12] Theoretical and computational physicists develop new theories that can predict properties of materials, or describe unexplained experimental results. [30] Experimental physicists use laboratory experiments to verify these theoretical predictions or develop devices and instruments. [4] Physicists will be able to bring their visual cortices fully to bear on them, and people in general will be able to admire and enjoy them. [33] A recent survey shows that physicists disagree over the picture of reality that quantum mechanics describes – and that many of them don’t even care. [32]

Theoretical physicists and astronomers may study the nature of time or the origin of the universe. [30] If the current downward trend continues, U.S. universities would be producing about 50 nuclear physicists annually by 2010. [11] “Our job is to alert people that there is a diminishing supply and an increasing demand for nuclear physicists. [11]

There are a number of affiliated departments including the Center for Quantum Information Physics, the Center for Microelectronic Materials and Structures, the Institute for Nanoscience and Quantum Engineering, the Sackler Institute, and the Integrated Program in Physical and Engineering Biology. [12] The department engages on campus as well with a number of interdisciplinary programs such as the Biophysics program, the Center for Plasma Theory and Computation, the Fusion Technology Institute, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, the Neuroscience Training Program, and the Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute. [12]

An undergraduate degree in physics can lead to any number of exciting careers, and there are many great undergraduate degree programs to choose from; by choosing from a list that ranks bachelor of physics programs with the best return on investment you will be making sure the money you put in to your education provides you with a secure future in the field of physics. [3] A doctoral degree in physics can open a number of doors in other fields. [4] Latin America is home to 20 of the world?s best physics schools, with almost half of this number located in Brazil. [13]

There have been eight Nobel laureates within the last ten years that have been associated with UPenn, an impressive number. [3] The department also runs a number of public outreach programs. [12] The number of diverging ideas suggests that maybe all of them are off the mark, says Sabine Hossenfelder of Germany’s Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. [32] Very roughly speaking, action is what you get from entropy when you allow time to become an imaginary number. [33] These totals only include U.S. citizens or permanent residents who earned their doctorates in the U.S., not Americans who received a PhD from another country or international students in the U.S. The vast majority–97.9%–earned PhD?s, though a small number earned other kinds of doctorates, like education. [31] The best known example of a pure number comes from combining three of nature’s most fundamental quantities: the speed of light, the electric charge carried by a single electron and Planck’s constant of quantum mechanics. The physics department at Princeton University aims to impart knowledge of the physical universe and train students how to think like a physicist – encompassing intuition, the scientific method, approximation and problem-solving skills. [34] Physics thrives on the rigorous debate of conflicting ideas, and some physicists are concerned that the driving support of string theory, to the exclusion of all other ideas, isn’t healthy for the field. [35] Physicists leave physics for a wide variety of reasons, and many of them are things the field could improve on. I’d expect that number to grow with time post-PhD. While some of these people might still be doing physics, in certain sub-fields that isn’t really an option: it’s not like there are companies that do R&D in particle physics, astrophysics, or string theory. [7] The study of physical science covers a number of science degrees, including mathematics, chemistry and earth science, in addition to the obvious – physics and astronomy. [34] How many depends on how you count things, but for a representative number, this report has 31% of U.S. physics PhDs in the private sector after one year. [7] The low numbers of women in physics, she said, are especially shocking: Women in the United States hold less than 5 percent of full professor positions and make up only 22 percent of the undergraduate majors and 16 percent of the doctoral candidates. [36] The largest numbers of physics faculty hires, exclusively men, were made in the 1960s after Sputnik. [36] Some of the numbers, both small and large, that are bandied around in modern physics are very difficult to grasp. [38]

Obviously, the units used affects these numbers (e.g. meters, kilometers, miles, light years, etc), but I have tried to use consistent metric units throughout: meters for distance, seconds for time, meters/second for speed, degrees Kelvin for temperature, kilograms for mass, kilograms/meter 3 for density, Joules for energy, Coulombs for electrical charge, kilopascals for pressure. [38] About 1,400 undergraduates enrol in a mathematics class every year at Princeton, learning the basics of mathematical proof, calculus and number theory before progressing on to more complex subjects. [34]

Estimate the total number of fundamental particles in the observable universe (other estimates go up to 10 85 ). [38] And, Petersen claimed, this was itself dictated by quantum physics: the mathematics of quantum physics reduced to the mathematics of Newton’s physics once the number of particles involved became large. [6] Quantum physics, Everett pointed out, didn’t really reduce to classical physics for large numbers of particles. [6]

The number of students grad schools accept and graduate is much higher than the number of professor jobs. Gisin — known for his work on the foundations and applications of quantum mechanics — takes issue with real numbers that consist of a never-ending string of digits with no discernable pattern and that can?t be calculated by a computer. [1] Gisin argues March 19 on, only a certain number of digits of real numbers have physical meaning. [1]

It could never be used to describe the world of people and chairs and other objects composed of trillions of trillions of those particles–that world could only be described by the classical physics of Isaac Newton.
