Many chemical engineers go into petroleum and chemical industries, but other popular areas are electronics, food, paper, and pharmaceutics. [16] They work very closely with architects, architectural engineers, and engineering technicians on building design and on-site problem solving. [19] A degree in chemical engineering is highly valuable and sought-out in today’s society, as engineers are vital when it comes to taking raw materials and turning them into viable consumer products. [16] Women who are returning to school to pursue a career in engineering might be able to receive a scholarship from the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). [16] Engineering Aid — H140 EAs assist construction engineers in development of construction plans. [26] Mining engineers, who are multi-skilled in many areas of engineering, analyze data from drilling and geological reports before planning and designing mining sites. [19] Civil engineering is a very demanding yet fulfilling career, as the engineer is able to work on a project from its inception right to its completion. [19] Construction engineers are called upon to apply both project management skills and mathematical expertise to their work. [19] Railway engineers apply mechanical design skills and knowledge of propulsion systems to design train vessels. [19] Hydraulic engineers also design machinery which uses hydraulic power and structural elements that can withstand intense water pressure. [19] Traffic engineers consider, review, and modify aspects of road design to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion. [19] While architects conceive the external design and aesthetics, these engineers design a structure’s internal skeleton and foundation to ensure that it does not collapse. [19] Common projects for water resource engineers include wetland restoration, as well as storm water and sewerage system design and planning. [19] If you’re wondering what exactly a chemical engineer does, consider the products you use daily – from hyenic and cosmetic to utility products, much of what we use is produced and engineered by chemical engineers. [16] Chemical engineers learn to put chemicals to use – from improving the way that factories use chemicals to create products, to solving issues in rust and pollution. [16]

[16] More than a decade later, in June 2010 Egyptian computer engineer Wael Ghonim anonymously created a page titled “We Are All Khaled Said” on the social media site Facebook to publicize the death of a 28-year-old Egyptian man beaten to death by police. [14] Engineers in this field understand construction materials and techniques. [19] This is not to say, however, that these engineers do not get out into the field. [19] At Brown and Caldwell, we value diversity in the workplace, supporting organizations like the Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers and the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers. [16] Margaret’s mother, Margaret Nienstedt Fisher, was the daughter of Saginaw “pioneers” and her father was a Mechanical Engineer and a member of the Board of Education for the Saginaw Public School District. [16] These engineers are typically employed or contracted by construction and development companies. [19]

In the private sector, civil engineers frequently work for or with construction firms, with those jobs making up approximately 50% of civil engineering positions. [19] Many civil engineers have jobs that require a very hands-on role in construction, while others may have positions more heavily weighted toward supervisory and administrative skills. [19] Civil engineers have one of the world’s most important jobs: they build our quality of life. [19] If you choose a niche field, you’ll probably make more money, but sacrifice the experience in becoming a well-rounded civil engineer. [19] Much of the work that civil engineers do entails detailed designs and calculations performed in an office environment. [19] Civil engineers typically work full time; and about a third of them work more than forty hours per week. [19] Civil engineers and architects often work with each other, as their work sometimes overlaps. [19] When managing projects, civil engineers may, in fact, work largely from their car or truck as they move from site to site. [19] A civil engineer will concentrate on making sure the structure will be safe and be able to endure everyday and extreme conditions, while the architect will focus on the aesthetics of the structural work, as well as concentrate on the look, feel, and functionality. [19] Because the architect is ultimately responsible that the building is safe for its occupants, he or she will work closely with a civil engineer to ensure the structure meets all the appropriate building codes. [19] The civil engineer can also advise and/or select the appropriate structural materials, and help with specifying the plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems that will be needed. [19] The civil engineer will analyze and evaluate the structural integrity of the design that the architect has created, and find ways to make the construction design possible by suggesting alterations/modifications in order to turn the architect’s vision into reality. [19] Civil engineers are often responsible for large teams that are involved in project design, planning, and construction processes. [19] Civil engineers do a lot more than design buildings and bridges. [19] Civil engineers have many duties; they interact with clients, customers, inspectors, suppliers, vendors, architects and design teams. [19] With creativity and technical skill, civil engineers plan, design, construct and operate the facilities essential to modern life, ranging from bridges and highway systems to water treatment plants and energy efficient buildings. [19] I?ve received a few emails asking about what the career of a civil engineer is like. [19] Meet up with a professional civil engineer and ask a few well thought-out questions as to what working as a civil engineer is really like. [19] Civil engineers are problem solvers, meeting the challenges of pollution, traffic congestion, drinking water and energy needs, urban redevelopment and community planning. [19] Would you make a good Civil Engineer? Take our career test to find out how you match with this and over 800 other careers. [19] It follows, therefore, that civil engineers have particularly varied career options. [19] It would also be wise to get an internship and spend as much time with professional civil engineers as possible. [19] Every time we open a water faucet, we expect water to come out, without thinking that civil engineers made it possible, in many cases by designing systems that transport water to cities from mountain sources that are sometimes hundreds of miles away. [19] More recent history is also marked by famous civil engineering marvels including the Eiffel Tower, named after Gustave Eiffel, the French civil engineer whose company built it; the Golden Gate Bridge, designed by Joseph Strauss and Charles Ellis; the Panama Canal (John Frank Stevens); the Hoover Dam (John L. Savage); and the Brooklyn Bridge, designed by John August Roebling and his son Washington Roebling. [19]

It supports human communication via electronic mail (e-mail), “chat rooms,” newsgroups, and audio and video transmission and allows people to work collaboratively at many different locations. [14] The Commission requires electronic filing of all its applications and has eliminated paper forms. [13] Broadcast application forms available for electronic filing can be retrieved through the Media Bureau Electronic Filing page. [13] Electronic hobbyists saw themselves in open revolt against the “priesthood” of the mainframe computer and worked together in computer-enthusiast groups to spread computing to the masses. [14] In this chatty new world of electronic networking, a household’s refrigerator and coffeemaker could talk to a television, and all three could be monitored from the office computer. [14]

Electronic texts have made it simple for students to “cut and paste” published sources (e.g., encyclopaedia articles) into their own papers. [14] Quartermaster — B450 QMs determine their ship’s position by visual and electronic means. [26] The presence of a “paper” or PDF form does not override the requirement for electronic filing. [13] Although some authors and publishers challenged the project for fear of losing control of copyrighted material, similar digitization projects were launched by Microsoft Corporation and the online book vendor Amazon.com, although the latter company proposed that each electronic page would be retrieved for a small fee shared with the copyright holders.
