Anant Agarwal, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and founder of the online education service edX, said traditional college programs are useless for millions of workers who need to upgrade their skills. [13] Although the panelists stressed that better education will help ensure that U.S. workers don’t lose out to computers and robots, Northeastern University president Joseph Aoun warned that today’s colleges aren’t prepared to deliver the kind of training workers will need. [13]

Higher education institutions need to actively engage with their students. [4] Below, we discuss the two main functions of a higher education institution that smart campuses should address – staff operations and the student experience. [4] The Smart Campus is an end-to-end digital experience for students and staff that provides a holistic solution for the higher education sector. [4] Higher education CIOs listed digital business/digital transformation as their fifth most strategic business priority behind enrolment, student success, growth/market share, and retention. [4] A 2017 Gartner survey of 3,160 CIOs across 98 countries, including 247 higher education CIOs, found that, “59 percent of higher education CIOs expect significant business model change due to digital transformation.” [4] Women in advanced economies also have, on average, higher levels of education and digital literacy, giving them a comparative advantage in a labour market that is continuously transformed by technological innovation. [22] The Automation Technician program provides an introduction to industrial automation including digital electronic, process control and programming of PLCs, robotics and SCADA systems. [22]

We then estimated the extent to which these skill requirements could change by 2030, as automation and artificial technologies are deployed in the workplace, and backed up our findings with a detailed survey of more than 3,000 business leaders in seven countries, who largely confirmed our quantitative findings. [23] While we based our estimates on the automation potential of sectors and countries today, this could change depending on the pace and enthusiasm with which AI is adopted in companies, sectors, and countries. [23] For companies, these shifts are part of the larger automation challenge that will require a thorough rethink of how work is organized within firms — including what the strategic workforce needs are likely to be, and how to set about achieving them. [23] To give a sense of magnitude: more than one in three workers may need to adapt their skills? mix by 2030, which is more than double the number who could be displaced by automation under some of our adoption scenarios — and lifelong learning of new skills will be essential for all. [23] Although there is no consensus on whether automated artificial intelligence or AI will be a net destroyer of jobs, there is emerging agreement that automation technologies will replace certain tasks performed by workers as much, or more, than they replace entire jobs. [1] S outh Korea, Singapore, Japan, Germany and Canada are the countries most prepared for the coming wave of automation driven by robotics, artificial intelligence and other technologies, according to a new ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit. [1] “Vocational training in most countries is currently far from being able to address the challenges of automation,” she says. [1] Estonia, France, the United Kingdom, United States and Australia round off the top 10 – all of them high income countries – in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s “automation readiness index?, which ranks 25 major countries – the G20 economies plus five others including South Africa, Vietnam, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. [1] “In this sense, no countries are genuinely ready for the age of intelligent automation,” it says in a damning assessment, not even Germany. [1]

These country differences are the result of different industry mixes in each country, which in turn affect the automation potential of economies and the future skills mix. [23] The International Society of Automation ( www.isa.org ) is a nonprofit professional association that sets the standard for those who apply engineering and technology to improve the management, safety, and cybersecurity of modern automation and control systems used across industry and critical infrastructure. While predictions vary, it is apparent that the rise of automation and machine learning will thoroughly change the landscape of the labor market as machines take over some jobs entirely, like those on assembly lines, while partially automating others, like tax accounting. [5] While many people fear that automation will reduce the number of jobs for humans, we note that the diffusion of AI will take time. [23] This may sound apocalyptic but Johnson points out that humans have used tools from the beginning; to him automation is no different. [5]

Overall, our survey suggests that European firms are more likely to fill future staffing needs in the new automation era by focusing on retraining, while U.S. firms are more open to new hiring. [23] Among other priorities, they show the urgency of putting in place large-scale retraining initiatives for a majority of workers who will be affected by automation — initiatives that are sorely lacking today. [23] Personalize your experience by deciding how you want your Cox Homelife Automation system to work for you. [25] In the longer term, widespread adoption of intelligent automation technologies is likely to have a profound effect on labour markets. [1] There are an enormous number of unknowns about precisely how automation technologies will affect the workforce and what types of responses will be effective. [1]

Smart campuses include Connected Workplace solutions to empower educators and operational staff with the automation and digital tools needed to drive productivity and agility. [4] To keep up with automation, train workers from early age, panelists say Globe Staff Computers will keep getting smarter. [13] This is because, in advanced economies, women tend to be employed in occupations that require high levels of social competence and empathy (for example nursing professions) and are therefore more resistant to automation than other lower-skills occupations such as machine operators or assembly line workers. [14]

Technological innovation, of which automation is a form, changes the way in which work is organised and performed across different economic sectors. [14] This does not mean that automation alone will eliminate any form of gender gap in the labour market. [14]

[29] Working knowledge and experience in automation, vision systems, PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and HMIs (human machine interfaces). [30]

Laboratory automation is a multi-disciplinary approach benefiting from technologies in the lab that facilitate new and improved processes. [29] While not every single interruption can be eliminated with automation (emergencies will still happen), certain types of notifications can be automated to save time and reduce the burden on staff. [12] Automation is designed to make life easier for teachers, staff and parents. [12] Not only is automation a time saver for paper processes, it’s also a time saver for things like notifications and other interruptions that might reduce staff productivity. [12]

Care must be taken in sample preparation to ensure high quality results, and liquid handling automation is a key component of a robust assay workflow. [29]

Workflow automation has taken many professional industries by storm, helping many workplaces reduce the number of tasks they have to perform, along wiht a substantial amount of workload. [12] While not necessarily a direct and measurable result of automation, students might receive the most benefit from workflow automation because it allows teachers to spend more time engaging with students rather than worrying about processes.
