We spoke to 30 of AI?s most knowledgeable scientists and thought leaders about the future of the technology, and most agreed that advances in human-computer interaction (HCI) will be both dependent on AI–and essential to progressing its applications. [14] Accenture has even identified three new types of employment in the future of work: “Explainers,” who will be needed to interpret the output of AI systems; “Sustainers” to optimize their effectiveness; and “Trainers” to feed AI systems? capacity for judgment. With robots increasingly being used to replace the work of humans, what does the future hold? A new report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) looked at the extent to which jobs may soon be automated in 32 different countries and found that 66 million people are at risk of losing their job to machines. [22] If this new model of augmented intelligence and shared responsibility between man and machine terrifies you and threatens what you consider to be the uniquely human capability of decision-making, I’d suggest that you hold on tight because this storm is going to much worse than you thought. [20] The basic philosophy is that we need much more understanding of the animal substrates of human behavior before we can fulfil the dreams of AI in replicating convincing well-rounded intelligence. (Incidentally, the reader should note that the terminology is in chaos, as fields re-group and re-define themselves. [19] The fatal flaw in AI isn’t the technology or its intelligence, it’s something far more difficult to change. [20] “Artificial Intelligence will change the way we do things in a big way. To move beyond the hype and look to the immediate future, 10 Thomson Reuters technologists and innovators make their AI predictions for the year ahead. [16] Although industry studies claim that ~70% of paralegals and a quarter of attorneys will be “impacted” by AI within 10 years, the future is far more nuanced. [23] Many of the experts who responded to this survey expect technology to evolve in the opposite direction, with machine intelligence being hidden deep in the complex workings of outwardly simple or even invisible devices and digital interactions. [23] This is our sweet spot: Providing the intelligence, technology, and human expertise our customers need to find trusted answers. [16] Perhaps it’s time to start calling it what it is, Augmented Intelligence that we need in order to deal with and survive the increasing complexity of the machines and the world we inhabit. [20] The animal and child levels may be the key to making really convincing, well-rounded forms of intelligence, rather than the intelligence of chess-playing machines like Deep Blue, which are too easy to dismiss as `mindless’. [19]

Machines in the future will be similar, and the family robot will after a few years be, like a pet, literally irreplaceable. [19] In the future, drunks will be able to use cars, which will take them home like loyal horses. [19] Jamais Cascio, a writer and futurist specializing in possible futures scenario outcomes, expressed similar concerns: “The big exception will be in the world of civic response and emergency drones, whether for police work, fire suppression, emergency responders, climate mitigation, and the like. [23] Tiffany Shlain, filmmaker, host of the AOL series The Future Starts Here, and founder of The Webby Awards, responded, “The parts of life that will change most will be our sense of memory and interactions with new ideas. [23] A future that is already here with climate change, depleting resources, and unequal living conditions. [15]

Whether these type of machines may have a future in the home is an interesting question.
