San Francisco has purchased its first three ‘Vision Zero’ street sweepers. [1] This project will also include various Vision Zero pedestrian upgrades, including new ADA curb ramps for accessibility at all intersections along this section of Lincoln Drive, as well as an asphalt walking path that will extend north of Wissahickon Avenue between Lincoln Drive and Rittenhouse Street. [2] The Vision Zero concept has been met with some controversy in other cities, which found adding new signs and lowering speed limits still did not eliminate the problem of distracted drivers or pedestrians and bicyclists who don’t follow the law. [3] Portland, Ore., has begun dispensing lawn signs to residents as part of that city’s Vision Zero effort. [4] As Vision Zero unfolds, the city expects to spend more money on traffic law enforcement and more on traffic signals. [4] Vision Zero starts with a radical change of nomenclature: There is no such thing as a traffic accident, Vision Zero says. [4] Injuries from crashes are, according to the Vision Zero view, a case of “traffic violence” that undermines the health of the surrounding community. [4] According to the Vision Zero webpage, “Traffic fatalities in New York have indeed fallen significantly, from 701 in 1990, to 381 in 2000, to an all-time low of 249 in 2011. [5] Harrisburg aims to adopt a Vision Zero plan by the end of 2018. [3]

Cambridge has adopted a Vision Zero policy and begun installing protected bike lanes to address the public safety epidemic that exists on our streets. [7] It was the first Bay Area city, in 2014, to declare itself a Vision Zero city with a goal of zero traffic deaths within 10 years. [8] Admittedly, it’s not quite an equivalent of Vision Zero ‘s sweeping objective of eliminating pedestrian fatalities altogether by the mid-2020s. [9] Behind the Numbers : Data drives Vision Zero — but an obsession with statistics can leave the people it affects behind. [9]

[10] Each year, hundreds of accidents take place between motor vehicles and street sweepers. [10] With varying configurations, dependent upon the OEM and design, street sweepers tend to have inconsistent blind spots and safety issues. I read about this four years ago on Bike Portland: Portland buys a new, bike path-sized street sweeper (and Seattle was supposed to buy one, too, but I don’t think that ever happened: Seattle Bike Blog: Seattle will purchase skinny bike lane sweeper machine ). [13] PBOT apparently already owns such a narrow street sweeper, as ODOT learned when they proposed a similar bike lane for Powell. [12] Once again, working with Athens was a complete pleasure! I received countless compliments on Athens? gorgeous compost, and your street sweeper left the parking lot clean enough to eat of off (the Eclectic Music Festival was grateful for that). [14]

A public safety meeting will be held tomorrow to discuss a planned road diet on Temple Street in Echo Park and Historic Filipinotown; the Vision Zero project would reduce the street to one lane in each direction, with bike lanes and a center turn lane. [15] The quasi-governmental body defeated a motion to reject the Venice Great Streets project and return the street to its previous six-lane configuration, before voting 10-1 to support Vision Zero and a six-month reassessment of the project. [15] He formed Families for Safe Streets and why he came to a New York City Department of Transportation community meeting in Queens Tuesday night to try to make sure the next phase of the Queens Boulevard Vision Zero program moves forward. The 24th Ave so-called “Vision Zero” project has cut essentially all the safety and transit improvements despite finding a significant history of collisions on that street. [17]

It’s also hard to imagine Vision Zero succeeding if he won?t listen to the concerns of the people in his district, and take concrete steps to improve safety for everyone. [15] The Excelsior Action Group (EAG) was recently awarded a grant to support the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Community Health Equity and Promotion (CHEP) Branch on the Safe Speeds San Francisco Campaign, an initiative of Vision Zero San Francisco. [18] San Francisco officials and advocates discuss the city’s progress on Vision Zero. [15] Nor should it mean abandoning the city’s Vision Zero plan or the multi-agency One Center City plan for downtown. [17] Several other committee members supported Galisatus? suggestion to recommend adoption of a Vision Zero policy, which Jessica Manzi, senior transportation manager, said would likely be required to be reviewed by the City Council at a later date. [19] Of course, that doesn?t fit with the NIMBY narrative that Vision Zero and road diets are the work of Satan himself. [15]

Mar 19, 2018 The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is mounting a major advocacy effort to influence the Valencia designs and make sure they result in a safe, bike-and-ped-friendly street. [1] The sweepers spray water on the street, with no detergents, and suck it back up into a tank. [1] “In designing complete streets, we need to make sure they are maintained,” added McGuire. [1]

These new sweepers, as pictured above, are smaller than normal and have nimble, movable brushes to enable the machines to sweep up San Francisco’s fifteen miles of protected bike lanes. [1] The sweepers fill their clean-water tanks from fire hydrants, which enables them to stay in the field all day. [1] The sweepers are capable of going 30 mph, said Larry Stringer, deputy director of operations for Public Works. [1]

Load-All Truck Load-all trucks transport trash to the City landfill, which allows sweepers to continue cleaning with minimal lost time for travel. [6] “No Parking signs” – City crews will post “No Parking” signs at least 24 hours before sweeping any streets. [20] SDOT plans and carries out long term paving plans and keeps our streets and sidewalks clear and safe on a daily basis through multiple programs and oversight of city rules. [21] The city has become nationally and internationally recognized as a leading innovator in safe street designs.” [5] New York City has taken the initiative to decrease traffic fatalities and injuries on the city’s streets. [5] Traffic engineers will continue reducing the number of lanes on some streets, such as J Street in midtown, which will go from three lanes to two this summer in midtown. [4] The project also includes traffic improvements, such as traffic signal mast arms and poles, at all five signalized intersections along this section of Lincoln Drive and at the intersection of Rittenhouse Street & Wissahickon Avenue. [2] We prioritize paving based on street pavement condition, traffic volume, geographic equity, cost, and opportunities for grants or coordination with other projects in the area. [21] Streets Department is committed to deploy tools, to effectively calm traffic. [22] Streets Department is committed to provide fully accessible, multimodal, safe and efficient movement of all modes of transportation, including pedestrians & bicyclists. [22] Streets Department has been mandated to protect these most vulnerable of all road users, the pedestrians, especially disabled, children & elderly, and bicyclists. [22] “The problem with pedestrians and bicyclists on certain roads, like Front Street, for example, is there is a disparity in the speeds that they are traveling,” Martin said. [3]

It will build separated bike lanes and add pedestrian safety islands in the middle of busy streets. [4] That change will slow drivers down, make room for a separated bike lane and make it easier for pedestrians to cross the street. [4]

SDOT staff restripe crosswalks, lane markings and other painted surfaces on the streets so people understand the purpose of each section of pavement. [21] SDOT’s Pavement Engineering and Management Section assesses the condition of our streets and determines where to allocate our finite funding to repair streets across the city. [21] Parking will be banned from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the day a street is swept. [20] The map may be updated, so please check back just prior to your scheduled day; or if you think your street was not swept as scheduled. [20] A few other streets, such as parkways and downtown streets, may be swept on days not included in the lookup. [20] Because of their heavy use, downtown streets are swept every night, and alleys are cleaned five nights a week. [21] The schedule is color-coded to enable you to easily identify when your street will be swept. [20]

If word needs to get out to the regular person on the street, lawn signs may be the way. [4] Some of the signs say “20 is Plenty,” a reference to that city’s new speed limit on residential streets. [4] We also create signs such as street signs, stops signs, speed limit signs, etc. and replace signs as appropriate. [21]

PHILADELPHIA – Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced an update on the construction schedule for the Lincoln Drive Restoration Project. [2] Martin says speed is one of the things causing issues in Harrisburg, like the area on North Front Street that ABC27 highlighted in a report earlier this month. [3] Please note that if the community, or the residents, or the local Councilperson have a change of heart for any reason, and request Streets Department to remove these speed cushions, they shall be fully responsible for all the costs associated with this install & subsequent removal. [22] Since speeding is mostly the underlying cause in most of our crashes, it is a top priority of Streets Department to slow down vehicles. [22] The Streets Department thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming construction phase. [2]

Each spring and fall, Public Works crews sweep every mile of the City’s more than 1,100 miles of streets – curb to curb – to help keep our neighborhoods clean and livable and to protect our waterways. [2] We also keep the streets open and serviceable during and after all types of emergencies such as landslides and snow storms. [21]

SDOT street maintenance crews maintain the areas that are adjacent to public property, as well as trim vegetation that blocks the site line of drivers, presenting a potential hazard. [21] SMD crews clean up spills in the street and respond to requests by Seattle Public Utilities (SPU). [21]

Beginning the week of May 14, night time closures are anticipated between Wissahickon Avenue and Wayne Avenue to allow for the installation of a new sewer at Harvey Street. [2] Street Maintenance crews sweep major arterials on a regular basis, ranging from daily to every two weeks, depending on the need. [21]

Recology American Canyon provides bi-weekly street sweeping for the City of American Canyon. [23] Street sweeping usually takes about four weeks to complete. [20]

Those crashes helped prompt the city last year to launch a campaign it calls “Vision Zero,” a 10-year effort with the stated goal of eliminating all pedestrian, bicyclist and motorist fatalities by 2027. [4]

Protected bicycle lanes are widely accepted and mainstream practice for streets with high volumes of vehicles and bikes, and have been proven to reduce speeding, result in higher numbers of new bicyclists, and will help the city achieve the mode shift necessary to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in our neighborhoods according to NACTO. [7] City staff have been extremely responsive and moved quickly to make several adjustments to both the new protected lanes based on feedback from businesses, including new parking on side streets and expanded loading zones. [7] We?re calling on the city to install at least 4 miles of pop-up protected bike lanes each year until the city-wide protected network is complete and to install permanent protected bike lanes when the streets specified as part of the city-wide protected network are reconstructed. [7] While no singular design exists for a complete street, it generally includes features such as protected bike lanes, narrower intersections, and driving lanes, and more visible pedestrian crossings. [24] Grand Street Study: We have hired an outside consultant to help us evaluate opportunities to improve pedestrian safety, traffic flow, and our bike lane connections between different neighborhoods along the Grand Street corridor. [24] Bump outs, like those used adjacent to Berry Lane Park, serve to keep vehicles from parking or driving too close to crosswalks and pedestrian areas, and narrow the distance required for pedestrians to cross a street. [24] Vehicles responding to a call can also safely run over the flexposts in the new lanes to get around traffic and move down the street. [7] The new lanes have been demonstrated to accommodate all emergency apparatus that Cambridge uses and they are no different than any of the other narrow streets in the City. [7] The working group will also partner with groups such as Bike JC and Safe Streets JC to collaborate with communities across the city. [24] Bicycle Master Plan: A Request For Proposals (RFP) was released on January 30 for a consultant to design this plan, and in the Spring of 2018, the City will begin working with an external consultant to develop a bicycle master plan with the goal of creating a city-wide bicycle network that expands upon the existing network and improves cycling safety, connectivity, and desirability on our streets. [24] A report of the findings was finalized in April 2018, containing design, engineering and policy solutions to increase safety and improve the street for all users. [24]

Crossing Guards: Intersections with high volumes of pedestrians and also those near schools are assigned additional personnel to assist with ensuring pedestrian safety while crossing busy streets. [24] Montgomery Street Corridor: Montgomery Street is a busy thoroughfare for cars, bikes, pedestrians, and buses. [24] Our streets must be made safe for everyone — for ourselves, our children, our friends, our neighbors, and in the name of those pedestrians, bicyclists, and occupants of cars who have tragically lost their lives on our city’s streets. [7] Bay Area streets and highways are not only getting busier, they’re becoming deadlier, particularly for bicyclists and pedestrians. [8] “The lanes only help bicyclists” – Protected bike lanes have been consistently shown to make streets safer for all road users. [7] A Protected Bike Lane or PBL is a portion of a street or sidewalk dedicated to bicycle use with a barrier between the bike lane and the vehicle travel lane. [24]

This is an example of the type of signs PBOT uses to warn people who park on the street. [25] Anyone who parks a car on the street in Leaf Day service zones with towing — whether they live, work or shop there — needs to be on the lookout for “no parking” signs. [25] Any cars on the street during Leaf Day in these neighborhoods will be towed at their owners’ expense. [25]

Notably, Philip Alston, the U.N.’s special rapporteur for extreme poverty and human rights, visited an encampment at San Bruno and Division streets at the southern edge of SoMa with his entourage in early December, and mere hours later, the Department of Public Works swept it not once but twice in advance of a photo-op the following morning with the mayor and several department heads, ostensibly to thwart embarrassing headlines. [9] The Department of Public Works sweeps and flushes the city’s streets. [26]

San Francisco is not the only city grappling with the presence of tents on its streets and sidewalks. [9] Our emergency responders are professionals and are trained to drive on our narrow city streets. [7] The city has made physical changes to streets, crossings and sidewalks, engaged in education campaigns, and stressed enforcement on the deadliest behaviors and on the most dangerous streets. [8]

Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall: We have successfully replaced a two-lane section of Newark Avenue with a pedestrian-friendly public gathering space, blocks from the Grove Street PATH station downtown. [24] Pedestrian Enhancement Plan: We have hired an external consultant to help us create a plan to make pedestrian improvements on the City’s streets. [24] In the last three years, 2 pedestrians and 3 cyclists have died on Cambridge streets. [7] After the 2017 Point-in-Time Count estimated there were some 7,500 people experiencing homelessness citywide — of which 2,100 were considered chronically homeless, i.e. “people who have been living on the streets or in shelter for a year or more and have disabilities or health conditions that make it difficult for them to gain and retain housing” — the department’s 68-page October report reiterated a few key goals. [9] Each year, as approximately 22,000 lane-miles of streets are swept, tons of debris are kept from entering the stormwater system and, subsequently, our local waterways. [26] Due to the nature of our equipment, only streets with curbs and gutters are routinely swept. [26]

Complete Streets Evaluation Checklist: In order to advance the city’s “Complete Streets” policy approved in 2011, we are developing a checklist and evaluation process applicable to all roadway improvement projects that will assist in the design and planning of transportation projects for all road users. [24] A Complete Street provides enhanced protection and improved access for road users of all ages and across all transportation types. [24]

We are in the final stages of redesigning a portion of Montgomery Street to more safely and efficiently accommodate all road users. [24] The boundaries of NW 2 are: NW Wilson Street to the north, NW 29th Avenue to the west, NW Northrup Street to the south, and NW 25th Avenue to the east. [25] By narrowing streets, they have reduced speeding, which improves safety for all users, according to NACTO. [7] The many ways Seattle streets and sidewalks are maintained, from sweeping to paving. [27] The plan will identify specific improvements for one corridor in each ward, and offer a method that can be applied to improve other streets beyond the timeline of this study. [24] “We are going in the wrong direction,” said Tom Maguire, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s sustainable streets director, referring to the national trend. [8]

Please keep in mind disabled vehicles should not be parked on City of Richmond streets during street cleaning or vacuum leaf collection. [26] The Department of Public Works Street Cleaning Division cannot authorize parking ticket refunds or towing fee refunds. [26] DPW Street Cleaning posts the no parking signs at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled service. [26] Effective immediately DPW Street Cleaning and Vacuum Leaf Program services do not accept requests to not tow disabled cars. [26]

Waste Not, Want Not : Although the city isn?t likely to meet its goal of zero waste by 2020, San Francisco has dramatically reduced how much it sends to the landfill. [9] With the ultimate goal of eliminating rear blind spots and providing greater visibility of the rear of the sweeper, blind spot monitoring systems help to reduce the risk of injury and equipment or property damage. [10] Blind spot monitoring sensors can be installed on the rear of the sweeper for a more complete safety solution. Active warning systems, such as blind spot monitoring radar provide an active safety solution that compliments passive solutions, such as vision systems. [10] Thank you to the folks at DOT for hosting such creative educational initiatives to promote safety and Vision Zero.” [11] The mission of the St. Louis Park Streets & Traffic Division is to provide a transportation system in the city that is safe and functional for both vehicles and pedestrians. [29] This would allow continued “freight” designation of many of the roads, but restrict the largest of trucks from city streets where they don’t belong like 11th/12th, 7th, Division, etc. [12] Whatever dream the city had for Division has failed unless it was to have a street meant to be a “block party” the majority of the day. [12]

This division is responsible for all maintenance associated with 377 lane miles of streets, 116 miles of sidewalks, 21 miles of alleys and 10 municipal parking lots. [29] Instead of parking cars on Division Street, people may need to park cars on side streets or private property. [12] People may need to use a different driveway when driving to or from a location directly on Division Street. [12] People who live in East Portland (& Gresham) really have no choice but to use major arterial roads for even local trips, as the residential streets generally don’t connect. [12]

Given the lack of other parallel options for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit, outer Division must operate as a street; it’s far too urban and densely populated to be a road. [12] Inner Division has parallel streets for cars if traffic gets too bad, while outer Division only has outer Powell running parallel to it, an even more congested federal highway (US 26). [12] This division is responsible for all maintenance associated with 1600 street lights, 7576 street signs and 29 traffic signal systems. [29] This street network design was “best practices” in urban design from the 50s & 60s basically all traffic is forced onto major streets, keeping residential areas calm and quiet, with usually a school and/or park in the center of each superblock. [12] Which one(s) are they referring to, and who put them together and funded them? Sounds like that argument over road diets they?re having in Long Beach, CA. Long Beach put one on a major street, and there was such an outcry over it that the road diet was removed on the argument that road diets created traffic jams that people (supposedly) didn?t want. [12] The vast majority of 311 submissions make their way to the Streets Department, the agency in charge of issues like right-of-way obstructions, pothole repairs, and traffic signal emergencies. [30] The Streets Department will then tag the bike, giving the “owner” 10 days to remove it. [30] One of the lesser known, 311-reportable, issues handled by the Streets Department is the presence of an abandoned bike. [30]

The ride was organized by Women Bike, a program of The Street Trust an Oregon transit, walking, and bicycling non-profit based in Portland. [13]

Namely, how truck operators can still service businesses without a center turn lane to stop in, and with a curbside lane that will be reserved for bicycling and separated from other lanes with vertical plastic wands (side streets aren’t big enough for large trucks, and residents don’t want them there even if they did). [12] I think bigger industrial consumers of freight have on-site parking / loading facilities for larger trucks to make deliveries off the street. [12] Safety improvements may require removing parking on both sides of the street. [12] “It is truly important to highlight street safety, and it is truly inspiring that our students are leading the way when it comes to being advocates for safety. [11]

PBOT’s initial plan was to use the space currently used to park cars on the street. [12] We need more barriers and boulders in and along streets to keep these driverless cars in check. [12] I expect most of the delivery trucks that feel like they need to park out in the street are food service and beverage delivery trucks. [12]

You have people going anywhere from 30 to 40 miles an hour, racing down the street and it’s a steady stream,” said North Villard Avenue resident Dennis Chenier. [32] He adds that drivers often use the street as a shortcut to bypass North Greely Avenue. [32] He says drivers who use this street are upset with the new 20-miles-per-hour speed limit. [32] PORTLAND, Ore. – Just two weeks after a new 20 mph speed limit went into effect on Portland’s residential streets, one neighborhood was some backlash against the “20 is Plenty” campaign. [32]

It’s worth noting that PBOT has been up front from Day One about how this project would impact the street. [12] Even though each orange sign along Villard Street from Rosa Parks Way to Ainsworth was spray painted, neighbors decided they wouldn?t let the vandals win. [32] Portland launched the campaign to keep drivers from going over 20 miles per hour in residential streets. [32] There is a ton of off street parking and space in the images shown. [12] I agree, stroads are bad and shouldn’t have ever been built (we have way too many here in Greensboro), but the video falls short on explaining how to covert a stroad into a street, as opposed to a road. [12] I nearly didn’t make it to the ride; as I rode to the meeting point, a squirrel darted across the street in front of me and smashed into the side of a car coming from the other direction. [13] Actually, I would be happy if the Street Trust ever brought this into the realm of public discussion. [12] WPIX 11’s Greg Mocker makes a cameo and interviews the students on the street who are calling on the community to be safe when driving. [11] Community sidewalks are located on streets that are directly adjacent to community or area destinations, such as the library, schools, retail areas, parks, regional trails, transit nodes and places of worship. [29]

“City services” refers to garbage collection, yard waste collection, recycling collection, seasonal leaf collections and monthly street sweeping. [33] The city estimates that expanding street sweeping would cost $6 million. [31]

Street cleaning was the term formerly used to reflect the services the city provides. [33]

The report also says that it’s considering the return of street sweeping as another long-term goal. [31]

The Zero Waste and Litter Action Plan launched today, breaking down how exactly the city plans to fully eliminate the use of landfills and conventional incinerators by 2035. [31] To fix this, the Zero Waste program plans to implement a Building Waste Audit Program, starting with municipal buildings, to ensure that city and commercial buildings are in compliance with the executive order and code. [31]
