While GE and Siemens are heavily focused on applying AI to create a holistic manufacturing process, other companies that specialize in industrial robotics are focusing on making robots smarter. [14] The company claims that this practical experience has given it a leg up in developing AI for manufacturing and industrial applications. [14] Fanuc, the Japanese company which is a leader in industrial robotics, has recently made a strong push for greater connectivity and AI usage within their equipment. [14] So-called “smart manufacturing” (roughly, industrial IoT and AI) is projected to grow noticeably in the 3 to 5 years, according to TrendForce. [14]

“For industrial systems, the impact of this technology, especially as it continues to mature, can be game-changing. The BEIS recently announced the UK Artificial Sector Deal between the government and the private sector, outlining a package of 603m in new private and public sector funding for AI, and up to 324m from existing government funding. [1] Deep learning, the rocket fuel of the current AI boom, is a revival of one of the oldest ideas in AI. The technique involves passing data through webs of math loosely inspired by how brain cells work, known as artificial neural networks. [1] Artificial neural networks became an established idea in AI not long after the Dartmouth workshop. The room-filling Perceptron Mark 1 from 1958, for example, learned to distinguish different geometric shapes, and got written up in The New York Times as the “Embryo of Computer Designed to Read and Grow Wiser.” [1]

One can find many works with artificial neural networks, the backbone of deep learning. [1] Artificial neural networks continued to fall short of expectations not just in medical imaging, but in computer vision in general. [1] In a computer simulation of their new artificial neural network design, they provided thousands of handwriting samples. [1]

AI software will need to master tasks like these if it is to get close to the multifaceted, adaptable, and creative intelligence of humans. [1] In far future, machines may surpass human intelligence, take command & control of earth and we the humans could be working under the supervision of machines. [1] Others were inspired by the importance of learning to human and animal intelligence. [1]

Fanuc is using deep reinforcement learning to help some of its industrial robots train themselves. [14] Most industrial robots were very strong and stupid, which meant getting near them while they worked was a major health hazard requiring safety barriers between people and machines. [14] It is described as an industrial internet of things platform for manufacturing. [14] It is powered by Predix, their industrial internet of things platform. [14]

While humans had to initially program every specific action an industrial robot takes, we eventually developed robots that could learn for themselves. [14]

Signals act like artificial neurons and move across thousands of arrays to particular cross points, which function like synapses. [1] Shallow networks (consisting of a few layers of artificial neurons) could not solve difficult problems and deep networks (consisting of many layers of artificial neurons) could not be trained because they were too big. [1]

On April 25, 2018, the European Commission (EC) published its “Artificial Intelligence for Europe” communication (the Communication), in which it sets out a roadmap for its AI initiatives. Our challenge as a nation, and my determination as Prime Minister, is not just to lead the world in the 4th industrial revolution – but to ensure that every part of our country powers that success.
