He currently works with the European Union to develop the next generation of Energy Passes (Cards) for residential and commercial buildings. [7] Buildings account for 40% of the energy consumption in the U.S., residential buildings for 20%. [14] Massachusetts? Baker-Polito Administration recently announced their intention on becoming the first state in the nation to require residential energy scores. [14]

Local governments and municipalities are responding to the trend with Climate Action Plans that include reducing vehicle emission through renewable energy, increasing public transportation and use of electric vehicles. [3] Those include utilities and associated energy vendors making sure that efficiency metrics are easily processed and managed through the right data systems that can capture both asset information in the form of wall, insulation, window and attic metrics, versus the operational information of gas and electric heating and cooling systems. [5] For several years, Fraunhofer CSE has been working with the U.S. Department of Energy, through its SunShot initiative, and other stakeholders on approaches to lowering the cost of installing solar PV, including a "Plug and Play PV" approach designed to reduce the installed cost of solar to $1.50 per kilowatt by 2020, about half of today's average price. [2] In addition to the renewable energy that these panels create, they also improve the energy efficiency of the building by lowering roof temperatures to reduce AC demand." [15] Energy efficiency scorecards are a work in progress but interest is building up more rapidly as stakeholders realize the potential for an accurate and easy to digest system for the performance of homes everywhere. [5] Energy efficiency scorecards that rate the efficiency of a home, from the insulation of windows, to the efficiency of heating and cooling systems have existed in some form or another in several U.S. States. [5] Panelists will include energy scorecard authorities from the U.S. Department of Energy, Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, the City of Boston, and Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships. [7]

The event kicks off with a presentation by Hans Erhorn, Head of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Indoor Climate at Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (Fraunhofer IBP) in Stuttgart, Germany. [7] Initiatives in the area are nascent and the industry is in the early stages of developing comprehensive standards for exactly what should be measured, how it should be reported, and how best to integrate those results in the home buying process from the perspective not just of energy efficiency advocates but also from that of the real estate industry. Adopting renewable energy on a grand scale is a monumental task that requires next-generation technologies born out of breakthrough discoveries that push the boundaries in materials science, chemistry and engineering. [19] This finding resonates with our observations that most community energy activities emerge either in more affluent areas, or in lower-income areas where there are intermediary organisations who are engaged in community energy activities. [8] This became clear through workshop activities, such as asking participants to collectively draw a map of our energy system, which revealed that there was more latent knowledge of how the system works than first impressions might suggest. [8] The opportunity to discuss how the energy system works also led to people finding out more about local energy histories and stories in their own time. [8] The notion that communities could, for example, collectively own energy generation facilities was entirely absent. [8] This suggests that the issue of climate change would not be a motivating factor for these communities to engage with energy issues; focusing on the message of "reducing wastage? would be more salient. [8] Using messaging which links to "energy justice? themes could prove useful for engaging people in energy activities in these communities. [8]

What happens to low income households whose energy bills suddenly increase? When, for example, prices rise dramatically or there's a change in circumstances such as an elderly relative living at home. [8] This reminds us that for low income households energy behaviour interventions shouldn?t be solely focused on energy reduction but rather on smarter behaviours that improve the condition of their homes, such as draughtproofing, and reducing damp, and on income maximisation, for example through ensuring households are accessing available financial support. [8]

The mission of the AEC is to assist Amesbury residents, businesses, and city government in reducing energy consumption and costs through conservation, increased energy efficiency, and conversion to renewable energy sources.
