Snapchat was also the first to implement the stories feature which have since been copied by Facebook and Instagram, and it’s clear that Snapchat still has the upper edge when it comes to that specific feature. [2] After Facebook cloned Snapchat features like “Stories,” he said: “We would really appreciate it if they copied our data protection practices also.” [5]

We expect that the Facebook vs Snapchat vs Instagram battle will continue to slant in favor of the last two, with Snapchat perhaps even passing Instagram as more young people come onto the platform. [2] While Facebook remains one of the largest social media giants, it no longer holds the top spot for young people when comparing Facebook vs Snapchat vs Instagram. [2] More teens are splitting up with Facebook, choosing to spend their social media time on rivals including Snapchat and YouTube. [6] The survey showed only 10% of teens said they used Facebook most often, compared to 32% for YouTube and 35% for Snapchat. Snapchat is built around the idea that messages and photos that users send on the platform all disappear after a pre-set amount of time, providing some sense of security within the iOS and Android app. Facebook, on the other hand, is “just a bunch of features” — now including ephemeral stories — placed within an app without an underlying philosophy of user privacy, Spiegel argued. [8] What does this mean for Facebook? It’s certainly not the first study to show that The Social Network’s losing ground with teens – a report from investment firm Piper Jaffray released last October indicated much the same, with Snapchat and Instagram well ahead of other platforms in teen usage. [9] Now, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat are used by sizable majorities of this age group, while only 51% of teens say they use Facebook. [10] Pew surveyed 743 U.S. teens that fell into the age bracket mentioned above and out of those surveyed, 35 percent said they used Snapchat most often, followed by YouTube (32 percent), Instagram (15 percent), Facebook (10 percent), Twitter (3 percent), Reddit (1 percent), and Tumblr (less than 1 Percent). [10]

Stories (currently available on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Messenger) is a new type of social media and short-form photo and video content easily digestible and captured from one’s mobile phone. [11] YouTube’s focus on video likely makes it a more passive user experience, and Facebook too has been pushing more and more video into feeds. That would likely suggest that both Instagram and Snapchat provide more active, engaging options, which could provide more marketing opportunities, dependent on your approach. [9] Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram are the three biggest social media platforms in the world right now. [12] Back then, the top platforms were Facebook (71%), Instagram (52%), Snapchat (41%), and Twitter (33%). [13] For this, Snapchat is the go-to for 35%, followed by Youtube (32%), Instagram (15%), and Facebook (10%). [13] Snapchat had previously focused their growth almost entirely to a U.S.-based audience while Facebook leveraged its international WhatsApp ( 1.5 billion monthly active users; over 300 million daily active users) and Messenger (over 1.3 billion monthly active users; 70 million daily active users) audiences for global consumption and adoption of Stories. [11] Whether that’s a reflection of the broader populous catching onto Facebook (and teens wanting to escape prying eyes) or a response to rising privacy concerns, Snapchat has been able to maintain, and even boost, its appeal. [9] Snapchat hasn’t been without its own data leak scandals, however, and Facebook chief security officer Alex Stamos took to Twitter to point that out. [8] Snapchat is getting bigger every day and Facebook finally has a worthy competitor to go against. [12] “So no, I don’t think copying Snapchat would be a smart move” for Facebook, he finished. [8]

Referencing Facebook’s decision to copy Snapchat stories in the Facebook app, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp, Spiegel said, “We would really appreciate it if they copied our data protection practices also.” [8] It’s no secret that Instagram and Facebook Stories were more or less a complete rip off of everything Snapchat was trying to do (but better, in my humble opinion ). [14]

It also gives Snap a one up on Facebook, a company that has mimicked Snapchat’s key features in an attempt to stay relevant. [10] While Facebook imitates its features, the CEO remained confident that Snapchat’s ” values are hard to copy.” [8]

[11] Recode’s annual Code Conference is underway in Rancho Palos Verdes, California this week, and on Tuesday Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel took the stage to discuss the ephemeral app’s controversial update, Facebook’s copying, and the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal. The dominance of Facebook and Twitter as preferred social media platforms may be in trouble, as teenagers flock to more visual sites like YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. The survey found 51 percent of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 use Facebook, compared with 85 percent for YouTube, 72 percent for Instagram, and 69 percent who are on Snapchat. [29] For marketers and entrepreneurs, Snapchat isn?t as simple as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. [30] Snapchat is particularly popular with the college-age audience; in the U.S., UK, France, and Canada it offers more reach to the 18-20-year-old age group than Facebook and Instagram. Snapchat posts, by default, disappear shortly after they?re viewed, and an increasing number of Instagram users are taking advantage of its optional-stories posts which disappear after 24 hours. [3]

[4] By comparison, 10% of teens say Facebook is their most-used online platform, and even fewer cite Twitter, Reddit or Tumblr as the site they visit most often. [4] Facebook usage lags behind rivals such as YouTube, where 85% of teens say they spend their time. [6] Mark Zuckerberg says recent changes have reduced the amount of time users spend on Facebook by 50 million hours each day, but those changes aren’t the only reasons, according to users. [6] It was a clear reference to the bruising privacy scandal Facebook has suffered over the past two months after Cambridge Analytica secured the data of 87 million users. [5] The privacy concerns with Facebook after the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal were certainly not helping the company out, and they are still struggling to regain the trust of their users. [2]

Being able to post statuses or share links without interesting photo content definitely appeals to a large section of users, so it’s clear that Facebook isn?t going anywhere anytime soon. [2] The network is still incredibly large, but considering that young people are becoming one of the largest markets and consumers of social media content it’s clear that falling out of their good graces could spell trouble for Facebook down the road. [2] Three years ago, Facebook was the dominant social media site among U.S. teens, visited by 71 percent of people in that magic, trendsetting demographic. [35] Teens know that college admission officers, potential employers and even would-be romantic partners often check people out on Facebook, so it tends to feel more like adding to a permanent record than an in-the-moment way of participating in a conversation that is much less likely to stick around to haunt them. [3]

The second is that users post to these apps almost exclusively from smartphones while Facebook can be fully accessed from either computer or a phone. [3] Thompson believes, Facebook was “able to expand their access in a horizontal way to more users and more time within those users themselves.” [7] Thompson said, aggregators such as Google and Facebook act as intermediaries between the consumer and publishers, and are creating much more value for themselves than for anyone who builds on their respective platforms, including publishers that use those platforms for distribution. [7] Thompson suggested that industry observers are wrong to talk about Google and Facebook in the context of the Microsoft antitrust case, because Windows is a platform, while Google and Facebook are aggregators. [7] He said that if regulators consider Google and Facebook from a platform perspective, they will fail to produce effective regulation. [7]

The survey also found that lower-income teens are more likely to prefer Facebook than those from higher-income households. [1] Notably, lower-income teens are more likely to gravitate toward Facebook than those from higher-income households – a trend consistent with previous Center surveys. [4]

Strangely enough, however, Facebook is the most popular social media network for kids from families with low income (under $30,000 a year). [2] Considering that just three years ago that number was 71 percent, it’s clear that Facebook is in a decline at least in terms of popularity with young people. [2] A slight majority (51 percent) still uses Facebook, but that’s down from 71 percent compared with Pew’s 2014-2015 survey. [3]

Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel tried to distance his company and its practices from those of Facebook. [7] Microsoft president Brad Smith compared the pressure on Facebook today to what Microsoft faced when it was charged under antitrust laws in the 90s, and said the company had to change. [7] There’s no doubt that Facebook is currently the dominant force when it comes to social media, and it remains the biggest social media network by a large margin. [2] In that sense, Thompson said, “the greatest regulatory failure of the last 10 years is Facebook being allowed to buy Instagram.” [7] Fixing his gaze on Facebook, he said: “We would really appreciate it if they copied our data protection practices also.” [5] Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg was due on stage at Code Conference directly after Spiegel and he joked: “Maybe that’s what Sheryl is announcing after.” [5]

Pew noted that the biggest change since its last teen survey, besides Facebook’s fall from dominance, was just how ubiquitous smartphones have become among young people. [35] Evan Spiegel couldn’t resist a dig at Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday over Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica crisis. [5]

Spiegel also addressed Snapchat’s recent– and controversial –redesign. [7]

In less than a year, Instagram Stories? boasted a comparable user base to Snapchat and effectively slowed Snapchat’s growth by over 80% contributing to its decline. [11] Previous reports have shown that users spend close to 35 minutes per day on Snapchat, compared to 32 minutes on Instagram (among younger users). [9] The average daily user spends over 40 minutes per day in the big blue app. For comparison, Snap says Snapchat users spend over 30 minutes per day. [36] Spiegel ultimately said that he thinks Snapchat will survive competitors copying the app, because while other platforms are forcing people to “compete with their friends for ‘Likes'”, Snapchat is focused on communicating with close friends. [8] Girls are more likely than boys to say Snapchat is the site they use most often (42% vs. 29%), while boys are more inclined than girls to identify Youtube as their go-to platform (39% vs. 25%). [13] In terms of lower-economic groups, the higher bandwidth requirements of YouTube and Snapchat are likely a factor here, but it is definitely worth considering in your targeting, while Snapchat has always been more popular among female users, another key note. [9]

Snapchat pioneered Stories in 2013 and it helped Snapchat grow incredibly fast during this period until 2016 when Facebook-owned Instagram rolled out its own version. [11] This was a significant finding as influencers and audiences alike rapidly migrated from Snapchat to Instagram. [11]

Snapchat is a unique social media platform that’s been designed to appeal to teenagers right from the start and it looks like this is paying off. [12]

With the implementation and focus of Stories and user-generated videos as a central sharing feature, Facebook was able to revitalize growth and engagement to a 14-year-old social media platform. [11] To successfully grow both its Stories use (and subsequently its total user base) and ad revenue, Facebook will need to find the right combination of Stories ad type (what types of ads perform well on Stories) and frequency (how often a user is served ads while viewing Stories). [11] To continue fueling its user growth (now upwards of two billion monthly active users) and attracting mobile-first younger demographics, Facebook in recent years has staked its growth strategy on a “video-first future” tied strongly to in-app camera use and activity la Stories. [11]

Even Snap, which has less than one-seventh the users of Facebook, grew its daily users just 15% year over year in the first quarter, compared to 13% for Facebook. [36] Facebook also owns Instagram, where 500 million daily users spend around another 30 minutes per day. [36] Facebook users, meanwhile, could reportedly spend up to 41 minutes per day in the app going on reported usage numbers, while YouTube’s data suggests people are spending over 30 minutes per day in app. [9] Facebook has 2.2 billion monthly users on its flagship app, and its still growing at a double-digit rate. [36] As part of its growth strategy, Facebook is enabling billions of users the functionality to be their own content creator simply from an in-app camera with built-in features and tools. [11] It has Facebook Watch, a video platform to rival YouTube, in which it’s investing up to $1 billion in content. [36] Is that a concern? Should Facebook be worried about this trend? The platform added around 70 million more active users in Q1 2018, so it’s still growing overall, but the operative figure missing, both from Facebook’s numbers and this report, is the actual amount of time spent, and the opportunities available to reach users on each platform. [9] Only around 10% of teens said Facebook was their most used platform – though those numbers do shift among certain economic and gender groups. [9] “Lower-income teens are far more likely than those from higher income households to say Facebook is the online platform they use most often (22% vs. 4%). [9] This is a significant shift from 2014-2015, when Facebook dominated social among teens. [13]

Spiegel said Facebook — whose name he repeatedly declined to utter — has failed to sufficiently overhaul its user privacy protections after the Cambridge Analytica scandal exploded earlier this spring. [8] Specifically, Spiegel is said to have “poured salt on the wound” during his 40-minute interview with Kara Swisher as he called out Facebook and its ongoing struggles with user privacy. [8]

GDPR forces Facebook to disclose to its users what data it collects and why and also puts limitations on that data, potentially impacting the effectiveness of its advertisements. [36] Facebook has also reached the limit on the number of ads it can show in News Feed before it has a negative impact on the user experience. [36] Advertisers from publishers put their (blind) faith in Facebook Ads once it became clear they were going to have to pay to get their content in front of Facebook’s newsfeed, but now they?re wondering if that was the right thing to do. [14] This Digiday piece claims Facebook’s biggest threat isn?t Cambridge Analytica, but rather advertisers questioning Facebook Ads ROI. [14]

From what we can tell, Facebook is not going to be the “world’s biggest social media platform” anymore. [12] Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes virtual reality is the next big computing platform after mobile, and it’s certainly well-positioned to take advantage of it. [36]

It’s certainly no YouTube killer, but Facebook is simply looking to expand into the active video consumption market. [36] It has always been difficult to share and promote podcasts on Facebook because Facebook favors video. [14]
