[23] Probiotics are defined as “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host?. [21] There do not appear to be studies evaluating the benefits of probiotics for acute bacterial prostatitis or for chronic non-bacterial prostatitis — which is the most common form of prostatitis. [19]

Various markers of inflammation have been found to be elevated in people with IBS. [23] People with IBS are also highly likely to suffer from other diseases or disorders. [22] Higher CRP – People with IBS have an average hs- CRP of 1.17, while healthy controls have a level of 0.72 ( R ). [23] Th1 Dominance – people with IBS are more likely to be Th1 dominant (elevated IL-12) ( R ). [23] IBD is much rarer than IBS, and generally only affects a small portion of the population, whereas IBS impacts over ten percent of people. [22] People with Th2 can also have IBS because of Mast cells and other types of inflammation. [23] People with a genetic predisposition to produce higher TNF are more likely to have IBS and IBD. [23] People with IBS are more likely also to have depression or anxiety, have trouble sleeping, become fatigued, have headaches and muscle aches, experience a reduced sexual drive, have frequent urination problems, or have body image issues ( 7 ). [22] In people with IBS, markers of oxidative stress were significantly higher – specifically, blood levels of xanthine oxidase (XO), adenosine deaminase (AD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO). [23] While IBS can affect anyone, certain people are at a higher risk of developing it. [22] Because IBS is chronic, hard to predict, and impacts your quality of life, it affects people in other ways beyond gastrointestinal distress. [22]

I personally dealt with IBS myself when I struggled with many health issues. [23] If you have a history of PTSD, trauma, abuse, or mental health disorders, you are much more likely to have IBS, so understanding your risk factors and managing your stress becomes even more critical ( 12 ). [22]

Living with IBS can be difficult, which is why understanding the disease and its many-faceted causes are so critical. [22] Several doctors believe that IBS is a psychogenic or “in your head” problem, with unknown causes. [23] Ask your doctor about the cause of IBS and they will likely give you a blank stare. [23] CRH is a direct cause of IBS by increasing the flow or motor speed in the colon and decreasing it in the small intestine. [23] I already spoke about CRH being a cause of IBS. But cortisol may also be involved. [23] A wide variety of inflammation types can cause IBS. There’s no one cytokine that’s dominant. [23] What affects you and your digestion one way may impact someone else completely differently, so understanding your risk factors and triggers will be important for pinpointing the causes of your IBS. [22] Because no diagnostic test or imaging can reveal IBS definitively, the diagnosis is sometimes made when other issues or causes have been ruled out, which takes time. [22] Depending on which type of IBS you have, your doctor may recommend different treatments, and different natural remedies may be more successful than others for each type, as well. [22] Women tend to experience a decrease in IBS during menopause, where estrogen and progesterone decline. ( R ) This indicates that the hormones may not have as much to do with IBS as does their fluctuation. [23] Women and those under 50 are more likely to suffer from IBS. [22]

Several medical conditions appear with greater frequency in patients diagnosed with IBS. [23] For some patients, psychological stressors can worsen IBS, such as a history of physical, mental or sexual abuse. [22] In some sense, IBS may be considered IBD-lite, which means it’s like IBD (Crohn”s, colitis), but with lower levels of inflammation. [22] The three types of IBS are based on the various changes to your bowel movements. [22] As you can guess, this category of IBS includes both types of bowel movements. [22]

Be aware that a number of supplements, including fish oil, magnesium, high doses of vitamin C, berberine and turmeric/curcumin can cause diarrhea, so you may want to avoid these or reduce your dosage if you find they are exacerbating IBS symptoms. [19] Several natural supplements can also assist with relieving IBS symptoms and restoring healthy digestion. [22] There are many strategies, lifestyle changes, and natural remedies you can use at home to manage your IBS symptoms, reduce flare-ups, and treat your disease naturally. [22]

Certain foods have been found to be more likely to cause IBS symptoms, and avoiding or cutting back on these may provide you with some relief. [22]
