Less than a week ago, Bithumb, South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange, suffered a security breach, losing more than $30 million in customer funds stored in digital assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. [8] South Korea is one of the world's major cryptocurrency trading centres, and is home to one of the busiest virtual coin exchanges, Bithumb. [7]

In May 2018, 40 jurisdictions including U.S. states, Canadian provinces and national regulators in both countries launched a formal probe dubbed " Operation Cryptosweep," to crack down on fraudulent cryptocurrency trading. [10] Panic caused a flash crash on Indian cryptocurrency trading platforms and triggered massive sell-off. [14] The vast majority of cryptocurrency trading, however, happens in countries with few regulations and lax enforcement. [10] They can take coordinated actions to increase or decrease prices - and because there's no real regulation of cryptocurrency markets, it might not even be illegal for them to do so. [10] The latest attack highlights the lack of security and weak regulation of global cryptocurrency markets. Earlier this month, it was revealed that Eric Cheng, a Singaporean entrepreneur, spent all of his life savings and sold his properties including two Rolls Royces, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and a Porsche to acquire a 100 percent stake in a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange called BitTrade. [8] The cryptocurrency market has entered a bear cycle amidst a 70 percent correction. [8]

Many of the people who own large amounts of bitcoin have been in the cryptocurrency community for a number of years and know each other. [15] A report from Russian Analytic Credit Rating Agency (ARCA) released Thursday, June 7, states that cryptocurrency is not yet usable as a means of payment. [21] In an effort to promote their initial coin offering, the social media platform ASKfm sponsored four "crypto enthusiasts" on their climb of Mount Everest, so they could bury $50,000 worth of the company's cryptocurrency, ASKT, at the peak. [23] On June 18, BTC and ethereum (ETH) led the surge in cryptocurrency prices, climbing by roughly 4% by midday, according to Coin Telegraph. [24] A good example of the current cryptocurrency woes is the initial coin offering (ICO). [21]

The current Bitcoin slump reportedly stems from nations such as Japan and the Philippines now regulating cryptocurrency. [21] The BIS report was fairly scathing, suggesting that "the more people use a cryptocurrency, the more cumbersome payments become." [24] One of the most popular lines from the report included the suggestion that storage demands associated with cryptocurrency adoption on a large scale could be so heavy as to "bring the internet to a halt." [24]

For instance, in mid-April, Intangible Labs, creator of a new cryptocurrency called Basis (meant to be less volatile than others), picked up $133 million from investors including Bain Capital Ventures, GV (Google's venture arm), Lightspeed, and Foundation Capital.
