[1] Importantly, today’s biggest cloud computing services run on a worldwide network of secure, redundant data centers that are regularly upgraded to the latest generation of fast and efficient computing hardware – all of which translates into assured business continuity, higher system performance, reliable data backup and faster disaster recovery for customers. [2] Cloud computing is the resources both hardware and software which are delivered as a service on the network. [3] Cloud computing services also allow organizations to scale their IT resources elastically, implementing more or less computing power, storage, bandwidth and other resources as they?re needed even into individual geographic locations. [2] Cloud computing eliminates the capital expense of buying hardware and software and setting up and running on-premises data centers–the racks of servers, round-the-clock electricity for power and cooling, IT experts managing the infrastructure, etc. [2] Cloud computing is necessary because the growth of data is clobbering business IT environments, our federal government, federal court system and pretty much any data-driven business. [4] Cloud computing solves the problem of exploding volumes of data by using technological innovations of distributed computing. [4] The OpenStack mission is “to produce a ubiquitous Open Source Cloud Computing platform that is easy to use, simple to implement, interoperable between deployments, works well at all scales, and meets the needs of users and operators of both public and private clouds”. [5] The original mission was “to produce the ubiquitous Open Source Cloud Computing platform that will meet the needs of public and private clouds regardless of size, by being simple to implement and massively scalable”. There are three different ways to deploy cloud computing resources: public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud. [2]

Google App Engine (often referred to as GAE or simply App Engine ) is a web framework and cloud computing platform for developing and hosting web applications in Google-managed data centers. [6] Modern cloud computing services fall into three broad categories: infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS), and software-as-a-service (SaaS). In the 2000s the delivery of computing services occurred over the Internet, including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics and more (“the cloud”). [2] While the Cloud is by no means a public utility, it has made computing power available as a service that businesses and individuals can buy online for much less than it costs to buy your own hardware, software and administrators. [4] The good news is that computing power is only going to become greater, the cost will become less and users won?t need to understand how the Cloud works in order to benefit from the new capabilities it offers. [4] Clouds, however, do share common distributed system architecture and technology forming three modes defined by distance from the edge: Centralized Clouds, Edge Clouds, and Edge nodes taken collectively also known as fog computing. [1] Ability to ride the same cost curves and improvements by exploitation of the same architecture and fundamental underlying computing technologies as other Clouds whether centralized fee-for-service Clouds or closed private clouds which are also centralized. Blockchain will allow Cloud services to not only offer increased layers of security and data integrity, but it will allow services to become more decentralized as the computing power of a blockchain network are harnessed to make Cloud networks more powerful and efficient. [4]

[2] Many predict that the future of the Cloud could be serverless, meaning that rather than working with one service provider, a serverless architecture would allow customers to move their applications, data and services between multiple providers. [4] Hybrid clouds combine public and private clouds, bound together by technology that allows data and applications to be shared between them, which gives organizations greater flexibility and more deployment options. [2] AppScale automatically deploys and scales unmodified Google App Engine applications over popular public and private cloud systems and on-premises clusters. [6]

A lot of platform as a service companies use Google Cloud or AWS as their underlying infrastructure as well. To ensure acceptable performance of widely dispersed distributed services, large organizations typically implement edge computing by deploying server farms with clustering and large scale storage networks.
