[30]

Current performing altcoins are Ethereum Classic, Binance Coin, Qtum and Bitcoin Diamond. POSSIBLY USEFUL

The news came amid long-standing speculation that Coinbase, which is the most popular trading service the U.S., would add new assets. [1] “We followed our public process for adding new assets to Coinbase. [1]

While other exchanges offer a wider selection of digital currencies to trade, Coinbase has elected to proceed cautiously while regulators evaluate the legal status of the currencies. [1]

It is currently the 18th most valuable digital currency and its market cap of approximately $1.5 billion is dwarfed by that of Ethereum ($53.3 billion) and of Bitcoin ($117.8 billion). [1]

Coinbase said it took measures to ensure insiders did not have an early opportunity to trade on the news, which is what critics say occurred when the company added Bitcoin Cash to its platform. [1]

Coinbase has long been the exchange that has only supported a few tokens, those being Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH). [4] Coinbase, the largest U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange, has only supported four coins so far: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash. [8]

Amidst the social conversation, some tried to draw a connection between the ETC listing and the fact that, to date, the exchange hasn’t added support for the cryptocurrency XRP. As XRP is the third-largest crypto by market capitalization, much of the surprise stemmed from the fact that Coinbase would move to list a “lower value” coin. [7] New cryptocurrencies get added to crypto-exchanges all the time, but when Coinbase adds one, it’s news. [8] The company reiterated that it plans to add assets within that category, as well as Bitcoin forks, to its exchange in the future, though it didn’t provide a timeline nor did it mention a specific asset that’s being added. [8]

Coinbase is being extra careful in its process of adding ETC, no doubt because of the great debacle that occurred when the exchange tried adding Bitcoin Cash. [4] Coinbase previously announced its decision to list Bitcoin Cash as one Bitcoin fork available on the platform. [3] Coinbase’s previous guidance provides that Coinbase will only list assets that are listed on Pro and Prime. [6] The ETC digital asset has turned out to be the real new addition to Coinbase, instead of newer, more hyped coins. [9] ETH will go live on Coinbase in September after a preparatory work, required to provide support for a new coin. [2] Doesn’t matter if you like $ETC or not, Coinbase adding more coins is bullish for Crypto. [7] Rumour has it that one of Kim Jong Un’s conditions for denuclearization was Coinbase adding $ETC. [7] We are announcing this both internally and to the public consistent with our process for adding new assets,” Coinbase stated in its blog. [4] In the next few months, Coinbase expects to reach “the final testing phase of the technical integration,” and at that stage, the exchange will announce the ETC launch date on its blog and Twitter page. [4]

It should be noted that Coinbase has some very strict requirements when it comes to choosing particular cryptos to be listed on its platform. [3] Coinbase is one of the biggest fiat to Crypto Ramps in the whole world of Crypto right now, and this is bullish for Crypto overall. [7]

The ETC asset was, until now, mostly supported by the Korean markets, but new liquidity may come once the Coinbase listing is completed. [9] Insider trading or not, Coinbase is making sure that doesn’t happen this time around. [4] For this reason, Coinbase only has a handful of cryptocurrencies, but their trading volumes are extremely high. [3]

Many projects have tried to get the exposure and liquidity of Coinbase, with Ripple (XRP) being the most aggressive one, but ETC has taken the spotlight. [9] On Coinbase Pro and Coinbase Prime, any customer who had previously held ETC after the July 2016 Ethereum hard fork and who didn’t withdraw that ETC before January 2017 will receive credit for the amount of ETC they held. [4] The date for the Coinbase announcement to become a reality has not yet been determined; however, it could be concluded that it will happen in a medium term, taking a few months for its implementation. [3] Back in April, Bloomberg reported that distributed ledger startup Ripple tried unsuccessfully to get the token listed on Coinbase. [7] When Coinbase announced it was adding support for ERC20, the hope was that this meant the exchange would soon be adding other tokens to its list and that hope is now realized. [4]

As such, the network is known by some as “a continuation of the original ethereum blockchain,” a name bestowed after a code change on ethereum reversed losses stemming from the failed project. [7]

Support for Ethereum was added on Coinbase after the hard fork and only exchange users with Ethereum balances were eligible for ETC withdrawals. [16] Coinbase has finally added a fifth cryptocurrency to what was formally the “elite four” of the platform, Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, and Bitcoin Cash. [13]

Coinbase has credited everyone who had Ethereum balance during the hard fork in 2016 and did not withdraw. [16]

“Ethereum Classic is a cryptocurrency that was the result of a hard fork of the Ethereum network in July 2016″ is correct, but written in a way that will confuse people into thinking ETC is a fork.” [16] “Ethereum Classic $ETC up 25% following @coinbase announcement.” [16]

Is the goal to undermine Ethereum ? ETC really isn’t the first coin I would have thought they add. [37] Coinbase, the biggest cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., and one of the bigger ones globally, has decided to add another coin to its stable. [23] Our January 4th, 2018 statement continues to stand: we have made no decision to add additional assets to either GDAX or Coinbase. [15] Do you think Coinbase will add Ripple next? Let us know in the comments below. [15] They add a clone, a complete pump&dump shitcoin because they have a ton of ETC it sitting in their wallets (and in wallets of DCG investors) waiting for it to dump it on Coinbase newbies. [37]

Other altcoins are also making it to exchanges, ETC among them- Coinbase has recently announced on Twitter about its plans to list the coin in September. [23] Other companies include bitFlyer USA, a Bitcoin exchange, Coinbase, XRP II, a part of Ripple, Genesis Global Trading Inc., and Circle Internet Financial. [16] When Coinbase reaches the final testing phase of technical integration, which is expected to occur over the next few months, the Coinbase team will publicly announce a launch date for trading. [12]

The cryptocurrency will also be listed on Coinbase Asset Management, and the Coinbase Index Fund will rebalance to include ETC. The company plans to offer support for ETC in all geographies where the asset is compliant with local law. [11] Coinbase also said that it took measures to ensure insiders did not have an early opportunity to trade on the news, which is what critics say occurred when the company added Bitcoin Cash to its platform. [11] “We followed our public process for adding new assets to Coinbase,” the company said. [11] This is part of a process that is being carried out by Coinbase to keep expanding with new assets. [14] Correct me if I’m wrong. but I’m pretty sure Digital Currency Group (Peter Thiel) are big backers of Coinbase and also some coins, ETC being one of them and ZEC another that obviously just got listed on Gemini. [37] It also bears examining why Coinbase adding a single coin SHOULD create such a frenzy in the cryptocurrency space, to begin with. [13] Thats how Coinbase is promoting innovation in crypto, adding 2 useless BTC clones and one useless ETH clone. [37] Unfortunately you are right, but Coinbase is adding only shitcoins after BTC and ETH. I simply dont understand it, there is enough more interesting, innovative crypto out there. [37] Honestly this shit REALLY pisses me off! Adding such a dead project to Coinbase for casual people to lose money in and supporting such a dead piece of shit project infuriates the shit out of me. [37] Now it’s pretty evident that coinbase will be adding shitcoins solely based on how little work they will require to integrate. [37]
