K-12 STEM education encompasses the processes of critical thinking, analysis, and collaboration in which students integrate the processes and concepts in real world contexts of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, fostering the development of STEM skills and competencies for college, career, and life. [1] The inclusion of hands-on learning activities in STEM education is paramount to facilitate student engagement. [2] Through STEM education, students learn to become problem solvers, innovators, creators, and collaborators and go on to fill the critical pipeline of engineers, scientists, and innovators so essential to the future of California and the nation. [1] California leads the world in STEM education, inspiring and preparing all of its students to seize the opportunities of the global society through innovation, inquiry, collaboration, and creative problem solving. [1] In my vision for the future of STEM education, students will continually be called upon to ponder real-world issues, like global warming or food shortages. [1] STEM educators will encourage students to explore global challenges and find solutions through science, technology, engineering, and math. [2]

Agriculture also falls hand in hand with STEM learning, whether it’s the science behind farming itself, engineering and programming new technology to increase the efficiency of farming, or developing the mathematical concepts necessary to help engineer the new technology, it’s clear that agriculture has a heavy involvement with STEM, making it necessary to “boost the lagging K-12 Ag education,” as Farm Futures put it. [3] “While applauding renewed interest in attracting young people to careers in science and technology, known as STEM disciplines, the paper also suggests that U.S. competitiveness would be well-served by linking food and Ag education to STEM programs,” according to Farm Futures. [3]

In addition to STEM involvement, there are four other ways to boost K-12 ag education that are outlined in the Farm Futures report. [3]

California County Superintendents Educational Services Association Science Subcommittee The Science Subcommittee provides collaborative leadership among county offices of education, California Department of Education, and science partners to improve achievement in science for all students and to close the achievement gap. [1] The second initiative began in response to California Education Code Section 53313, which specifies that the Superintendent shall develop a computer science strategic implementation plan for submission to the Legislature, if the plan is adopted by the State Board of Education, on or before July 15, 2019. [1]

Incorporation of science, engineering, technology, and mathematics as early as preschool will prepare children for more advanced subjects in later education. There are often many conversations about the tech, engineering and mathematical aspects of STEM learning which all contain aspects of science. [3] Students need to be encouraged to participate in STEM learning and pursue careers in the field. One charter school, Downtown College Prep (DCP) Alum Rock High, leverages motivational tactics, such as competitions to increase STEM interest. Informal science education is the science teaching and learning that occurs outside of the formal school curriculum in places such as museums, the media, and community-based programs. [20] How can you help promote equal and fair access to computer science education for all students and adequate preparation for teachers? The presenters in the “Policy Track” at the conference shared a ton of great information that everyone who cares about computer science education can use in their own advocacy efforts. [19] This leads to unequal and limited access to high-quality computer science education for both students and teachers. [19]

The learners may be children, college students, or adults within the general public; the field of science education includes work in science content, science process (the scientific method ), some social science, and some teaching pedagogy. [20] The standards for science education provide expectations for the development of understanding for students through the entire course of their K-12 education and beyond. [20] As in England and Wales, science education in Australia is compulsory up until year 11, where students can choose to study one or more of the branches mentioned above. [20] Concern about science education and science standards has often been driven by worries that American students lag behind their peers in international rankings. [20]

Examples of informal science education include science centers, science museums, and new digital learning environments ( e.g. Global Challenge Award ), many of which are members of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC). [20] Reports by the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), including Project 2061, and by the National Committee on Science Education Standards and Assessment detail goals for science education that link classroom science to practical applications and societal implications. The Center for Advancement of Informal Science Education (CAISE) provides resources for the informal science education community. [20] While the public image of science education may be one of simply learning facts by rote, science education in recent history also generally concentrates on the teaching of science concepts and addressing misconceptions that learners may hold regarding science concepts or other content. [20] Public opinion surveys, however, indicate most U.S. parents are complacent about science education and that their level of concern has actually declined in recent years. Infosys challenged attendees to brainstorm around the best use of effective computer science education as a driver for greater diversity, faster economic growth, and better preparation for 21st century careers. [19] As you can imagine, these people are incredibly passionate and opinionated about computer science education. [19] Nikki founded Zulama, a company that brings computer science education to teenagers through video game design. [19]

Although at the college level American science education tends to be less regulated, it is actually more rigorous, with teachers and professors fitting more content into the same time period. [20] Science education is given high priority and is driven by textbooks composed by committees of scientists and teachers. [20]

Amgen Foundation Grants fund projects to advance science education and strengthen communities in MA and RI. Amounts awarded and time periods of grants vary widely and depend upon the scope of the project. [6] In 2013 a new standards for science education were released that update the national standards released in 1996.
