[1] In 1999, Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services/payments company. [2]

When Musk was 20 years old and studying physics and economics at the University of Pennsylvania, he focused on five big ideas: the internet, sustainable energy, interplanetary travel, genetics and artificial intelligence. [1] Even Musk thought his idea was crazy, but as he noted, technology “only gets better if smart people work like crazy to make it better.” [1]

America once encouraged people like Mr. Musk, but today’s risk takers are few and far between. [3] In September 2017, Musk presented an updated design plan for his BFR (an acronym for either “Big Fing Rocket” or “Big Falcon Rocket”), a 31-engine behemoth topped by a spaceship capable of carrying at least 100 people. [2] In 2017, it was also revealed that Musk was backing a venture called Neuralink, which intends to create devices to be implanted in the human brain and help people merge with software. [2] Product is useful to other people and good for environment,” Musk tweeted on Thursday. [1]

Musk noted that the Hyperloop could take from seven to 10 years to be built and ready for use. [2] The boundless potential of space exploration and the preservation of the future of the human race have become the cornerstones of Musk's abiding interests, and toward these he has founded the Musk Foundation, which is dedicated to space exploration and the discovery of renewable and clean energy sources. [2] “When starting SpaceX, I thought the odds of success were less than 10 percent, and I just accepted that actually probably I would just lose everything,” Musk said. [1] “If somebody is doing something that is useful to the rest of society, I think that’s a good thing,” Musk told Y Combinator CEO Sam Altman in a 2016 interview. [2]

In late November 2017, after Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel asked for proposals to build and operate a high-speed rail line that would transport passengers from O'Hare Airport to downtown Chicago in 20 minutes or less, Musk tweeted that he was all-in on the competition with his Boring Company. [2] In November, Musk made another splash with the unveiling of the new Tesla Semi and Roadster at the company's design studio. [2] In an email to employees, Musk explained his decision to eliminate some “duplication of roles” to cut costs, admitting it was time to take serious steps toward turning a profit. [2]

Did You Know? In April 2017, Musk’s Tesla Motors surpassed General Motors to become the most valuable U.S. car maker. [2] “I thought the odds of a car company succeeding were extremely low.” [1] The Roadster, set to follow in 2020, will become the fastest production car ever made with its 0 to 60 time of 1.9 seconds. [2] Five years after its formation, in 2008, the company unveiled the Roadster, a sports car capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, as well traveling nearly 250 miles between charges of its lithium ion battery. [2]

Previously, Elon co-founded and sold PayPal, the world’s leading Internet payment system, and Zip2, one of the first internet maps and directions services, which helped bring major publishers like the New York Times and Hearst online. [8] At 10, around the time his parents divorced, the introverted Elon developed an interest in computers. [2]

Elon also founded and serves as CEO of The Boring Company, which combines fast, affordable tunneling technology with an all-electric public transportation system in order to alleviate soul-crushing urban congestion and enable high-speed long-distance travel. [8]

Additional successes include the Model S, the company's first electric sedan. [2] Despite such poor servicing of vehicles, Blue Book’s Karl Brauer believes that there has not been a big effect on the Tesla brand as early owners are not completely dependent on their Model S sedans and Model X SUVs. Dunne Automotive President, Michael Dunne, believes that the owners are well aware of such issues before buying a Tesla car as they know “they are part of this experience of the first breakthrough electric vehicles.” [4] Tesla builds electric powertrain components for vehicles from other automakers, including the Smart ED2 ForTwo electric drive (the lowest-priced car from Daimler AG), the Toyota RAV4 EV, and Freightliner’s Custom Chassis Electric Van. [4]

Autopilot might ultimately be a major selling point for Tesla, but Musk currently doesn’t have any way to meaningfully leverage it as a business, apart from telling Tesla owners that they could loan out their $80,000 car to strangers (the sometimes discussed but as-yet-unfounded “Tesla Network”). [5] The car was originally intended to be called the Model E, but after a lawsuit from Ford that holds the trademark on “Model E”, Musk announced on July 16, 2014 that the car would be called “Model 3” instead. [13] Musk also announced that the company would be involved in installing a solar-powered global network of the Tesla Megacharger devices to make the Semi more attractive to potential long-haul customers. [4] One Tesla shareholder had proposed the company replace Musk with an independent chairman of the board, but at the meeting, voters elected that Musk would retain the chairman spot he’s held since 2004. [6] Tesla has been around for 15 years and sold 100,000 vehicles last year — but it’s still a plucky startup that big auto wants to kill, Musk claims. [5] In December 2016, after a complaint sent to Musk via Twitter about abuse, Tesla announced that it will start charging an “idle” fee for vehicles that continue to occupy charging stations after they are fully charged. [4] In early November 2017, Musk advised investors of a production delay that was primarily due to difficulties with the new battery that would allow Tesla to significantly reduce the manufacturing cost of the Model 3. [4] Musk is good at resetting expectations, so despite the numerous Model 3 production failures, he’s now talking up all the new robot-rich Gigafactories that Tesla will build in China and Europe. [5]

The co-founder of PayPal, Musk is the chief executive of both Tesla Inc., the electric-car pioneer, and Space Explorations Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, which ferries cargo for NASA. He is admired and even idolized in Silicon Valley. [13] In 2008, both Tesla and SpaceX were days away from collapsing, and Musk was forced to borrow money from his friends. [13] “Tesla Model X delayed, again, but Musk says Model S demand remains high”. [4] That was also the year that SolarCity, the solar-energy pioneer Musk has since folded into Tesla, went public. [13] Musk wisely pushed Tesla in that direction — but in typical fashion, he needed a quickie fix that wouldn’t overwhelm Tesla’s R&D resources. [5] Musk was then the controlling investor in Tesla, providing the large majority of the US$7.5 million round with personal funds. [4] As of January 29, 2016, Musk owned about 28.9 million Tesla shares, or about 22% of the total. [4] Musk doesn’t like to be wrong, so he’s stuck to his guns when it comes to pitting Tesla against its competition and doubling down on various futuristic ambitions. [5] “This is … the most excruciating, hellish several months I’ve maybe ever had,” said Musk, adding that the same was true for “a lot of other people at Tesla … But I think we’re getting there.” [6] Musk keeps talking about bringing the Tesla to the masses, but he hasnt done it. [14] Tesla will also begin opening its own body shops across the country, and Musk hopes same-day repair will be possible in some locations. [6] Musk also put to rest hopes for a Tesla motorcycle, saying “we?re not going to do motorcycles”. A 62,000sqft (5,800m 2 ) European service center operates in Tilburg, Netherlands along with a 77,650m 2 (835,800sqft) assembly facility that adds drivetrain, battery and software to the (imported) car body to reduce EU import tax, Musk confirmed in June 2014 and November 2016 its long-term plans to build a car and battery gigafactory in Europe, which several countries have campaigned to host. [4] Musk is yet another power hungry leader who like his car, frankly bores me with his behavior. [14] Mr Musk does not simply want to have fun building rockets and fast cars. [14] Consumers with their eye on the cheaper version of the car — at $35,000, with a smaller battery pack — will have to wait until Q1 of 2019, Musk said. [6] The next car should be one everyone can afford, according to Musk. [4] The Model Y crossover, the Tesla semi truck and the new Roadster sports car should all reach consumers around 2020, Musk said, but he failed to specify when or how he’d begin production. [6]

Tesla has targeted a weekly production rate of 5,000 Model 3s by the end of June, but being able to build that many cars and actually building them are different things. [5] Tesla has pushed back production targets for the more affordable Model 3 sedan several times, testing the patience of customers who put down $1,000 deposits when the car was first revealed in March 2016. As of December2017, Tesla offers three car models: the Model S, Model X and Model 3. [4] On March 29, 2018, Tesla issued a worldwide recall of 123,000 Model S cars built before April 2016 due to corrosion -susceptible power steering bolts that could fail and require the driver to use “increased force” to control the vehicle. [4] Tesla is the only automaker that sells cars directly to consumers; all others use independently owned dealerships although many provide online configuration and financing. 48 states have laws that limit or ban manufacturers from selling vehicles directly to consumers, and although Tesla has no independent dealerships, dealership associations in multiple states have filed lawsuits over Tesla’s sales practices. [4] It has been instrumental in leading Tesla to a market cap that’s higher than those of established car companies that sell many more vehicles every year and post regular profits. (Tesla has never notched a year in the black.) [5] It is recommended to have any Tesla car inspected every 12,500 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. [4]

His biggest mistake was in not understanding that self-driving cars would both steal electric vehicles’ thunder and create a new business opportunity that Tesla couldn’t easily pursue. [5] Investors expressed concern about Tesla’s plans for execution and competitive risk, as Volvo Cars committed to introduce only electric and electric-assisted vehicles by 2019. [4] In May 2015, Tesla started selling refurbished Model S cars in the U.S. and within a month sold 1,600 cars. [4] In 2012, Tesla produced the all-electric Model S, a high-performance sedan which even skeptics in Detroit hailed as possibly the best car ever built. [5] In addition to maintaining the resale value, Tesla hoped to secure a supply of used cars to refurbish and re-sell with warranty. [4] In 2016 BYD Auto was the world’s top selling plug-in car manufacturer with 101,183 units sold, followed by Tesla with 76,243. In 2016, the company sold US$1 billion worth of cars in China, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, and in October of the following year it reached an agreement with the Chinese government to build a factory in Shanghai. [4] “Top Gear libel case over Tesla electric sports car struck out”. [4] The Land Transport Authority justified this by stating that it had to “account for CO 2 emissions during the electricity generation process” and therefore “a grid emission factor of 0.5g/watt-hour was also applied to the electric energy consumption”, however Tesla countered that when the energy used to extract, refine, and distribute gasoline was taken into account, the Model S produces approximately one-third the CO 2 of an equivalent gasoline-powered vehicle. [4] On January 7, 2010, Tesla and battery cell maker Panasonic announced that they would together develop nickel-based lithium-ion battery cells for electric vehicles. [4]

The Semi will be powered by four electric motors of the type used in the Tesla Model 3 and will include an extensive set of hardware sensors to enable it to stay in its own lane, a safe distance away from other vehicles, and later when software and regulatory conditions allow, provide autonomous operation on highways. “I think I do have an issue with time,” Musk said in response to a question about his particular brand of “Elon time.” [6]

In October 2015, Musk described a future “Model Y” that would be a full sized SUV utility vehicle aimed for families. [4] Musk wanted the first three models to spell “S-E-X”, but settled with “S3X” because Ford owns the trademark to “Model E”. [4] The wild concept was subsequently confirmed for production after the roll-out of the upcoming Model Y. Now, Musk has taken to Twitter to ask followers for possible feature suggestions – while also confirming some of the specs. [15] Musk said that the new model will have a range of 620mi (1,000km) on the 200 kWh battery pack and will achieve 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds; the top speed will be over 250mph (400km/h). [4]

During further investigation by the media, Musk said “the Model S battery never ran out of energy at any time, including when Broder called the flatbed truck.” [4] The company was having difficulties with robots on the assembly line but the most serious issue was with one of the four zones in the battery manufacturing, caused by a “systems integration subcontractor”, according to Musk. [4] Following this conversation, he introduced Musk to Tom Gage and Al Ciccone at AC Propulsion, a company that had built an all-electric concept sports car call the Tzero. [4] Musk said the company would achieve profitability in late 2018, specifically Q3 and Q4. [6] Musk said the company will debut a new version of its autopilot feature next week and continue to increase its reliability over the next six to 12 months. [6] Musk strongly defended Tesla’s safety record and argued that the company had made significant improvement. [4]

In April 2017 Musk predicted that in around two years drivers would be able to sleep in their vehicle. [4] At the company’s annual shareholder meeting in June 2018, Musk revealed Tesla’s intention to enter a new market segment, offering a compact hatchback in “less than five years”. [4] In October 2008, Musk became CEO and laid off an additional 25% of Tesla’s workforce. [4] Musk also led Tesla’s Series B US$13 million investment round and co-led the third, US$40 million round in May 2006. [4] At Tesla’s shareholder meeting on Tuesday, Musk went with a patient approach — a far cry from the tirades he’s made headlines for in recent months. [6] Musk wrote a lengthy blog post that included original source documents, including emails between senior executives and other artifacts attempting to demonstrate that Eberhard was fired by Tesla’s unanimous board of directors. [4] “Analysis – Sleepless nights, broken robots and mounting pressure: Musk offers rare glimpse inside Tesla’s ‘production hell ‘ “. [4]

In February 2017, Musk announced plans to build three additional Gigafactories to increase its battery manufacturing. [4] In 2016 Musk predicted 100,000 Model 3 units would be sold in 2017, but that production may reach only 20,000 by December. [4] In May 2018, Musk said that the Model Y will be built on a platform that shares many components with the Model 3 that will be in production at the earliest in early 2020. [4] In early October 2017, Musk had predicted that Model 3 production would be up to 5,000 units per week by December. [4]

Musk confirmed that the range would be 500 miles and that the zero to 60mph time would be 5 seconds versus 15 seconds for a similar truck with a diesel engine. [4] According to a Musk blog post, “New technology in any field takes a few versions to optimize before reaching the mass market, and in this case it is competing with 150 years and trillions of dollars spent on gasoline cars.” [4] Musk is brilliant but I would not call him visionary other than in terms of looking at technology (and we can command him for looking at technology in ways that helps rather than hurt the environment). [14]

Musk postponed the target date for manufacturing 5000 of the vehicles per week from December 2017 to “sometime in March” 2018. [4] At first Musk responded on Twitter, writing that the investors “should buy Ford stock” because “their governance is amazing.” [4] First revealed as a smaller version of the mighty Semi, Musk said that drivers with a regular license would be able to get behind the wheel of the pickup. [15]

A communication champion, Musk even sent his own roadster into space. [9] Asked about a new space race after the Falcon Heavy launch, Mr Musk was enthusiastic: “Races are exciting.” [14] In “The Complacent Class”, which laments lost entrepreneurial vigour, Tyler Cowen, an economist, cites Mr Musk as a counter-example, today’s “most visible and obvious representative of the idea of major progress in the physical world.” [14] We thrill at Musks ideas and marvel at his accomplishments. [14]

Musk was enthusiastic and encouraged Gage and Ciccone to put the Tzero concept into production. [4] Though Musk was unable to persuade AC Propulsion to mass produce the Tzero, Gage offered to give Musk’s contact information to two groups who did have such an interest, one of which included Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning (“Tarpenning”), and Ian Wright (“Wright”).”). [4] Musk is doing something different than the tide that carries with it the general flow of even the most influential and creative in business, like Bezos and Page. [14] Like the rest of us Musk presents normal (not exceptional) self awareness, self reflection, integrative/holistic thinking. [14] Musk likes to take shots at the traditional auto industry, using horribly clich David-versus-Goliath rhetoric that’s really beneath him but serves his purposes. [5]

The investors wrote that “five of six current non-executive directors have professional or personal ties to Mr. Musk that could put at risk their ability to exercise independent judgement.” [4] Musk could be used as a good example but not for so many of the items outlined in this article. [14] In May 2017, Musk indicated that he might favor a 10-12-passenger version of the Model X over a dedicated minibus design. [4]

Eberhard issued a statement about Musk’s foundational role in the company: “As a co-founder of the company, Elon’s contributions to Tesla have been extraordinary.” [4] Tesla has proven over the years that it is willing to listen to feedback from users, especially when they are on Twitter and Elon takes notice. [10] Back on the pavement, Elon shared that the Tesla truck will have the ability to parallel park automatically and come standard with 360 degree cameras and sonar. [10] Where Elon ends his tweet there with “Maybe they will even allow a Tesla to fly?” I?m going to come out and say no. [38]

I agree with Elon here: I think there’s some real handling improvements to be gained if you can exert controlled, specific force on part of the car at will. [38] As of July 2017, over 80 used Model S and Model X cars were for sale, with either a four-year, 50,000-mile warranty or a two-year, 100,000-miles warranty for vehicles above 50,000 miles. [4] Its top selling car is the Model S, with global sales of about 212,874 units between June 2012 and December 2017, followed by the Model X with about 72,059 units sold between September 2015 and December 2017. [4] With an estimated 50,931 units sold in 2016, the Model S ranked as the world’s best-selling plug-in car for the second year in a row. [4] Among other awards, the Model S won the 2013 ” Motor Trend Car of the Year “, the 2013 ” World Green Car “, Automobile Magazine’s 2013 “Car of the Year”, and Time Magazine Best 25 Inventions of the Year 2012 award. [4] Previously, the Model S had been the top selling new car four times. [4] Rental cars have better iPhone integration than a Model S. He has a number of things going on at the same time but cannot focus. [14]

I like the car even though the business model is a complete financial joke. [14] When a car model is brand new or “completely redesigned,” that can mean new parts, new systems–and new problems. [4]

Morningstar analyst David Whiston foresaw a revised, slower timetable for the Model 3 and a company acknowledgement of problems with building battery packs for its cars. [4] They are the playthings of wealthy, tech-savvy true believers — an important market for a company that has satisfied the enthusiasms of its core customers while being objectively pretty bad at actually building cars. [5]

I’ve driven hundreds of cars, ranging from subcompact econoboxes to Ferraris and Lamborghinis (as well as all of Tesla’s vehicles), and I can safely say that it’s insulting to deprive the people who have devoted their lives to automobiles of their souls. [5] Tesla’s entire narrative was centered in sexy all-electric cars until a couple of years ago when the big story shifted to autonomy. [5] The Model 3 (originally stylized as “?”) is Tesla’s third-generation car. [4] According to Automotive News, the profit margin on used car sales in the U.S. is about triple that on new cars, and Tesla’s direct sales would allow it capture resale profits. [4] “Tesla’s new batches of used cars are selling ludicrously fast”. [4]

Okay, so if we look at what Elon’s proposing here, with 10 small rocket thrusters arranged around the car, it’s clear he’s describing a reaction control system (RCS), just like what’s used on spacecraft to orient, maneuver, and position the craft in space. [38] Self-driving hardware in all cars, space tourism, reusable satellite launchers? His futuristic ideas sell dreams. [9] Putting RCS thrusters on a car is a fun idea, but also kind of a terrible idea, which is likely why I even ever thought about it. [38]

His first two tweets about the Tesla truck have already prompted more than 12,000 responses in just over an hour, including some ideas that are more obvious than others. [10]

Trucks are tools for most drivers and Elon’s request makes it clear that Tesla is intent on challenging the base use cases for trucks, not just those looking for a weekend toy. [10] These features come standard on all of Tesla’s vehicles today, so it’s clear that Elon is looking for input from those who live and die by the truck. [10] “Elon Musk just teased the Model Y in a tweet (which he immediately deleted)”. [4] An analyst with Cowan and Company commented that “Elon Musk needs to stop over promising and under delivering”. [4]

“Elon Musk’s growing empire is fueled by $4.9 billion in government subsidies”. latimes.com. [4]

This approach was likely strategic in calming investors after Musk’s headline tirades in recent months — a Twitter firestorm aimed at the press, calling investor questions “boring” and “bonehead ” on his company’s shareholder call, sparring online with Warren Buffett and an argument with officials investigating a deadly Tesla crash. [6] The company won’t offer electric motorcycles, partly due to Musk’s personal experience with a past motorcycle crash. [6] The battery and electric drivetrain technology for each model would be developed and paid for through the sales of earlier models. [4] As a vertically-integrated manufacturer, Tesla has had to master multiple technology domains, including batteries, electric motors, sensors and artificial intelligence. [4] Tesla cooperated on the development of electric vehicles, parts, and production system and engineering support. [4] Tesla began with a sports car aimed at early adopters followed by mainstream and mass market vehicles, all serving “as a catalyst to accelerate the day of electric vehicles”. [4] Cars are built and tested in Fremont; then, the battery pack, the electric motor and parts are disassembled and shipped separately to Tilburg, where they are reassembled. [4] All Model S cars manufactured after March 6 have the.25-inch (6.4mm) aluminum shield over the battery pack replaced with a new three-layer shield. [4] A total of 10,045 Model S cars were delivered globaly during the first quarter of 2015. [4] A total of 11,532 Model S cars were delivered globally during the second quarter of 2015. [4]

The plan with Model 3 has been to make a car that half of us can afford. [4] Since January 2018, the Model 3 has remained the top-selling plug-in passenger car in the U.S. each month. [4]

It includes more affordable cars produced in higher volume, solar-power roofs, mid-size vehicles, SUVs and pickup trucks, as well as the refinement of autonomous vehicles and the creation of a sharing economy, in which cars can be active while the owner is not using them. [4] He rehashed a familiar complaint about carmakers and their cars: that non-Tesla vehicles are the soulless output of bean-counters and marketing departments. [5]

Tesla’s cars were the future, so when the future became autonomous, of course they had to drive themselves. [5] Of course, I?m likely by no means the first to imagine this; here’s a game about racing cars on the moon from even before my article that describes RCS systems for lunar racing cars. [38] The 36kWh battery contains approximately 4,000 lithium-ion cells. 500 cars would be built for trial in Europe beginning in September 2011. [4] The car did not have enough power to move, or even enough to release the electrically operated parking brake.” [4] I?m not sure compressed air thrusters would provide the power needed to move a car and break the tires? friction against the road, but, to be fair, I haven?t done the math. [38]

Instead of plugging in the car, he drove in circles for over half a mile in a tiny, 100-space parking lot. [4]

“Tesla’s global fleet reaches over 5 billion electric miles driven ahead of Model 3 launch”. [4] The company supplies battery packs for Freightliner Trucks ‘ Custom Chassis electric van. [4] The table formed by TMC reveals that the electric vehicle (EV) company has received 30,027 Model X reservations worldwide. — The sedan was able to receive only 12,000 pre-orders ahead of its launch. [4] Calls for a solar panel tonneau cover for the truck bed sound more like an aftermarket niche product, but there is no denying that solar + electric vehicles could get in bed together in the future as the efficiency of solar panels continues to climb. [10] Tesla, Inc. (formerly Tesla Motors ) is an American multinational corporation that specializes in electric vehicles, energy storage and solar panel manufacturing based in Palo Alto, California. [4] Musk’s critical insight into electric vehicles was his major triumph; I’ll explain exactly what it was in a second. [5] At Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting on Tuesday, he at times struggled to control his emotions while still rocking a very chic Belstaff motorcycle jacket. (Musk’s fashionable jackets should have their own Twitter account.) [5] Musk’s supporters say he has built up enough credibility and has enough star power to raise money with relative ease or to be bailed out by one of his many ultrarich friends who share his aspirations. [13]

This is a man who had the idea that we should colonize Mars as a backup for humanity in case of global catastrophe, and so he built SpaceX, a profitable space exploration company that sent more rockets into space in 2017 than the rest of America and Europe combined. [14] The ideas at the heart of SpaceX and The Boring Company came from his realization that rocket launches and tunneling were both more expensive than physics required they should be. [14]

The Model X’s “falcon wing” doors have been a study in why gull-wing doors have always been a bad idea. [5] The internet’s truck ideas kind of go downhill from there with suggestions ranging from a dump bed to a refrigerator to flamethrowers. [7] It’s a crazy idea: Maybe you could use your mind and your life with the same creativity as one of the people with the craziest ideas in the world. [14] They have great ideas because they have mapped out the connections that make things work so many times that they can navigate possibilities better than the rest of us. [14]

The production results of the Model 3 at end of June 2018, will constitute a serious test for the supposed super-powers of Elon Musk? and may cause the fall of the man who had considered himself to be Iron Man. [9] How far away is that? To do that safely? Elon: That’s about two years. [4] At the rear of the truck, Elon shared that they are considering adding a 4 bar linkage that would allow the gate to drop down towards the ground. [10] Susan Rigmaiden, former environmental compliance manager, commented: “If someone said, “Elon doesn?t like something,? you were concerned because you could lose your job.” [4] Elon Musk’s attitude during the question-and-answer session of Tesla’s last earnings call on May 2 surprised and irritated. 4. [9]

The vehicle will have three electric motors allowing for all-wheel drive, and torque vectoring during cornering. [4] The electric motor was rated 136PS (100kW; 134hp) and 310N?m (229lb?ft), with a 36 kWh battery. [4]

Beginning in 2010 Panasonic invested US$30 million for a multi-year collaboration on next generation cells designed specifically for electric vehicles. [4]

For its part, Electrek said it would probably be smart to take the Model 3’s $28,000 production price “with a grain of salt,” in part because Musk has said that Tesla can’t, for now, build the car at a profit. [23] Musk did say that a big ramp-up in Model 3 production could end up dropping the car’s assembly price to a point where it would be very profitable for Tesla. [23]

In a previous op-ed after Musk said that Tesla doesn?t plan to unveil its electric pickup truck until the end of the decade, I argued that ” Tesla should unveil it and open reservations right away for the sake of the U.S. auto industry “. [16] When asked about a question about whether Tesla has any plans of making electric motorcycles, Musk categorically said that it’s not going to happen. [11]

Musk previously announced that if everything went according to plan with the 230-foot-tall rocket, he would send the rocket into space carrying a top of the line Tesla Roadster on a trek towards Mars. [21] That day, Musk tweeted video footage from the vehicle, showing a mannequin dressed in a space suit driving a Tesla Roadster inside the Falcon Heavy (shown below) which received more than 450,000 likes in 24 hours. [17] These were picked up by the internet and through the Bandwagon Effect Musk became one of the idolized people online, like Jobs, Tesla and some other. [22] After a very disappointing run up through 2008, Musk went from board member to CEO, even though he still served as CEO of SpaceX. Since that time, Tesla went public and saw its stock appreciate from just $19 per share in June 2010 to $344.78 per share as of June 13, 2018. [21] Musk confirmed the “Tesla Truck will have dual motor all-wheel drive with crazy torque and a suspension that dynamically adjusts for the load.” [16] On May 1st, 2015, the Tesla channel uploaded footage of Musk presenting the Tesla Powerwall rechargeable battery, which stores electricity for domestic use (below left). [17] The question was put forward at Tesla’s 2018 shareholder meeting when a member of the audience asked Musk if Tesla ever thought about getting into the motorcycle business. [11] According to a June 2018 SEC filing, Musk spent about $25 million on Tesla share on June 12 and 13. [21] Speaking at South by Southwest 2018, a music and technology festival, Musk said that Tesla is the only public security he owns. [21] Musk was not a founding member of the Tesla team, but he did lead an early round of financing in 2004. [21] On March 29th, Musk tweeted a recreation of the unicorn picture drawn on the Tesla sketch pad application (shown below). [17] That day, The Guardian published an interview with Edwards, who criticized Musk for using the unicorn artwork as an icon on the Tesla operating system and in a Christmas message. [17] The thrusters won?t actually combust, according to Musk; instead, they will expel highly pressurized cold air, giving the Tesla an extra boost in acceleration. [19]

Musk has also made clear his intentions to take not just cars, but humans to Mars by 2024. [21] Musk did say the car is not recommend for urban environments. [19]

This includes an accusation that Tesla shipped Model 3 cars with damaged batteries, something the company vehemently denies. [18] Right now, Tesla maintains it is on track to roll 5,000 Model 3 cars a week off its production line by the end of June. [23] Meanwhile his new Tesla Roadster can do 0 to 60mph in 1.9 seconds, making it the fastest production car ever built. [17] The car Yousafzai referred to is the Midnight Cherry Red Tesla Roadster that went up with Musk’s SpaceX launch Feb. 6. [12] For one, the Tesla Roadster already accelerates and brakes incredibly quickly, and the new Roadster is supposedly one of the fastest cars in the world, with a 0-60 time of 1.9 seconds. [19]

Tesla could combat this by blowing the bottles down more slowly, but then the thrusters won?t have as big of an impact on the car. [19] If the COPVs are going to have any significant force on the Tesla, they?ll also have a significant force on the cars surrounding the Tesla. [19] There are regulations in place about the amount of pass-by noise a car can have, and it’s doubtful the thruster-outfitted Tesla will meet those. [19]

Musk’s company had originally aimed for a weekly production run of 5,000 Model 3 cars by the end of last year, but failed to hit the target. [18]

At the unveiling of the Tesla Semi, which turned into the unveiling of the next Roadster, Musk also released the first image of a Tesla electric pickup truck pictured above though some people still think it’s a joke. [16] Musk claims that the air will be replenished in the COPVs using an electric pump, which would draw from the Tesla’s power pack. [19]

In June 2002, Musk founded the aerospace manufacturing company SpaceX. In 2004, Musk became a co-founder of Tesla Motors, leading the automotive and energy storage company’s Series A round of investment. [17] In July 2006, the energy service provider SolarCity was founded by brothers Peter and Lyndon Rive, who were inspired to create the company based on a suggestion from Musk. [17] In 1999, Musk co-founded the online financial services company X.com, serving as CEO of the company until October 2000. [17] Musk founded the tunnel construction “Boring Company” in late 2016. [21] The company launched in late 2010 with Musk as one of the key angel investors. [21] Musk no longer holds a stake in PYPL, having exited his position after eBay purchased the company for $1.5 billion worth of stock in 2002 — something Carl Icahn helped undo more than a decade later. [21] Musk struck buyout gold again with his artificial intelligence company DeepMind Technologies. [21] Musk continued to tweet about the company over the next few hours. [17]

Musk said that the dual motor powertrain is going to be standard, like it is with Model S and Model X, along with the dynamic suspension. [16] SpaceX has made space travel exciting again, and Musk is very open on social media with the company’s efforts to push space science forward, like landing a rocket upright onto a landing pad in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. [21] As he’s done with the proceeds from prior corporate acquisitions, Musk used most of his PayPal fortune to found Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, more commonly known as SpaceX. By most accounts, Musk sank $100+ million to get SpaceX off the ground in 2002. [21] Musk reportedly earned between $165 million and $175 million for his part — not a bad return on the $10 million Musk used to co-found X.com, the precursor to PayPal. [21]

In June 2009, Musk created the @elonmusk Twitter account, garnering upwards of 18.8 million followers in the next nine years. [17] Plans for the truck have been vague, but Musk has been mentioning the automaker’s intention to venture into pickup trucks for over 5 years. [16] While it sounded like a joke, Musk had previously mentioned his intention to leverage work on the Tesla Semi to create a Tesla pickup truck. [16]

The COPVs that Musk wants to use are upgraded ones certified for the Falcon 9 rockets that will carry crews to the International Space Station. [19] Specifically, Musk is talking about incorporating a key piece of hardware from SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket — a tank known as a composite overwrapped pressure vessel, or a COPV. These bottles are made out of a thin metal liner that’s wrapped in carbon fibers, and they?re a great way to store a lot of pressurized air in a very small space. [19] Musk sent his most powerful rocket yet, the Falcon Heavy, on its first test flight on February 6th, 2018. [21] Musk later tweeted that the Boring Company’s first tunnel under LA was almost complete, and also published a time-lapse video of a round-trip through the tunnel on Instagram. [21]

On June 26th, 2018, Thomas’ daughter tweeted a link to an article about Tesla’s use of the artwork along with the message “hey y?all Grimes? boyfriend ripped off my dad’s art!” Musk responded by noting that the sketch pad drawing was created by someone else, claiming “we gained no financial benefit.” [17] On December 16, 2017, Musk announced he had sold 42,000 Boring Company hats and raised $840,000. [21] In May 2018, Musk announced on Twitter that The Boring Company had established a partnership with the Los Angeles Metro to work on an experimental tunnel under the city. [21] Musk has hopes that The Boring Company, which has projects in various states in Los Angeles, Hawthorne, the East Coast, and Chicago, will be the key to unlocking hyperloop travel, one of Musk’s passions. [21] For just $500, Musk offered fans the ability to unleash their inner supervillian with the Boring Company Flamethrower, which netted the company over $7.5 million in just a few days. [21] After hitting his goal of 50,000 hats sold, Musk began selling the next branded Boring Company product; a flamethrower. [21]

In 2004, Musk attended the Burning Man festival in Nevada, where he originally thought up the idea for SolarCity. [17] Expect Musk to earn a huge sum if SpaceX is ever taken public. [21] Then I had a road bike until I was 17 and was almost killed by a truck,” Musk said. [11] What separates Musk from other CEOs and inventors is his willingness to take risks. [22] Musk still owns a controlling interest, which means his share is worth far more than the $100 million he originally invested. [21] As of February 2018, Musk also maintains the @elonmusk Instagram with 5.3 million followers. [17]

Musk has said what he learned from gaining that visibility was enough to change his way of thinking about all his ventures, including furthering his plans to colonize Mars in case humans need to escape Earth due to a robot uprising. [21]

With growing interest in the electric motorcycle space, with even big brands like Harley-Davidson entering the segment, it’s not just Tesla’s loss, but more so for the consumer to not have an electric motorcycle with a brand like Tesla. [11] In November of 2017, Tesla announced the creation of fully electric semi-trucks, which are set to hit the road in 2019. [21] Expertise from Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and General Electric boards the Tesla boat. [12]

That’s what the Electrek blog, which reports on the electric, autonomous vehicle and clean car industry, says. [23] The process of making an electric motorcycle and developing it while reacting to the rapidly changing battery technology would have been much easier than making a car, for instance, which will need to be repeatedly made to go through stringent crash tests with any change in structural design. [11]

In 2013, French car manufacturers Peugeot and Citro”n announced plans to build a hybrid vehicle that used pressurized air as a source of energy, though the development has been put on hold. [19] Some automobiles use COPVs, too: buses and trucks use them for storing compressed natural gas, and cars with hydrogen fuel cells also rely on COPVs. But the air inside these tanks is used as fuel for the motors inside these cars. [19] Image: NASA Many car manufacturers have looked at ways to use compressed air to power vehicles, though. [19]

The cars currently coming off the assembly line have been said to cost closer to $50,000, due to extras and technological bells and whistles that lift the Model 3’s price nearer to the luxury-car level. [23] The air has the potential of sending fast-moving debris at a nearby car or even pushing on surrounding vehicles. [19] Commercial cars have never used COPVs this way before, and the idea raises a lot of questions about safety and efficiency. [19] The car has a 200 kilowatt-hour battery, a 620-mile range, and 7,375 pound-feet of torque. [12] Experts argue that could significantly drain the battery voltage needed to drive the car. [19]

On Oct 28, 2016, the Tesla channel uploaded Musk’s unveiling of the Tesla Powerwall 2 and new Tesla Solar Roof products (below right) which received 1.4 million views and 17,000 likes in 2 years. [17] An abbreviated list of Musk’s best investments includes PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: PYPL ), SpaceX, DeepMind (NASDAQ: GOOGL ), Tesla Inc. ( TSLA ), and The Boring Company. [21]

In the description of the page, he wrote, “Elon Musk is transforming our world to run on sustainable energy and use sustainable forms of transportation. [17] Elon Musk’s OpenAI bot beat a human at video games last year. [23]

To be fair, there are other electric pickup trucks in the work from other companies, but I think that due to Tesla’s historical results with the Model S, Model X, and Model 3, it will likely have a better impact coming from them. [16] Pickups are the profit centers for all the American automakers and by showing that there’s demand for electric versions of those trucks, like Tesla’s reservation process did with the Model 3, it would jump-start efforts to electrify their own truck programs. [16]

Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the advent of electric transport (and now renewable energy). [16] The famed entrepreneur has taken on electric sports cars, solar power, and space travel all at once–a risk well taken judging by the success of all his businesses. [20]

Electrek cited the German magazine WirtschaftsWoche, which said it spoke with German engineers who had completed a teardown of the Model 3 and who determined that the car’s materials and logistics costs come to $18,000, with another $10,000 coming from the labor required to build the vehicle. [23]

After launching at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Musk’s first-generation red Roadster ended up in orbit on its way toward the Sun and eventually Mars. [12] I noticed that one of Musk’s agents had incorporated Pravda Corp in California back in October last year. [17] Several media outlets covered and criticized Musk’s announcement, including, The Washington Post, Business Insider, Fobes, The LA Times and more. [17]

Image: SpaceX Still, the idea does bring many safety issues to mind. [19] The basic idea behind The Boring Company is that traffic is awful, and why travel above ground when there’s miles and miles of unused earth beneath us. [21] Some of his ideas are excellent, but does this warrant that he’s the only CEO being spoken about? I don?t think so. [22]

The Boring Company plans for the trip to take approximately 12 minutes each way, compared to the 40 minute trip via the city’s Blue Line, by using electric vehicles that run through new underground tunnels. [21]

If Tesla can?t figure out how to make more cars soon, it could open a lane for rivals from Detroit and overseas to establish the high-volume market for a $35,000 electric car–one that Tesla has had in its sights from its very beginning. [25] “Apart from me leading the Series A & B and co-leading the Series C, my influence on the car itself runs from the headlights to the styling to the door sill to the trunk, and my strong interest in electric transport predates Tesla by a decade. [28] As the pick-up market continues to swell worldwide – without making great strides environmentally, compared to the rest of the car industry – a Tesla offering fully electric drive and people-pleasing unique features could be a canny tactic from the Californian start-up. [39]

Most of the cars Tesla sells today are priced to compete with luxury models made by Mercedes, BMW and Porsche. [25]

Musk went on to the confirm the truck will have a six-seater cabin, and that, thanks to “more space for batteries? than a conventional car, he would aim for a “400-500 mile ?. [39] “All parts of the Model 3 production system are now above 500 and some are almost at 700 cars already,” Musk said in the email, which was obtained by CNBC. [24]

Tesla also spent heavily on infrastructure to mass produce vehicles; “Purchases of property and equipment excluding capital leases” grew from $11.9 million in 2009 to over $3.4 billion in 2017, averaging 143% YoY. The good news is revenue grew at a similar pace of 95.8% over the same time period; Mr. Musk has been spending money as fast as he makes it. [28] At a recent question-and-answer session in Los Angeles, Musk also said the company’s boring machines would have three times the power and would run on Tesla batteries without the expense of miles of high voltage cables that other machines use. [30] Musk must therefore greatly enjoy having a cult following; that alone should keep him working at Tesla and SpaceX for a really long time. [28] Musk himself called SpaceX and Tesla the ” dumbest things ” from a business standpoint. [28] Last Tuesday, Musk announced that Tesla would lay off about 9% of its workforce, though he said production jobs would not be affected. [24] Musk fumed when Eberhard was presented as the face of Tesla in their 2006 Roadster campaign, while he was referred to as an “investor”. [28] Over the next two days, Musk bought about $25 million in Tesla stock, according to an SEC filing. [24] What some of us may have forgotten is that Tesla wasn’t founded by Musk. [28]

While the concept of a self-driving tram or vehicle is not new, the particular model Boring envisions — based on a modified Tesla Model X car chassis — still has to be built on a large scale. [30] In 2006 Tesla introduced its first car, the Roadster, which could travel 245 miles (394 km) on a single charge. [27]

That plan only works if the company can figure out how to make exponentially more cars. [25]

In 1999 Zip2 was bought by the computer manufacturer Compaq for $307 million, and Musk then founded an online financial services company, X.com, which later became PayPal, which specialized in transferring money online. [27] Musk claimed that the Hyperloop would cost only $6 billion and that, with the pods departing every two minutes on average, the system could accommodate the six million people who travel that route every year. [27] The mayor said he “dealt with him in the past when I was in the White House” and has spoken with Musk at different times but it had been four or five years since they last talked. [30] Mr. Musk has been consistently leading those efforts for more than 15 years. [28]

Boring’s interest became real when Musk tweeted in November that the company would compete for the Chicago project. [30] In addition to being CEO of SpaceX, Musk was also chief designer in building the Falcon rockets, Dragon, and Grasshopper. [27] Musk sought to reduce the expense of spaceflight by developing a fully reusable rocket that could lift off and return to the pad it launched from. [27]

Speaking of power, Musk is also thinking of using the truck as a mobile power station “on-site?. [39] The Tribune previously reported how emails to Emanuel showed that a May 2017 political power lunch between the mayor and a Chicago private equity investor served as the catalyst for talks between Musk and the city. [30]

They toured the facility, saw a test vehicle run down a track and met with Musk. [30] In an email to Emanuel, Gracias said Musk thought a tunnel to O?Hare was “feasible and is interested in discussing the idea. [30] Today, the Tesla founder and interplanetary firework enthusiast has started crowdsourcing ideas for a new Tesla pick-up truck, to join the ranks of the Model S, Model X, Model 3 and the mooted upcoming Model Y EVs. [39]

Musk’s Boring Co. (get it?) has developed technology that drills tunnels faster and cheaper than conventional tunneling, operating on Tesla batteries and negating the need for mileslong electric cables to power the boring machine. [40] This video offers a conceptual look at The Boring Company’s loop technology, which would transport up to 16 passengers at a time on self-driving electric vehicles called “skates,” built on a Tesla chassis. [40]

Tesla is making auto manufacturers play catch up in electric powertrain. [28] His electric vehicle startup, Tesla, outpaces Ford and GM in market capitalization. [40]

When Musk revealed the Tesla Semi tractor unit back in 2017, he also announced: “We created a pickup truck version of the Tesla Semi. [39] Musk further announced development of a second Gigafactory in Shanghai at the latest shareholder meeting. [28]

Musk also said Boring would build the tunnels? concrete shells as it continues to dig and was working with “first-rate” engineers to find ways to remove dirt faster. [30] Musk, who Forbes estimates has a net worth of $20 billion, founded Boring in late 2016 to “solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic.” [30] The concept Musk and Boring envision for Chicago, however, is more basic and simply dubbed “Loop.” [30] The “skates,” as Musk and others call them, would be able to reach top speeds of 150 mph in the tunnels? straight stretches while speeds would be reduced around curves, according to Boring. [30]

Musk stayed engaged in the Twitter discussion he introduced in the afternoon, teasing about such features as “crazy torque” and a “special built-in sensor” in a pickup not set for production until 2019. [29] Musk reportedly sent an email to staff congratulating them on their efforts, but said “radical improvements” still need to be made to reach their production goal. [24]

Dissatisfied with the projected cost ($68 billion) of a high-speed rail system in California, Musk in 2013 proposed an alternate faster system, the Hyperloop, a pneumatic tube in which a pod carrying 28 passengers would travel the 350 miles (560 km) between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 35 minutes at a top speed of 760 miles (1,220 km) per hour, nearly the speed of sound. [27]

Boring officials stress the vehicles are “confined” and will “not be a car on auto drive.” [30] Find compact cars, subcompact cars, family sedans, luxury cars, sportscars, exotics, hybrids SUVs, trucks and crossovers for sale in your area. [26] It’s a crude way to track the rollout because not all VINs are produced sequentially, deliveries can be delayed, and even the most enterprising Model 3 sleuths will inevitably miss some newly released cars. [25] Forgive Chicagoans if they?re skeptical of financing promises — and of bullet cars speeding underground when that technology remains unproven. [40]

The Model S has been a hit since day one, and the forthcoming Model 3 will provide a more affordable electric sedan. [26] This is the price of being at the forefront of electric vehicle technology. [28]

With skepticism, though, comes encouragement: Musk’s idea is innovative, at a time when cities must innovate in order to prevail against cutthroat economic competition from metropolises worldwide. [40] Gracias, who with his wife has given $72,700 to the mayor’s campaign, told the Tribune then that he’s not an investor in Boring and that his “sole motivation was to help (Emanuel) with ideas to improve Chicago.” [30] Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas, Bloomberg quickly and accurately delivers business and financial information, news and insight around the world. [25]

Musk added that “there are a long list of organizations that want Tesla to die,” and named a rogue’s gallery of potential enemies including “Wall Street short-sellers,” “oil & gas companies,” and “the multitude of big gas/diesel car company competitors.” [37] Then, in March 2017, Musk tweeted an image of the same unicorn, apparently created on Tesla’s sketch pad, an easter egg hidden within the new software update for Tesla cars.
